Personal History

Early Life

Don West was found on the first of March, on the doorstep of the Shinning temple, a Buddhist monastery in North Deqen. The elders of the temple had no idea who he was or where he had come from and so that became is birth date. Looking more Western than Asian they named him West. D.N.A tests revealed that he was half Human and half Bajoran.

He grew up in the temple and learnt the Buddhist ways, but he found it very difficult to fit in. Not only was he half human, but his human traits let him stand out even more. He was a fair headed Caucasian between all the dark haired Asian children. West became a loner, concentrating on the Long Fist fighting style the monks had taught him. He would also meditate while the other children would be out playing and socializing. Over the years he became a good listener, because he had no friends and would always be on the outskirts of conversations which were taking place. By the age of thirteen West could identify a person walking down the halls by the sound of their footsteps.

As a teenager West would sneak out of the monastery under the cover of dark and head to the local town. There he would spend hours just listening to the stories of Star Fleet officers visiting family and friends. The stories would play over and over in his head for days afterwards.

At the age of sixteen, West started to become restless. He struggled to mediate and felt the walls of the monastery were closing in on him. He spent most of his time practicing his martial arts or in the town. The temple elders noticed the change and knew the time had come to release him to find his own destiny. Before leaving the Shinning temple West had a Chinese tribal tattoo with the Shinning temple cross inked into his right upper arm to always remind him of his humble beginnings.

Adulthood

Two years later, West found himself a job working security aboard a space dock, orbiting the Mars Colonies. His travels had been fruitless, mainly because he had never built up communication skills as a child, and found it hard speaking or showing feelings. While working on the space port, he became good friends with a Farian female, Rasmus. Rasmus was a drifter but they got on well. He was briefly romantically involved with her, but they soon found out they made better friends than lovers. At the age of twenty one West met Don Anel. She was a Bajoran Star Fleet medical officer. They fell in love and got married a year later on her home planet Bajor. There were a few fallouts between Anel and Rasmus in the years that followed but West remained good friends with her.

It was the first time West had visited Bajor and he fell in love with the planet. West adopted his wife’s last name of Don and in Bajoran custom became known as Don West. West decided to enrol in the Bajora Military while on Bajor. He became a foot soldier of the Bajoran Military, designed to keep their home world safe. After two years West became a platoon leader and lead from the front. During a routine patrol of a neutral area in the Capital city of Bajor, West’s unit was ambushed by Cardassians. He lost three members of his unit but they managed to remove the Cardassian threat. West grew a hatred for Cardassians after that day.

At the age of twenty five West and Anel had a son and named him Don Than. West had his son’s name tattooed onto the inside of his right forearm. West spent many nights in the pubs listening to the stories of the Star Fleet officers visiting the planet, and felt his stories had no merit. On West’s twenty seventh birthday, he was visited by his best friend Rasmus and she informed him of her plans to join Star Fleet. Don Anel saw the glitter in West’s eyes when ever some one spoke of Star Fleet and decided to convince him to join Star Fleet too. West signed up for the next Star Fleet intake.

Starfleet

During his time at the Academy West did not socialize much. He put all his efforts into his studies and was well rewarded. Campus life was not West’s scene and he longed to graduate and start his career. Mid way through his second year, he fell in love with a lecturer of his, Kate Kaivun, a Junior Lieutenant at the time. He spent extra time in her classes just to see her for a little longer each day. West was too shy to approach Kate and kept his love for her a secret. He got divorced from his wife Don Anel at the end of his second year because of his feelings for Kate. West was busy with his final exams, when he decided to make his move. There was a New Years Eve party, being hosted at the Academy and West got as far as to dance with Kate. The next day West was told he had been assigned to the USS Columbia and their orders were to launch that week. West never saw Kate again.

West was assigned to the USS Columbia as a Security Officer. West was happy to be placed aboard the vessel. It had a diverse group of Starfleet officers aboard and was designed for hit and run missions, which were right in West’s line of thinking.

West’s first mission aboard the Columbia took them to Gamma Doradus III. It was a mission where the Columbia would have got in and out before any one knew they were there. But mission’s rarely go as per plan and West and a few members ended up fighting the Romulans on the surface. The away team ended up getting hit by a flash storm and West’s department head Lieutenant Commander Zzen got injured, throwing Ensign Wood and Midshipman West into the deep side, commanding the away team.

After completing the mission, West was promoted to Ensign and received the Star Fleet Commendation Medal for his involvement on Gamma Doradus III. The ceremony was held on the Star base Delta and at the same ceremony West was asked to run the Security department, while the Department Head was still injured.

West was still busy learning the finer points of running a department when the Columbia received their next mission. They were to evacuate an Intel Station Yadalla-3, Navata, on Yadalla Prime. On route to the planet, West was made the Chief of Security on the Columbia, a promotion which surprised a few people, but West was determined to prove his worth. The evacuation on the planet did not go a smoothly as planned and Captain Adaran and two of West’s security members were taken hostage. West was asked by the ship’s first officer to lead an away team to the planet to rescue the Starfleet personal. The rescue mission was successful, but West ended up in sickbay with some minor injuries which he quickly recovered from.

With the Yadalla Prime mission completed, West was promoted to full Lieutenant.

West, still aboard the Columbia, travelled to Caratas IV. Their mission was to collect data which had been lost. The mission started badly with the experimental stealth system giving problems. The Captain decided to send their first officer to the surface and gave West his first taste of command. It was a good learning curve for him, but he was not happy with his performance and knew he had a lot to learn still. The Caratas IV mission was not very successful and the Columbia paid a heavy price for the search for the data. The Chief Tactical Officer Trac Klapphroth lost her life.

West and Tracey had always liked each other and her death weighed heavy on him. In part he blamed himself for her death. As the Chief Security Officer he felt responsible for all the staff aboard the ship.
