When Simon was almost a year old Claira got very sick, with a virus that had been contracted when a traveler came to her work. Soon after, she passed, leaving Merrick to care for the boy. Simon and his father were close, but he clung to his aunt Yas whenever she came home for shore leave. She became like his mother, and he always missed her dearly when she was gone. Simon's paternal grandmother is a dangerous woman (psionic), as a result he has never met her in person. Merrick wouldn't tell Simon why, but there were whispers of her mind control and the harm she had caused to others. Simon has a secret, Isabel (his grandmother) has spoken to him before, in his mind, but he never told anyone. She can feel his power, but Simon, even as young as he is, knows its wrong and fights to stay in his normal life.
