Personal History

Born and raised outside of Rieden, Dietrich grew up having many interests and hobbies. He grew up on the family Apple Orchards hunting and fishing and loving life on the farm. He also took on many other hobbies and studied martial arts from the young age of seven and continues to be occasionally active when time allows. From a young age, his father taught him to fish and his uncle taught him bow-hunting and he has always been a fan of the outdoors. When he gets to use a holodeck, he is either piloting spacecraft or outdoors doing some sort of activity. Sometimes when at space for a long period of time, it’s the closest to the outdoors he gets.

When he was seven years old, he met Gretchen Himmelwalker who lived in a small village not far from his own. They became the best of friends and spent most of their time together.

While going through school his grades were not always at the top of his class but usually better than average. He took part in his high school’s concert, jazz, and marching band and was band President his senior year. There he discovered his desire to lead that would later be part of his motivation for applying to Starfleet. He plays the saxophone, piano, and feadog (Irish Tin Whistle). While in high school, he and Gretchen grew even closer and after graduating high school, he proposed marriage to her and she accepted.

Shortly before their wedding, Gretchen, who was studying Science at Yale on Earth, took one of the school’s research shuttles to travel to the upper layers of Sol. While Dietrich was piloting the shuttle for her, a solar flare sent the ship off course and damaged its primary thrusters causing the ship to start to be pulled into the star. A Starfleet ship in orbit of Mercury rushed to their rescue. There was an explosion in the shuttle before they could make it to safety through an airlock. Dietrich made it through the airlock and reached back for Gretchen who was caught in the flames as the airlock closed on his arm causing him to lose his right arm from just above the elbow down.

Devastated by the loss of his fiancée, Dietrich left the Sol System and built a home in the mountains of Vega. Sensor logs indicated that the solar flare could have been detected and it was piloting error, which only added to his sorrow. He stayed on Vega alone living off of the land before he decided to return to Earth and apply for Starfleet at age 21. It was a Starfleet ship that saved his life when visiting Sol and he always had a fascination for the military to begin with so he knew entering Starfleet was his destiny. He was also determined to counter his fear of piloting since Gretchen’s death.

Upon graduating from Starfleet Academy, Midshipman Kaiser was assigned to the USS Yeager SC-8018 where he was the helmsman under Captain Joseph Valiant and the Chief Tactical officer Lieutenant Commander Amalek Barrett. While on shoreleave on Collins IV, Kaiser was poisoned and was clinically dead until the use of a highly experimental technique by Doctor Callum Hicks saved his life. He later piloted the ship during the retaking of Space Station Sierra 18 and flew a shuttle getting a detachment of marines to the station and assisted them in their mission of helping retake the station. During the retaking of the station, Petty Officer Second Class Thomas Varitek was killed. This was the first, but unfortunately not the last, person to die under Kaiser's supervision.

He was then assigned to Space Station Sierra 18. During his time on the Yeager and Sierra 18, Kaiser became close friends with then Chief Engineer Julia Nielson. A friendship that was tried during an Ion Storm that struck the station causing many of the crew to lose their minds. Kaiser was forced to stun Nielson before she could shoot herself with a phaser.

Shortly before the Second Romulan War broke out, renegade Klingon ships attacked Sierra 18. Kaiser's tactical defense of the station played a large part in the successful destruction of several of the Klingon ships but not without a large cost in damage to the station and the loss of dozens of crewmembers. Two of the crewman under his command, Crewman Ella Vasquez and Petty Officer First Class Layna were both killed in the attack. The loss of these crew members was difficult for Kaiser.

Kaiser could constantly rely on Master Chief Petty Officer William Bishop as he began and the two grew to trust each other through the years.

During the Second Romulan War, Space Station Sierra 18 was taken over by Romulans and then Lieutenant Kaiser was held prisoner and tortured by the Romulan Centurion Faemenan. Kaiser had his leg broken and was whipped severely only to be healed. He endured four weeks of having organs removed and replaced and mental torture. During his time kept as a Prisoner of War, he was able to kill one Romulan guard which resulted in his titanium arm being taken from him.

During this time, he witnessed his believed to be dead ex-fiancee torture him and now believes she was a Romulan defector. A week before Sierra 18 was liberated, Kaiser, along with Lieutenant Commanders Gabriel Archer and Amalek Barrett, they managed to escape and attack several Romulan strongholds on the station weakening the station's defenses in time for a counter attack from Starfleet.

Once the station was liberated, Kaiser no longer wanted the titanium arm and chose a cloned arm to replace it. Kaiser soon later passed his Command Officer's Test after the second attempt where his desire to put emotion before logic was tested. He was promoted to Space Station Sierra 18's Second Officer, Chief Tactical Officer, and to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. As he struggled to put behind him the horrible experience of being a POW, he also took the challenge of being the station's Second Officer and Chief Tactical Officer extremely seriously.

On a mission with then Commodore Roberts on the USS Jefferson, Kaiser was left in command of the ship. During an investigation of an anomaly, he opted to try entering what seemed to be a wormhole. This drained the power from the ship that later crashed on Betazed in an alternate universe. This killed half the crew and almost destroyed the ship. They encountered natives on the planet that after making first contact cautiously, brought them to their village. This happened at the same time they noticed stars disappearing from the sky. Eventually the planet was destroyed and Kaiser was all that remained in the universe. He remained there for an infinite period of time that all at once passed in an instant but lasted a lifetime. He saw and experienced everything yet nothing at the same time. He walked away from the experience not fully able to grasp everything he had seen.

Upon returning to Sierra 18, it left him thinking those lost on the mission and about how the outcomes of his decisions can have drastic impacts on the lives of his crew.

It was not long after this time that he first met a young Orion Engineer named Layna Glau. The two quickly fell for each other and began a relationship.

During an attempted terrorist attack on the station, Kaiser was wounded in disarming one of the terrorists. Upon recovery, he again found himself in trouble while going to the Promenade for breakfast. An alien fight began and Kaiser along with security officers became involved in a shootout. Kaiser was shot and killed in the incident despite the best efforts of the station's medical team.

The alien was defeated and it's attacker, a being of evolution far beyond that of any within the Federation, healed Kaiser bringing him back. Kaiser was then promoted to Acting First Officer of the station.

It wasn't long after Kaiser's recovery that an alien force, later known as the Krynar, came through the Bajorian wormhole and attacked Starbase Charlie and Bajor destroying both. The warship made it's way to Sierra 18 were the Jefferson and a small armada of Federation and Klingon ships fought off the Krynar at the Battle of Space Station Sierra 18 but not before the Krynar warship destroyed Space Station Sierra 18 killing the majority of the crew.

Upon returning to Starbase Alpha, Kaiser was assigned along with the rest of the Space Station Sierra 18 survivors to the USS Intrepid CA-1708. They immediately deployed to continue the war effort including the testing of an experimental weapon that would hopefully lead to a change in the tide of the war.

Kaiser was on board the USS Intrepid when Earth was destroyed by the Krynar but the Intrepid jumped back in time by slingshot around Sol and was able to undo the attack. Shortly after that, during a massive counter attack from Starfleet, the Krynar homeworld was destroyed bringing the war to an end and making certain the Krynar would no longer be a threat to the Federation.

While assigned to the Intrepid for a series of exploratory missions, Kaiser was given temporary command of the Intrepid while Captain Archer was involved in experiments in Science Lab 13 under strict orders not to be disturbed. During this time the Intrepid witnessed the first warp flight of the Vjeeiak on the planet Adhira. While initiated First Contact, the away team was caught in the middle of a terrorist attack severely injuring Kaiser. While incapacitated, the capable crew of the Intrepid were able to have all but one crew member returned to the ship safely with the civil war ending amicably for the people on Adhira.

After the Adhira, Kaiser married his long term girlfriend, Layna Glau, an Engineering Ensign on the Intrepid.

During the Battle of Gulanda, after defeating the Korim Fleet, Ensign Layna Glau stole a shuttle to disperse the cure for the virus plaguing the planet below. An unidentified ship led by a man known as The Reaper revealed itself firing on the Intrepid killing several including Kaiser's close friends Ki'sa Orano and Jordan Thrace. The Reaper then attacked the shuttle piloted Layna Glau destroying it killing Kaiser's wife. It was unknown to Kaiser that Layna Glau was pregnant with their child who was lost as well.

It was shortly after this mission that Julia Kaiser, Layna and Dietrich's daughter from an alternate future, traveled back to prevent her father's death. As the future she came from had her mother alive it became clear her trip back in time accidentally entered an alternate universe as well as the past. Together Julia and Dietrich helped each other grieve the loss of Layna.

Eighteen months after the death of his wife, Kaiser and a team of his senior officers began tracking down the Reaper in a specialized shuttle built by Kaiser and the then Chief Engineer Jadaris. They tracked a Ferengi merchant who had dealings with the Reaper and from there tracked the Reaper's outpost and operating under cloak was able to infiltrate the base and plant explosives. During the attack, his daughter Julia was shot and injured. Meanwhile the USS Intrepid was uncovered the plot by the Reaper to unleash a bioweapon on an unsuspecting planet. Once returning to the Intrepid the crew raced to intercept the Reaper's ship, the Harbinger, and stop them from unleashing the weapon. During the battle, the Harbinger disabled the Intrepid. Kaiser launched in his shuttle, the Kristyn, and was able to destroy the torpedoes carrying the virus and the, making a suicide run at warp into the Harbinger.

This destroyed the Kristyn and left the crew believing Kaiser to be dead for a few days. Kaiser, however, had dematerialized himself into the pattern buffer in hopes of surviving the suicide run. Jadaris was able to retrieve the pattern buffer and rescue Kaiser. It took several days for the entire crew to believe he was genuinely alive.
