Personal History

Her earliest memory was shrouded in chaos and panic; an explosion, deep in the tunnels where her family made their home; phaser fire, being aimed both at her people and being returned by those brave warriors who stood shoulder to shoulder with her father and eldest brother. Her mother had cradled the baby Jintana in her arms, one protective forearm attempting to shield her delicate head from the phaser streams whistling past her ears, charging the already tense atmosphere with a scent of electricity, and of death.

Jintana Yuni had only been ten months old in that battle, but even at such a young age she had understood the pain and loss etched on the faces of her family and friends as they spent a quiet night after the storm laying to rest their fallen comrades. She was too young to know the details of the battle, the prize they had been so valiantly fighting for, although later years would teach her that it had been for that most precious and valuable of all possessions – freedom.

Jintana’s childhood was spent almost exclusively in the dark tunnels, deep in the bowels of Rutia IV. Her mother tried to make their subterranean home as comfortable as possible, but their resting places were always transitory, they ready to move on to a new and safer sanctuary at the first sign of an attack. The small community to which she belonged proudly bore the name ‘Ansata’ and the adults diligently educated their children in the history of their fight, the wrongs done to them by the Rutian government and the world they hoped to build one day, out in the open, once their liberation had been won.

At ten years old, Jintana was considered mature enough to join the fight and she was trained in combat techniques and battle tactics. But the young Rutian showed far greater skill in engineering and by the time she was twelve she was constructing advanced and highly powerful weapons for her people to use against their enemies.

Her whole life changed with the event that history would name as ‘The Battle of Esseva Cavern’. Her people had been cornered by a Rutian security force, determined to wipe out the people they referred to as the ‘Ansata plague’ once and for all. Her comrades had fought valiantly, but ultimately had been forced to use the inverters, dangerous mechanisms they had avoided activating since the days of Kyril Finn, to affect their escape. It had a devastating effect on some of her people, those old enough to remember when the inverters had been used more freely found themselves suffering from a terrible affliction. Jintana’s own mother had been merely a child in those days, but the damage to her body was still sufficient to take her life.

Following the events at Esseva Cavern, the remaining Ansata struggled to cope with such a heavy loss to their number. One by one, they began to desert and return to the surface in an attempt to negotiate cessation of hostilities with the Rutian government. Jintana’s father was one of the last of their group to remain underground, determined to continue with the fight that had defined his entire life thus far. This decision would settle his ultimate fate, when a final battle between the remaining Ansata separatists and the Rutian security took both him and his two brave sons. Jintana was the only one left of her blood line, although a few of her extended family still remained with her.

Tired and lost, she eventually made her own way up to the surface, ready to accept whatever punishment might be waiting for her at the hands of her one-time enemy.

---

Life on the surface was unlike anything Jintana had ever known. Her body had developed a natural adaption to her subterranean surroundings and initially the conditions on the surface were painful and frightening to her; the blinding light from the daytime sun hurt her eyes; the cold air stung in her lungs and her throat; the countless open spaces, or chaotic gatherings of hundreds of people left her feeling lost and alone and afraid. More than once she considered retreating back underground, even if she were to find herself the only one still inhabiting the tunnels, but it had become dangerous now to remain in those quarters, with the Ansata all but defeated, regular sweeps by the Rutian security forces were made to round up any lone and straggling defectors.

For their part, the Rutian government attempted to honour this newfound peace with the Ansata the best they could, but the truth was that they were unsure quite what to do with a people they had, only months earlier, considered terrorists and absolute enemies of the state. And the Ansata had been indoctrinated from birth to believe that the Rutian leaders were cold, cruel and wicked. Co-existence was difficult, prejudices almost impossible to let go, and Jintana became a wanderer, lost, like the rest of her people, in this bright, strange world.

---

It was the return of the Federation that saved her. She had heard stories of the men who had visited their planet in 2366, had talked with their then-leader, now-hero, Kyril Finn, and attempted to talk him from his conflict. This wish had now been made fact, many years later and now, some of these men had returned to see this new peace in action. The vessel that brought them here was unlike anything that Jintana had ever seen, and her engineer’s mind was instantly captivated by its design and features. She took every opportunity she could to learn more about the Federation and their starship technology, eventually forging a friendship with their engineer that survives to this day, and would ultimately see her invited to return with the ship to Terran where she was, after a good deal of negotiations, granted a place at Starfleet Academy.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Engineering
Academy Minor(s): Advanced subspace geometry, Temporal mechanics, Application of Creative Design in Holodecks
Hobbies and Pastimes: intana still enjoys the passtimes she cherished as a child; singing, music and storytelling. She is an avid reader and has recently discovered a passion for 19th century Terran literature.
Short-Term Goals: To secure an engineering placement on a starship and to dedicate herself to her duties to the best of her abilities.
Long-Term Goals: To find her place in the universe, where she truly belongs.
Personality: To those she allows to get close to her, Jintana is a warm, caring individual. Raised in a commune-like environment, she was always used to having many people around her and her natural disposition is to seek out the company of others. However, since emerging from the tunnels of Rutia IV, Jintana has become more guarded and nowadays finds it more difficult to be open with others, especially people she does not know very well.

The death of her brother and closest friend, Tomoren, impacted her greatly and she has been cautious not to allow herself to grow too close to another, as the fleeting nature of life weighs constantly on her mind.

But despite all of this, deep down she still has a tremendous capacity to be a true, loyal and loving friend to anyone willing to take the time to gain her trust.
Sense of Humor: The hardships of a subterranean life on the run engendered a somewhat dark and dry sense of humour in many of the Ansata and none more than Tomoren Yuni. This quality is greatly reflected in Jintana, who has often found her rather black humour at odds with her fellow cadets.
Phobias: As might be expected of someone who spent the greatest part of their lives deep underground, Jintana has a dislike for large and crowded environments. She often suffers symptoms resembling panic when in busy public places.

Her treatment at the hands of the Rutian government has also left her with a mild anxiety connected with figures of authority, something that she initially struggled with a great deal upon entering Starfleet Academy. Over the years she has fought hard to suppress these feelings, but occasionally, and especially in situations where she might feel threatened, she can sometimes find herself at odds with her commanding officers.
Likes: During her childhood in the tunnels, pleasures were simple and the young Jintana’s favourite passtimes were creating stories to entertain the other children, or singing traditional and improvised songs, accompanied by her brother, Tomoren, on the Rutian harp.
Dislikes: To some outsiders, the reputation of the Ansata as mere terrorists has meant that over the years Jintana has faced a good deal of prejudice from those who did not understand the Ansata’s beliefs and value systems. For a short while she took to fabricating an alternative, and mostly fictitious, personal history, even though, deep inside she still carries an immense amount of pride for the achievements they made in attempting to win their freedom. Because of this, Jintana now despises prejudice in all forms, and especially xenophobia.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: There are not many superficial things that ruffle the usually calm surface of this Rutian woman, but she does find her mood to be somewhat reflective of atmospheric conditions, and warm, sunny environments usually leave her a little uncomfortable and even bad tempered.
Achievements: Jintana’s proudest achievement will always be her actions in battle alongside her fellow Ansata warriors. However, she has also fought long and hard, and has done so almost completely alone, to forge a career within Starfleet and so her achievements as a top class graduate of Starfleet Academy, where her final year thesis posited new theories for the construction and use of Temporal transporters, also give her a great deal of pride and satisfaction.
Disappointments: Even with her incredibly sharp and technical mind, and her extensive knowledge of engineering and technology, Jintana failed to make the Ansata’s inverter technology less devastating to her own people. This failure ultimately resulted in the death of her own mother, something that, even though Jintana was only fourteen years of age at the time, she has never forgiven herself for.
Illnesses: Jintana’s health is, on the whole, very good, although the major sunlight deprivation in her formative years has left her with mild Osteogenesis imperfecta, and although current medical advancements have seen most of the side effects of this condition neutralised, she is still slightly more susceptible to serious bone injury from accidents than others of her age might be.
Strengths: Jintana has experienced a great deal of pain and hardship in her life and her childhood was incredibly challenging, although this is a realisation that has only been reached with hindsight. Because of this, it takes a rather extreme set of conditions to unnerve Jintana, and her strength and courage in adverse situations is something that was greatly admired by her fellow cadets at the Academy.
Weaknesses: For someone who was raised in such an open and social environment, Jintana has, in more recent years, developed a tendency to prefer the safety of her own company to that of others. This quality caused some cadets at the Academy to view her as cold and unfriendly.
Fears: Watching her mother succumb to such a devastating condition has developed a fear of illness and disease in Jintana. She is fully aware of the great advancements made by the Federation in medicine, but is also aware, possibly more acutely than some, of the limitations that still exist in this area, especially when new and misunderstood afflictions are presented
Prejudices: Although she would like to consider herself free of personal prejudice and strives every day to achieve this, Jintana knows that she will never completely let go of her negative feelings towards the Rutian government for their treatment of her people and when faced with cultural situations that resemble her own background, she is unable to avoid a natural inclination to side with those fighting for freedom, no matter what the underlying circumstances are.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Functional - utility trousers and t-shirts.
Distinguishing Features: Having spent her formative years living underground, Jintana's physical appearance is consistent with one who has been deprived of sunlight for a lengthy period of time. She is small in stature, with pale skin and bright, almost piercing, eyes. Her red hair is typical of Rutian females, although the recent years spent above ground have lightened it a little.
Pets: Ayo the lizard was discovered by Jintana when she was a small child, making a home in the tunnels of Rutia IV. She rescued the lizard from almost certain death in the jaws of a feral cat and kept him with her from then on. He was to become her most trusted confidant, although his counsel was usually silent.
Friends: Jintana had many friends amongst her fellow Ansata, their harsh existence in the tunnels forging strong and lasting friendships between all the members. But still, her best friends would always be her big brother, Tomoren, and her beloved pet Ayo.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Having lost her entire family in the tunnels of Rutia IV, to either battle or disease, it is almost impossible for Jintana to identify one particular moment that has caused her the most pain, but the death of her brother, Tomoren, who from the moment she was born had been her constant companion and protector, remains the greatest loss she has ever had to cope with and is the one thing she knows she will never truly recover from.

Tomoren Yuni was only seventeen years old when, in a brief firefight between the Ansata and the Rutian security forces, the young warrior was hit full-force in the chest by a phaser blast and died almost instantly. He had thrown himself into the path of the weapon in an attempt to shield his father, who did survive and had to suffer the pain of outliving his youngest son, even if it was only for a matter of weeks.
Best Time: Despite all of the hardships endured by the Ansata, Jintana’s childhood was, on the whole, a happy one. As her mother was fond of saying, they did not have much, but what they did have they appreciated absolutely.

On peaceful evenings, Jintana’s happiest memories were of sitting round a small fire with her family, her brother, Tomoren, playing the Rutian harp while she sang in a nightingale’s voice to entertain the others. Then her father would settle them all down to sleep and tell them one of his countless tales of how life would be for them once they had won their freedom, how they would walk out in the open, amongst the rest of the Rutian people, and maybe would even become rulers themselves one day. Her father was always happiest when occupied with this subject and the look of contentment on his face is how she now chooses to remember him.
Most Crucial Experience: Although Jintana’s emergence from the tunnels of Rutia IV to attempt a life amongst the rest of the Rutian people was borne out of tragedy and complete loss, ultimately it was this event that led her down the path she still treads to this day. Her decision to join Starfleet Academy was crystallised by a need to make something of herself, to do something meaningful with her life to honour her family and comrades taken in the fight. It is what she strives for still, more than anything, every day.
Role Model: Jintana’s brother, Tomoren, will always be the person she looks up to more than any other.
