Verterons are subatomic particles capable of traveling faster than the speed of light, and are present in wormholes.

These particles can interfere with sensor scans, and can allow for the extrapolation of a wormhole's subspace bearing by detecting their exit vector, allowing one to pinpoint the terminus spatial coordinate for any wormhole.

In high enough concentrations, verterons can pose a hazard to spacecraft, with a pulse of verterons being capable of obstructing sensors, or disabling the ship altogether by disabling the field coils.

Documented uses:

  • The Bajoran wormhole was formed by self-sustaining verterons. Present in dense concentrations, the verterons pose a hazard to navigation, clumping together in large, spherical nodes.
  • As of the mid-2150s, a verteron-emission array was installed on Mars to redirect comets for terraforming purposes.
