Kalos Arawn was one of many Federation citizens who were captured by Klingon forces, and though interrogated, he did not break. Using Betazoid mental exercises Kalos kept himself strong. Imprisoned, he was almost forgotten about. Surviving the Klingon prison was tough, and it was only through meditation that he was able to keep from despair. It was only inevitable that something would break. Always a strong telepath, Kalos developed his skill further while in prison. Listening to the thoughts of others kept him from dwelling on thoughts of his own. Listening to the thoughts of his captors helped him form a plan of escape.
It is documented, but very rare, for Betazoid telepathy to take on a dark and powerful aspect. Going back to around the 20th Century, then three centuries later with the birth of Hent Tevren, there have been select individuals and groups that discovered or developed a technique to use telepathy to kill. By flooding the minds of others with intense and terrifying images, they are were almost literally scared to death. Kalos, being a student of Betazoid history, read about such people but records of the exact method was either lost or highly classified. Given the situation and conditions in the Klingon prison, Kalos was motivated to find such a method himself.
The prison break left every single Klingon he encountered dead. A few of the Starfleet prisoners were also freed from the wing in which he was held, and between them they got away and off the planet. How the guards were killed was undisclosed publically, the surviving prisoners refusing even to speak of what happened, but they all feared Kalos Arawn. There was a darkness they could see in him that was darker than the black of his eyes.
