Personal History

Jorant Reb was a veteran enlisted Starfleet engineer. He served in Starfleet briefly until invalided out and back to civilian life. With a bio-synthetic leg and nowhere to go. He found he had inherited his father’s old freighter and decided to set up in business hauling freight himself. At first business was easy to come by; so many worlds needing supplies to rebuild after the wars, a decent living could be made out of the ashes for a man who worked hard. Jorant met Serra while delivering cargo back to the Trill homeworld and they soon married. Their first child was a boy; Jarran, and by the time their daughter Serran came along six years later they were well adjusted to family and business life intermixed as they made the cargo runs between the various systems of the Alpha and Beta Quadrant borders. Growing up on an interstellar freighter was not bad, but then the children didn’t know anything different. Even when they were small they were poles apart, Jarran the serious one, dark and moody, Serran always full of laughter and play. She could find fun on board the ship in the most unlikely places. (Reduced-g baseball was one of her favourite games she would play with her best friend Tara).

As the years went by relations between the major galactic powers became fractious once again and business for a freight captain became more dangerous by the day. This in turn became reflected in family life. Jarran and Serran were teenagers and very much poles apart when it came to opinion about life on board the freighter. Jorant and Serra wanted both children to take on roles within the business. Jarran wanted this too, dreaming of expanding and buying a fleet of ships pedalling cargo about the sector. Serran however was just not interested. She saw the stars through the viewport and knew there was more than just the trade routes to be travelled; if only her father would just set course to that unknown system or planet, or linger longer past that nebula.. there was so much more that she wanted to see and do than spend her life running cargo from A to B on a smelly old freighter ship.

Her destiny was to change in a completely unexpected way however.

Jorant Reb rarely took passengers as cargo, but this time he made an exception. The passengers paid well, and were some important ambassador or some such. He didn’t really care when the pay was that good. During the otherwise quiet journey the ship was attacked by three Klingon Birds of Prey. With only minimal firepower and an old veteran’s piloting skill, Jorant managed to get them away from the Klingon ships. Unfortunately, not all of the crew and passengers survived the attack. He was relieved to see that the ambassador was unharmed when he checked on their quarters, but sorry to see the ambassador’s companion had been killed. Damage to their quarters meant Jorant offered to move the ambassador somewhere new. It was on the way there, crossing another damaged part of the ship that a gantry gave way and the ambassador fell. Landing badly with twisted metal puncturing vital organs he was doomed. Save the symbiont, he begged. Jorant knew the importance, being Trill himself of course, but how could it be done? The freighter had only minimal medical facilities and their doctor held out no hope of even finding a suitable new host. He did run tests on every Trill on board however, and found there was just one person capable of receiving the symbiont. And so it was that Serran became Serran Zan, sixth host to the symbiont.

Ambassador Kirran Zan had been a respected representative of the Trill government for several years, and being the fifth host to Zan he carried with him the memories and experiences of their previous lives together. Now he passed those along with his own memories and experiences into young Serran. At 22 years old Serran suddenly found her life so very different from how she, or her family, expected it to go along. Now she had more thoughts, more ideas, more options. She wanted to travel, to leave and join Starfleet.

Jorant and Serra forebade their daughter leaving, but ultimately could not stop her. She applied to Starfleet Academy and was accepted. Her friend Tara, although a few years younger than Serran, had already left and was on Earth undergoing her training. Serran was delighted to be reunited with her friend as she arrived on Earth, moving into a house with Tara, and spending the longest time in her life on solid ground. For several months she found she missed space, and the adjustment to becoming Joined caught up with her too, but she was determined to do well in her studies. With Tara’s help she got through her first year at the Academy then hit the ground on year two running.

Serran always kept in touch with her family, still out there on the freighter, and hoped that one day her parents would understand that she had her own life to lead, that one day they would forgive her and accept her for what she wanted to be; out there exploring the stars.

USS Ticonderoga, CA-1471

Upon Graduation from Star Fleet Academy, Serran was assigned to the USS Ticonderoga, where she served as Helm Officer. She enjoyed piloting such a large starship, but quietly felt that the fun in piloting came from the small ships, the fast and maneuverable ones. Still, she found herself quite adept at not only piloting but in space combat tactics.

Ironically Serran was on Shore Leave during the fateful last flight of the Ticonderoga. Having disembarked at starbase for Leave, she took a shuttle out to meet with the flagship of her family's freighter fleet. She was catching up on family news when she got word that the Tico needed her crew immediately for an urgent mission. She was just too far away to get back in time.

USS Pegasus, CL-2500

With the USS Ticonderoga destroyed, Zan found herself without a starship to pilot... with so much competition in the Tactical department she decided to cast her net wider. It was that or give in to the pressure to rejoin the family business and pilot freighter ships for the rest of her life. The prospect of that was just too much to bear. As she'd taken a Minor in Starship Security while at Star Fleet Academy she added that to the options in her applications for a post. Star Fleet were certainly recruiting more Security officers in the wake of the recent conflict, and with her being 'halfway there' they would be able to fast track her through the training rather than starting someone off fresh. So Serran returned to the Academy to complete training to full Security Officer level. Putting in applications for starships she found that a position was possible on the USS Pegasus, which featured other members of the Tico crew also, but unfortunately she would have to take a demotion from Lieutenant Junior Grade back to Midshipman. As there were no fancy starships begging for her piloting skills Serran decided to make the move and take demotion. She would still be able to fly for fun as a past time, on the holodeck perhaps...

Gaining an assignment to the USS Pegasus, Serran found her feet in her new career as a Security Officer. Their mission seemed pretty routine; to escort a diplomat to a negotiation. A common enough task. This mission led the Pegasus close to the Neutral Zone, and when a strange signal was picked up, the ship was drawn into the Zone to investigate. They found an old Star Fleet vessel trapped in the grip of a subspace anomaly. Going to the rescue of a fellow Star Fleet ship was infinitely more exciting than the escort duties bodyguarding a Vulcan diplomat might be. The subspace rift began to make its presence felt among the crew, affecting the telepathic crew members with headaches first. As the ship drew closer to the rift and to the USS Gryphon the effect widened. An Away Team was put together to beam onto the Gryphon, and Zan was thrilled to be part of that team. The Gryphon was an Ambassador Class starship, some 50 years out of date and unheard of in those 50 years. The Away Team didn't know what to expect when they arrived on the relic. Zan revelled in the nostalgia of setting foot on a class of starship remembered from when Rikka was the host of Zan, and piloted shuttles on and off those ships. Familiarity was a big help, Serran found, as she led the way around the empty decks.

The team split into two, and Serran accompanied the group up onto the Bridge. Everyone experienced visions, for want of a better word, or perhaps... ghosts... of the old crew. Were they dead? Alive? One encounter on the Bridge had Zan feeling that they were very much alive but trapped in time by some effect of the rift. Attempts to free the Gryphon from the rift proved fruitless unfortunately, as the rift ramped up the psychological trauma experienced by the Away Team and crew on the Pegasus. Zan managed to get herself and an engineer down to the auxillary shuttle bay and start up one of the old shuttles. Rikka Zan's memories were what got her and that shuttle out of the bay and the Away Team back to the Pegasus. Headaches and visions plagued her and the rest of the team, visions of people she knew, her parents, slipping away from her... Back on the ship, the First Officer, Commander Gregg, felt the only solution was to send the Gryphon all the way into the rift and seal the whole thing up. This done, the Pegasus could finally continue her mission. Everything went smoothly with that thankfully, but Serran kept on feeling that she was seeing images from her past, echoes of the nightmare on the USS Gryphon.

USS Dauntless, CA-1553

After just one mission on the USS Pegasus, Serran was transferred once again. She found herself assigned, along with many other of her Pegasus crewmates, to the USS Dauntless. She felt thrilled to be heading to such an illustrious ship and hoped to learn more about her chosen career in a larger Security department. As the ship set out for a routine patrol, Serran was promoted back up to the rank of Ensign, and began a new set of duties among a new crew once again. Maybe this time she would stick around long enough to get to know some of her crewmates better? Some had been on the same ships as her going back to the Tico, but she didn't know anyone outside of duty shifts. It just proved to her that one could be among a crowd, but still be alone. Serran needed to learn to open up a little, make new friends.

The assignment to the USS Dauntless was an eventful one, especially considering it was supposedly just to chart an area. Encountering time-travelling Iotians, a singularity, travelling back in time themselves, forward again to discover that the timeline had been changed, so back into the past to put things right... and a few Ferengi and an unidentified warship from the future... Eventful to say the least. During the mission Serran was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade, and head of the Security department. It was a tough mission, but she kept her head together and kept to her principles of duty and loyalty to her crew and to Starfleet. By their return to civilisation she was starting to get used to the new responsibilities of her role.

USS Pegasus, CL-2500

Her next assignment saw her returning to the USS Pegasus, and having received the Distinguished Service Globe for her part in the mission with the Dauntless, Zan was also promoted to full Lieutenant, and continued to serve as Chief of Security.

It was a different Serran Zan that rejoined the Pegasus though, one that was more experienced, more mature, more responsible. So she had grown and evloved, but still hadn't found much common ground among her crewmates. Opening up and making friends were still challenges to be faced. Maybe she would succeed during her second tour on the Pegasus.

The new assignment would challenge her in many ways, especially as it would take the Pegasus right to the furthest reaches of the Gamma Quadrant...

The mission to the Gamma Quadrant was a strange one, to be sure. Travelling through a Transwarp Gate, the ship escorted a flotilla of civillian engineering vessels assigned to build another gate at the other end. While they worked on that task, the Pegasus responded to a signal coming from a nearby system. Responding to a distress signal from a nearby system, they encountered an unidentified probe. Being unable to get more science personnel from the Alpha Quadrant, Captain Grant decided to reassign his staff to cover the roles required on this mission. This meant that First Officer, Commander Gregg, being the most experienced scientist on the ship, was reassigned to Chief Science Officer for the duration of the mission. To Serran's shock, Grant then assigned her to step in as First Officer. Having only recently completing her command training before this mission, Serran was familiar with what was required of her, but unsure whether she could handle it yet.

An Away Mission to investigate a long abandoned Dominion science facility led to their presence unwittingly activating a device that duplicated the crew of the Pegasus, using partly formed humanoid creatures created in the facility laboratories. That meant that everyone was cloned, including Serran. Returning to the ship, she found her clone in Sickbay. The woman she met there was missing the Zan symbiont, and so was an exact copy of how Serran had been before the encounter with the Trill ambassador on her parent's freighter. More problems appeared as the ship's environmental systems struggled to cope with the doubled number of people on board. Fights began to break out between crew and their clone counterparts, nobody really sure who the original and who the copy was. Some chose the time to settle old scores. DNA samples were used to identify people apart, then 'Serran Gamma', along with the clone of Shione Kurasa, Kaleesh Tarel, and other members of the crew, offered to be put into stasis and lighten the load on the ship. It would also offer them the chance to survive, given that the Dominion technology was flawed, and that clones did not live very long. The Dominion facility was destroyed and the Pegasus rejoined the flotilla of engineers. Their work done, the transwarp gate needed testing, and so the Pegasus returned to the Alpha Quadrant.

With the mission over, many of the crew were reassigned. Serran was surprised again when Star Fleet awarded her the Distinguished Service Globe for her achievements in the face of danger, keeping her Commanding Officer alive and getting the ship and crew back home during the Gamma Quadrant mission. The medal was only part of the reward that Star Fleet had for the Trill, promoting her to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and sending her on a three month advanced command training course at Starfleet Command. Staying on Starbase Alpha and talking with her 'mentor', Kinziri Jal, she was encouraged to visit to the Trill homeworld to spend time in the caves of Mak'ala. Her encounter with her unjoined clone had troubled her deeply. It made her realise that she had not properly integrated with each of her symbiont's previous hosts memories. Not that unusual given that she was not given the years of preparation and training from a young age that readied most Trill who were on the Symbiosis program. Back at Starbase Alpha, the medical teams there worked to stabilize the clones. Zan visited 'Serran Gamma' regularly, making a connection with the woman that reminded her so much of how she had been before Joining with Zan.

With a new sense of who she was as an integrated Joined being, but with this clone reflecting who she was in the past, Serran became determined to find just who she could be. Putting everything into her training, she achieved high scores in Advanced Command. What she wanted more than anything now was to see how far she could go, to lead a team, to command a starship, to be the best that she could be. Star Fleet Command were impressed by her spirit and determination, as well as her high scores in the training. A new mission came up, and a command position available, and Command knew just the person for the job.

Travelling to Starbase Bravo, Serran was given orders, and given Command of the USS Sheridan, the temporary rank of full Commander along with the job. Should the mission be successful, she might keep her rank and her command. Did she have what it takes? Time would tell.

USS Sheridan, DD-4086

The Sheridan was tasked with travelling to the Gamma Quadrant through the Transwarp Gate, there they were to search for a team of missing Vulcan scientists. Some of the scientists were found floating in space among debris. Intel given by a race of nomadic traders led the Sheridan to where some Romulans had put the scientist captives to work down a dilithium mine. Serran sent her First Officer, Commander Boislevesque, to take a team to the surface, while she set the Sheridan against the enemy ships. Evidently the Romulans had found old Dominion vessels and were experimenting with telepresence control of them. The Sheridan was forced into the planet's atmosphere to evade a larger force of Jem'hadar fighters, with Serran herself at the helm, and was forced to make a controled landing on the planet. Unfortunately enemy fire from orbit forced the Sheridan to slide down a mountainside, when the ship came to a stop Serran was among those injured. Trapped under a broken bulkhead, she received massive trauma to her lower right leg, resulting in amputation and replacement with a bio-synthetic replacement.

Thankfully Commander Boislevesque and the Away Team were able to rescue the surviving scientists, and the mission was mostly a success.

Post mission, Serran underwent physiotherapy to adapt to life with the new leg, finding it tough. She had always been a very active person, enjoying many sports and martial arts, visiting the gymnasium daily. Adapting was difficult, but with some determination she pulled through it.

Once physically fit again, Starlfeet Command had a new assignment for her...

USS Magellan, FSC-28019

Receiving orders to command the newly minted USS Magellan, a Yeager Class Scout ship, Serran ran the ship through it's paces on a cadet/shakedown cruise with crew made up of 'Red Squad' cadets from Starfleet Academy. The ship performed excellently, and she was given the task of taking her out to Pioneer Outpost where she would be assigned a new crew and report for new orders from Rear Admiral Jal, the Field Commander of the Expeditionary Group based at the new Starfleet outpost.

An emergency call up to duty had the Magellan half-crewed but joining an armada drawn together to face the threat of a Borg 'Megasphere'. The Scout ship played an important role getting up close to the enemy and Zan took bold decisions to get in, drop off teams assigned to gather information and to sabotage the huge structure's shields, pick the team's survivors up, and get the Magellan out as the Starfleet armada pounded the Borg vessel. Unfortunately the enemy opened up a transwarp portal and vanished before it could be destroyed. Serran was proud of her crew that day, and of the role they had played.

Her actions earned her Cross of Gallantry medal and a new starship.

USS Callisto, RSV-88001

A newly launched Luna Class starship, equipped with the new Quantum Slipstream drive, was attached to Pioneer Project to travel to the Delta Quadrant and search for the origins of the Borg and their Megasphere, with the added goal of finding the old lost starship USS Voyager. Unfortunately the slipstream drive failed and the ship dropped to normal space too soon. Damage to the ship superstructure caused buckling to the bulkhead above the Bridge, which collapsed and crushed Zan beneath. She suffered a severe head injury and remained in a coma while medical staff tried to treat her.

Unable to be treated completely while out in the Delta Quadrant, Serran was transported back to Starfleet Medical and spent many months under medical care. The damage to her brain completely healed, but upon regaining consciousness it was clear that she had lost a lot of her memories. Complicating matters, the symbiont Zan pushed forward other host memories in place of those of the Serran host. Effectively she didn't know who she was, which of the hosts were her own personality and which memories belonged to her.

Taken back to the Trill homeworld, she then entered the care of the Trill Symbiosis Commission. The experts there tried to heal the link between Serran and Zan, and the hosts that preceded her Joining. In the year that followed she lived in the family home of Rear Admiral Kinziri Jal, and helped staff work the orchards. Memories from previous host Tallen, who lived as a farmer on Trill during the Dominion War, gave Serran purpose while she and her doctors came up with a solution to her situation. To begin with, medical doctors expected the retrograde amnesia to heal itself within six to nine months. When that didn't happen Serran began to think hard about what she was to do with her life. Guardians of the Symbiont Pools taught her to connect with her past hosts and their memories and experiences, but still her own memories of the last decade of her life were just not there.

One thing that did come back to her through procedural, 'muscle' memory, was her intuitive ability and love for flying, for piloting shuttles like past host Rikka, but also starships like the Ticonderoga as Serran. With her memories of being Captain Zan of the Callisto seemingly gone forever, she made up her mind to at least be Serran Zan the pilot and not to waste any more of her life waiting around for some magical fix to restore her mind.

Returning to Starfleet she re-qualified as a pilot and refreshed her knowledge and procedures of the Tactical department, then took up a position at Starfleet Academy as an Instructor. She adapted to this Earth-bound lifestyle, getting her fix of space travel through instructing cadets to be the next generation of pilots.

Symbiont History

Kirran Zan

Federation Ambassador. He spent his entire life in the Diplomatic Corps. Married with one son. Age at Joining 22, age at death 46.

Rikka Zan

Shuttle pilot serving in Starfleet. She was unmarried, age 21 at Joining, 32 upon death. She died when the cargo shuttle she was piloting was targeted by Orion Syndicate. They left her for dead and stole the cargo.

Tallen Zan

Tallen never actually left the Trill homeworld in his entire life. He was a farmer and content with remaining on his homeworld growing good real food to feed those without fancy food replicators etcetera. He had a loving wife and five children, two girls and three boys, who were around his bed when he died, age 86. (Joined age 22)

Girran Zan

A trader, Girran gave Zan it’s first experience of interstellar travel. He built up a successful business trading with neighbouring systems, until a spaceborne virus took hold and forced him to return to Trill. His eldest son took over the business when Girran’s health began to fail, and the family name still runs the business to this day. Girran was 24 when he was Joined, and 52 when he died.

Seletha Zan

First Host to Zan, Seletha. Joined age 22, died age 68. Seletha was involved with Trill politics. Groomed for Joining from an early age she was ambitious and charismatic. She could have held First Office if her career had not been cut short by scandal. She became a writer and died alone in her house beside the sea.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Growing up knowing that she could not live the life that her parents wanted her to was difficult, painful at times. She knew that she could not stay on board the freighter all of her life, had to get off ship and go her own way, any way. Everything she did seemed to be wrong, her parents criticised her every move it seemed, and she could never please them. She was just not the daughter that they wanted her to be, loyal to the family tradition and business. However much she knew she had to go however, leaving the ship to join Starfleet was the most painful experience, more than any physical injury, heart breaking.
Best Time: Being accepted into Starfleet Academy. Living on Earth, on solid ground for the first time in her life. Getting a ‘sun tan’. Having a chance to drive a replica Terran automobile known as a ‘trans am’ while on vacation from the Academy, such a thrill.
Most Crucial Experience: Becoming Joined to the Zan symbiont. It was unexpected, an accident injured a rare passenger on a freight voyage, the host to Zan died and Serran was the only suitable recipient among the whole crew. The two beings proved a perfect match, both physiologically and psychologically. Serran’s love of an active life combined with Zan’s experience of the stars to create a new whole, a new person with a new passion and desire to travel the galaxy and pilot starships. That accident changed her destiny.
Role Model: Famous Trill in Starfleet, particularly starship captains.
