History
The word "zephyr" means a light or western-blowing wind, named so for "Zephyrus", the Greek God who personified the west wind.
Lineage
USS Zephyr, NCC-92880 is the 3rd starship to bear the name. The following vessels have carried the name 'Zephyr':
- Zephyr, a 1781 ship, was built at Whitby, UK, and was abandoned in 1840 due to unknown circumstances.
- Zephyr, a 1790 ship, was built on the River Thames in 1790, serving the British East India Company from 1796 until captured by a French privateer in 1798.
- Zephyr, an 1810 whaler ship, was built in the United States, and came into British hands circa 1813.
- RV Zephyr, a research vessel, was owned by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and operated from 2001-2013.
- HMS Zephyr, a Z-class destroyer, was launched in 1942 and sailed until 1953.
- USS Zephyr, a Cyclone-class patrol ship for the United States Navy, sailed form 1994 to 2021.
