The universal translator (also called UT or translator circuit) is a device used to provide real-time two-way translation of spoken languages.

It operates by sensing and comparing brain-wave frequencies, then selecting comparable concepts to use as a basis for translation. It then provides the necessary grammar before translating it’s findings into the user’s language using a voice approximation of whatever the creature on the sending end is using.

On Federation vessels, universal translators are linked into the crew’s combadges and a ship’s communication array. There are several other civilian versions available, including a Ferengi version that is implanted in the ear.

As sophisticated as this technology is, as new languages are encountered there are instances where the UT has trouble analyzing the syntax and grammar. Sufficient exposure to the language will often rectify this problem. Another possible solution is to input the neural patterns and cortical scans of the subject to assist the UT. Despite those methods, occasionally the UT will still have troubles translating a language.
