Personal History

Drexis spent his whole life wanting to be a host. Born into affluent family with two joined parents, becoming a host was more than a boyhood dream – it was a legacy. He spent most of his youth with his nose in books, constantly studying and preparing himself for a scientific career. His parents, both scientists themselves, saw this as the fastest route to entering the symbiosis program.

While Drexis was spending his adolescent and young adult years preparing to enter the program, a joined Trill by the name of Vol was cutting a swath of crime across the alpha quadrant. The Vol symbiont had been cycling through hosts for over a thousand years, and had gained a reputation for "leading hosts astray." Never particularly violent – though he was not averse to defending himself – Vol had nonetheless managed to become a wanted criminal on dozens of worlds, mostly for crimes of extortion and burglary. Vol maintained a string of criminal contacts, mostly among the Orion pirates, gaining alliances, rivalries, and vendettas that spanned generations.

As Drexis entered the host candidate program, however, Vol found his own health failing, and knew it was time to return home for a new host. For Drex's part, he found the host candidate program particularly difficult. Despite proving himself academically and intellectually, the young Trill was constantly challenged to show more: More interests, more skills, and ultimately, more of himself. Eventually, after a number of conversations with a senior evaluator, Drexis realized that his years of preparation had been misguided. The symbiosis commission wasn't interested in the number of academic accolades a candidate could present, but rather a zest for life and trueness to one's self.

Admitting that he had no idea what his true passions were, Drexis submitted a letter a resignation from the program – which was prompty refused. It seemed the commission was impressed with his honestly and humility, and they offered him a chance to discover his true self before departing. They didn't promise him a symbiont, but a simply a chance.

Drexis created a new curriculum for himself, throwing himself into seminars, wildlife excursions, internships – whatever he could find that interested him. Over the span of months, he found himself attracted to a career in medicine, and began spending time with the guardians learning about Trill biology. He also spent time in the infirmary, observing implantations and visiting the disease ward to learn about exotic viruses and bacteria.

At last, Drexis decided to pursue a career in medicine and again turned in his resignation to the commission. This time, he was not only met with a rejection, but with the offer of a symbiont. Vol had returned, his host nearing death, and was requesting transplantation as soon as possible. The commission had met and decided that of all their candidates, Drexis was the most qualified to take on Vol and hopefully manage his less savory personality traits.

Drexis took a few days to consider his options and finally agreed. Post-implantation, Drexis Vol emerged as a confident, self-assured invidual, still dead-set on a medical career. Much to Vol's surprise, he found himself headed for a career in Star Fleet. For a thousand years, he'd never been a public servant of any kind, and had consistently be on the other side of the law. Now he would have the navigate the complicated life of a Star Fleet officer, atoning for his past sins and exploring the galaxy from a whole new perspective.
