The Pangarans are a humanoid species from the planet Pangar. They were encountered by the USS Philadelphia, FF-6053 around Stardate 20508. Because of their caste system, they are not a member of the Federation, but they are allied with the UFP for trade and other purposes.

Physiology

Pangarans have mane-like hair that flows across the top of their heads and down their backs, ending in a tail. The hair colors include black, brown, blond, and white. Their skin has zebra-like stripes in black-to-brown, and white-to-cream.

Caste System

The Pangar society works on a caste system. The classes are as follows, in order from high class to low class: rulers, administrators, workers, "dral" (translates as "unwanted").

Customs

The Pangarans are a superstitious people. For example, the number 5 is a good number, morning rain is a bad sign, and a black bird is a bad omen. They consider the 5-sides star a sacred symbol.

There are many specific customs in Pangaran society, including:

• The Right of Kinship: The family of a victim(s) has the right to decide the fate of the criminal(s).
• Sha'kri: A 'declaration to mate'. If, for example, a Pangaran male chooses a mate, he can defend his honor in the Sha'nyran (combat ritual) against an opposing male. The female may accept the Asryn'akara, the offer of a protector who will defend her honor if their is no opposing male. The choosing is nullified and no challenge is necessary if the chosen is already married.

Clothing

The Pangar wear tunics in assorted colors, but always with black or gold trim, and often with decorative bead work or sequins. The back of the tunics are slightly open with narrow strips across the mane. This would be rather risqué on humans. The tunics are accessorized with beaded belts (though the beads are often precious gems).

Architecture

The Pangar homeworld has large cities that are built as huge 5-sided step pyramids. These five steps are levels to the city, with the highest central area as the seat of the government (rulers). Industry is in the outermost step and agriculture is outside the city. Ramps/roads link the different levels. Smaller cities and towns are still arranged in 5-sided layouts, but are kept flat.
