Personal History

Benjamin was born in York England, the eldest child to Natalie and Paul Vaughn. He is four years older than Jennifer and seven years older than Matthew. Natalie is a History Professor at the University of York and Paul is an Engineer on board a freighter currently plying between Earth and Rigel.

Because his father is away quite a lot Ben has taken on the role of master of the house in some ways to help out his mother. He is devoted to his sister ‘Jen’ and brother Matt. While Jen and Matt have always been contented with their lives, Ben has always craved something more because of his father’s ‘wild tales’ as his mother called them and has always been interested in travel.

However, it was his best friend Elaine Montgomery who led him down the path to be a security officer. It was she who suggested he should join Star Fleet, as this is what she was considering. He explained his wish to his father who to his surprise was most agreeable as he had actually tried but failed the entrance exams.

Meeting some friends of his father at his eighteenth birthday party in a bar, had given him the idea of joining the security division. The added bonus was that two members of the group were actual security officers, who were delighted to give Ben any information he required.

His mother was not overjoyed to hear of his decision to join Star Fleet but after awhile she settled into the fact that he would not be persuaded otherwise. When he was accepted into the Academy the family was overjoyed, although he still detected a slight doubt from his mother.

USS Yeager SC-8018; Stardate 20705.25 to Stardate 20709.30

Upon graduating, Ben joined the Yeager as his first assignment. He was thrust into a conflict against pirates led by a rogue SF Officer named Luke Johnson who was a former acquaintance of his CO, Capt Joseph E Valiant. His initial brush with combat resulted in stopping an attempted boarding action on the ship.

The Yeager was then assigned to investigate a derelict space station called Sierra 18. Again they faced the same Luke Johnson and his pirates who were using the derelict as their base of operations. A section of Marines was sent with them to help in retaking the station, these were led by Lt Col William Bateson with whom Ben served for a time. After taking back the station he received a promotion to Ensign, then learnt that the Yeager was to be decommissioned and the crew reassigned to Sierra 18.

Space Station Sierra-18; Stardate 20709.30 to Stardate 20901.14

The initial assignment was the complete overhaul of the station which was done by scavenging and salvage from the badly damaged Yeager. Until the arrival of the Corp of Engineers it was a busy and exhausting time for everyone. During this refit the station was hit by an Ion storm of force nine. This caused spatial distortions and affected some of the crew by giving them hallucinations and mental problems. Fortunately, Ben didn’t become affected so much as others.

The next instalment was a Medical Conference assigned to the station just at the outbreak of war with the Romulans. However, the station was then attacked by rogue Klingon forces, which were eventually stopped from taking the station. During this time Ben was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade, then full Lieutenant and assigned as Chief of Security.

The following information is only available to those with a security clearance of level Six and above.

Extract from Starfleet Medical record BV5674D – Top Secret:

Personal Log, recorded by Cdr Gemma Atkinson, Counselor and Psycologist, Starfleet Medical.

During Ben’s abduction by the Satarran’s from Sierra 18 he suffered severe torture and mental trauma. This evaluation was made to see if the Lieutenant would be fit enough to return to duty on the recommendation of Rear Admiral Grant, Security Sector Chief, Starfleet HQ.

Lieutenant Vaughn was put through various memory reconstruction therapies, as well as psychotherapy and counseling sessions. The results of his counselling sessions revealed that Benjamin has a remarkable resistance to pain, his survival of the torture was impressive. His final neural scans also show that he is ready to return to duty. On this note, he is to be assigned light duties at Security HQ and on Star Base Alpha for six months. Then he is to be re-evaluated for return to active duty.

End Log

Normal clearance level from here:

Ben never returned to Space Station Sierra 18, upon his medical evaluation he was assigned to Starfleet Security HQ and to Star Base Alpha. He was then returned to active duty and sent to Star Base Charlie for re-assignment aboard the USS Drake.

USS Drake CL-2509; Stardate 20901.14 to Stardate 20904.17

Assigned as Chief of Security for the shortest time aboard a vessel. The ship was sent on a mission to Tekna to help the population when it was recalled to SBA and the crew re-assigned to the battle cruiser Dauntless.

USS Dauntless BC-1553; Stardate 20904.17 to 20909..08

Promoted to Lieutenant Commander and assigned as Chief of Security. After a shakedown cruise the ship was tasked with continuing with the Drake’s former mission to Tekna. In Ben’s mind this was a disaster waiting to happen as Starfleet Command had not given them enough ships and personnel to help remove a population of four million souls before the planet self destructed. Returning to SBA with the few Teknan refugees they had managed to rescue, the crew were given shore leave.

The senior staff were suddenly recalled from shore leave by Commander Nielson about the sudden death’s of our CO, Captain Mike Wong and Lieutenant Ch’Thane in the Antarctic under suspicious circumstances. Ben was placed in command of an investigation team consisting of Engineers and Security to find out what happened. Upon reaching the alleged crash site the team discovered an underground base where they eventually found their missing CO and Lieutenant. They were brought aboard the Dauntless where Ben and Lieutenant Commander Komoscov were trapped in the transporter buffers, until released by the efforts of their FO, Commander Julia Nielson.

USS Dauntless BC-1553; Stardate 20909.08 to 21003.02

After the Antarctic mission the Dauntless was again dispatched to investigate some special anomalies near Vulcan, Tellar, Andor and Alpha Centauri. However, upon arrival at Vulcan the anomaly – a dimensional rift – had gone and everything appeared normal.

Returning to SBA the ship was diverted. After a vessel, calling itself the Pacific Princess appeared. This was suddenly changed to the Stolik when Starfleet Command ordered the Dauntless to take the six crewmembers into custody. They were allegedly SI agents who had gone rogue and were wanted for multiple terrorist charges. A group were dispatched in the Agassiz to follow them, but before we could do anything the Stolik exploded whilst in orbit over Risa. The six crew were beamed over to the Dauntless, but due to a malfunction in the transporter system they were all dead on arrival.

Returning to SBB for a spot of shore leave, we discovered this was to be our new home, as the Dauntless had been transferred to the 2nd Fleet. We then received orders to head for Gamma 7, a space station where we were to deliver supplies. As we arrived the crew found themselves beamed to the station by an eerie blue glow. We then learnt that a virus was running riot and after attempting to stop a major panic we found ourselves beamed back to the Dauntless – again by this eerie blue glow.

Once aboard the senior officers were greeted by someone calling himself Bill Clinton, a former Earth President from the 20th Century. We were to play some kind of 'game' or we would all die! True to form things happened, Julia was killed on the bridge by an exploding robot, Kórosenn was killed in Security by another one. Whoever these 'Great Ones' were they sure knew how to screw us up. Then we all 'died' when the Dauntless' core blew. Then we all reappeared, very much alive, to go through the whole thing again.

To cut a long painful story short, we somehow overcame all the trials put in our way and got the Dauntless back on its original mission, to Gamma-7. Lieutenant Ankar and myself went over the logs to try and fathom what had happened, according to this Clinton character, all the scans, logs etc of the 'Great Ones' interference have been removed, which proved to be true.

USS Dauntless BC-1553; Stardate 21007.19 to 21102.21

This mission started off relatively well. Our job was to escort a Romulan and Vulcan delegation to Amazonia III to retrieve somekind of artefacts. Arriving there we were told that all the senior staff would be needed for a ceremony of sorts. Whilst I didn't neccessarily agree with such protocol we followed their request and beamed down with Commodore Wong taking the major lead in the ceremony. Whilst there we discovered that something had happened to the Dauntless as we couldn't contact her.

Also, Commander's Kahyri and Arking became infected by some form of virus. It was deemed important to find a secure campsite which myself, MCapt Guarnere and some of the Security detail moved off to find. During this we were approached by catlike creatures who appeared to have some sort of telepathy who warned us away from the cave we had selected. Apparently, this was because they had a family there and felt threatened. We moved off and they followed us, revealing a cure for the virus using some of the plants on the planet.

The next stage was finding a way off planet. Which we managed after discovering the wreckage of the original Romulans shuttles. Due to Nasir's excellent work we actually used one of these ancient shuttles to leave the planet. Once in space we discovered that the Dauntless had gone, we followed her and managed to get aboard using command codes to activate knock out gas.

Once aboard we found that Vulcan terrorists had taken the ship and were heading for Romulus. The other thing was, they had killed or murdered several of the crew during their invasion. I only hope that they will pay for their nefarious deeds once we get them to Starfleet Command. Personally, I'd like nothing more than sending the whole lot of them out an airlock.

USS Dauntless BC-1553; Stardate 21102.21 to 21104.06

Finally, we made it back to Starbase Bravo. I was surprised, though grateful, at the medals given to us from Minister Lern for our efforts during this last mission. Going through letters of condolence and saying how parents son's or daughter's had died 'In the line of duty' is never easy. But this was more poignant as some of my personnel had been murdered.

Still, on a brighter note Caldecott and his team performed well and I have submitted commondations for those involved. Also, I have received a message to meet Captain Adaran on Bravo. What this is about I have no idea, I'll have to wait and see.

Transfer of the Vulcan prisoners has gone well and they are now in the tender hands of Bravo Security. Lets hope they find out why they did what they did.

What can I say? My meeting with Captain Adaran went well, it turns out that I am being promoted to Commander and offered the position as First Officer on the USS Columbia - a brand new ship.

To cap it all, my replacement is none other than LCdr Rolands, my former boss on the Yeager all those years ago. Needless to say I am exited and a little nervous at this new prospect.
