Personal History

Firstborn son of a very successful theatre actor and his wife, a wonderful dancer, Marcus led a childhood characterized by dinner parties, trips to the opera and the domestic bliss only possible by having two parents who truly and deeply love each other. While growing up, Marcus distinguished himself with his intelligence, quick wit and driven work ethic. After graduating from secondary school he attended Oxford and received a degree in English Literature. Soon after graduating he was spending his mornings trying to start a writing career, and his evenings enjoying London's theatre, music and nightlife. While enjoying fine drinks and fine company at a small pub with an open mic, one voice managed to make an impact amongst the otherwise atrocious amateurs. A young woman with a voice that seemed to reach through his chest and touch his heart caught his rapt and undivided attention. After she finished, Marcus spent a considerable amount of time building up courage and a high enough blood alcohol level to approach her. She found him charming and a fiery romance quickly blossomed between the two of them.

Emily and Marcus married a year later, and six months after that, Marcus published his first novel, Illusions of Grandeur to much critical acclaim. Marcus seemed to be fulfilling all of his dreams. However, a single out of sync power coupler changed all of those dreams. Causing a chain reaction that ripped the shuttle apart just moments after liftoff, seven young musicians on their way to Sydney were killed instantly, including Emily.

After Emily's death, Marcus spiraled into a pit of depression. His life became a labyrinth of suffering where every experience had the opportunity to ignite the loss he had felt. Worst of all, he was unable to draw inspiration from his suffering, but instead, every time he tried to sit down and write, his mind was clouded with images, thoughts and feelings that would not coalesce into words. His family urged him to be patient, assured him that time would make soothe his soul. However, Marcus realized that the suffering he was experiencing was a form of the human experience that he had spent so much time reading and writing about, and that merely waiting for it to pass would be no better than ignoring life itself. So he committed himself to facing life face to face.

Marcus debated for several weeks on how best to face life; he contemplated, he sought advice, but mostly he read. And he saw examples of men and women who gripped life by the horns and truly lived: Ishmael, Huck Finn, Robinson Cruesoe, etc. These were men with little in common but what they experienced: adventure. And so Marcus determined to experience his own adventure, and in the 24th century there was nowhere better to find adventure than Starfleet.

And so at the age of 24, when most cadets were already graduating or moving on to advanced training, Marcus was sitting for the entrance exams. After much study, he excelled, finding a particular enjoyment in the study of Physiology and sensing that his artist's heart lended itself better to healing than phasering, he decided to pursue a medical degree.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Medicine, with a specialty in trauma and acute care surgery.
Academy Minor(s): Xenoliterature; psychology
Hobbies and Pastimes: Reading, writing, music or more physical activities like skiing or racquetball.
Short-Term Goals: To discover whether the human existence is merely suffering.
Long-Term Goals: To begin writing again.
Personality: Marcus is generally reserved. When he does speak he vacillates between straightforward brusqueness or analytical introspection (often in the form of a quotation).
Sense of Humor: Dry and witty
Phobias: None
Likes: Intriguing conversation over tea or whiskey.
Dislikes: People who are quick to act aggressively or overbearing to get what they want.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: When people dismiss literature or the arts purely in favour of science.
Achievements: His first book, Illusions of Grandeur was received with much acclaim and received several awards.
Disappointments: Marcus' greatest disappointment are all of the little moments with Emily that he let go in favour of something that had seemed more important at the time, but he has since forgotten.
Illnesses: None
Strengths: Marcus has a strong imagination paired with a highly analytical mind. This has favoured him with the ability to excel in nearly every category he has applied himself.
Weaknesses: Marcus is perhaps tuned into the concept of the human experience. This, combined with the loss of his wife can lead to deep bouts of depression. That depression, matched with love for whiskey, can occasionally (but not often) lead into self destructive episodes.
Fears: That he will never be able to write again.
Prejudices: None
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Comfortable. Jeans and a sweater or whatever seems appropriate.
Distinguishing Features: None
Pets: None
Friends: His sister Liz

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: The death of his wife.
Best Time: Finally watching his book get published.
Role Model: Too many to list. Although he does have a special place in his heart for Oscar Wilde, due to the shared name. Since starting his new career in medicine he has found many new heroes, most particularly Leonard McCoy.
