Mission Summary

Captain's Logs

Captain Jennifer Braggins

Stardate 22405.22

The Yeager has been assigned to re-chart the systems that make up the border between the Federation and the Talarian Republic, a mission that should take us around three months including travel time. Following completion of the mission we are to report to Starbase 214 for further instructions. I am confident the crew will perform these duties to the best of their abilities, and the extended travel time will give us ample opportunity to shake down the systems of this newest version of the Yeager.

End Log.

Supplemental, Personal:

We've once again been shuffled off to the ass-end of nowhere, and yet I sense a greater purpose behind this than just getting us out of the way. 214 is the major hub for Talarian refugees travelling into Federation space, and where alleged clandestine support efforts are being organised.

Could it be we have been sent out to assist?

Stardate 22406.08

We are five weeks into our shakedown cruise and one week into our survey and mapping mission. For the most part, the crew are performing well, though I now have to question my initial enthusiasm for this mission. We have been plagued my technical problems, only partly caused due to the Yeager's unorthodox design, the rest seemingly caused by substandard construction work and materials from the shipyards; Starfleet couldn't cancel a hull so close to completion, so they cheaped out on the components instead.

The glitches have, however, kept things interesting. Survey missions aren't the most thrilling assignments and crew performance can slip as a result.

So far we have found nothing exciting, though I am now being informed we may have a potential sensor contact attempting to cross the border.

We shall see.

Stardate 22407.31

We have crossed the border into Talarian territory in response from a distress call received from an ancient DY-150 class ship in a decaying orbit around an M-class planet. Prior to this, we had stopped and searched the Disreputable Damsel, Obadiah Heathridge commanding, as a potential smuggler. He was carrying medical supplies and appeared to have been helping Talarian refugees cross the border, so I let him go.

We have also made contact with the CDS Os'rusa under the command of Gul Hanar; he indicated he was suspicious of our intentions on the border and warned us to keep to our own side, though he appeared to be operating under the oversight of a civilian, who we suspect may be a representative of the Obsidian Order. Now we are on the wrong side of the border, even answering a legitimate distress call in what is not technically Cardassian space, I expect to see the Os'rusa again soon.

I only hope we can help the passengers of the DY-150 before we do.

End Log.

Stardate 202412.02

We have recovered approximately one hundred survivors from the sleeper ship SS Lord Franklin. Apparently it was stolen from a dry dock while undergoing refit to transport a Human separatist movement away from Earth and the "influence" of aliens; allegedly they thought that influence would destroy all life on Earth. They were very nearly right, on a few occasions.

The Os'rusa followed us, at a velocity we've not seen Cardassian warships achieve before. Though we have not confirmed that the Cardassian Union has Slipstream capability, we must now assume that is the case. Long-range sensors detected an extremely powerful energy source relatively close to our location, it's possible the Cardassians are using Talarian territory as some sort of testing ground for new and advanced technologies.

The Os'rusa currently has us cornered; we can't escape without detection or directly engaging. I have made the decision to strike first in the hope of blinding the Os'rusa or disabling her engines, so that the Yeager can escape to Federation space.

Let the record show I made this decision unilaterally, and that my crew are not to be held accountable for following my orders in this matter.

Crew Logs

Commander Peter Jensen

Stardate 202407.25

First Officer's log, Stardate 22407.25. We found no weapons or munitions or anything of a truly heinous nature on the Disreputable Damsel. Only confirmed cargo was medical supplies. Her Captain clearly resented our presence, but such is the way of law enforcement, I'd imagine. We could have easily spent more time searching, but were recalled and had little time in the end. For what purpose, I am on my way to the Bridge to find out.

I wonder what could be so important. End log

Stardate 202501.10

Well, that was certainly a dicey situation. We found ourselves once more on the wrong end of threats, when we were forced to cross into former Talarian space. Yes, former. Talarian society might not be in accordance with our values, but no one deserves what the Cardassians have done to them. My mind goes back to the stories from the occupation of Bajor. Even if there technically speaking is a Talarian government, it is no such thing. It is a rubber stamp on whatever the Cardassians demand"

He paused, taking a deep breath

"No matter. We were forced to cross into Talarian space to rescue the S. S. Lord Franklin and the people in stasis there. As naps go, that's one heck of a nap. At waking up at a most inopportune time and in a most inopportune place. Things got tense for a few moments. We were accosted by a Cardassian vessel, the CDS Os'rusa, which then proceeded to threaten us with all manners of calamity."

Another small pause.

"The details of the goings-on while the Captain was aboard the Franklin will be in my full report.", he mentioned, not feeling very inclined to go through it all again. "I'm just happy we managed to pull through it it one piece. And I would like to officially state my admiration for the way Leftenants Black and T'Lari handled themselves. That maneuvre was not easy to pull of, and actually managing it was a feat."

Then he sighed.

"The record will show that I authorized use of a priority one-channel for Leftenant Black after we had escaped to safety. I am perfectly ready to explain the reason as to why I did this, but I feel that it does not belong in my log, as it is a delicate matter. Anyone reviewing this who feel so inclined, should feel free to contact me, and I will be happy to explain. Now we are going to take on new crew. Three brand new officers, fresh from the Academy: Midshipmen Bremner in Medical, Bowman in the Science department, and Campbell in Engineering. I have a lot of optimism that they'll do us and themselves credit. My one concern is Commander Jadaris. Despite what some might think, I do not care at all about the fact that he's Gorn. I have neither the time nor the patience for prejudice in others, and certainly not in myself", he stated firmly and quickly.

While it was indeed true that he had no problem with Gorn, the full truth - that would have never passed his lips of course - was that had Jadaris been Ferengi, his feelings on the matter would have been very different.

"My concern is with the Commander being a scientist, not an engineer primarily. I am of course aware of his qualifications and service history. I'm not saying he isn't qualified. What worries me, is which side of him is strongest: The theoretical scientist or the practical engineer. Because if it's the former, not only will we possibly have a problem in Engineering, but it might end up causing friction with LCdr Qi if he feels that his areas are being stepped on"

He sighed again and paused for a few moments.

"However, I hope very much that I am worrying about nothing. And his dedication and commitment, no one can question. He is by all standards and exemplary officer that we can be proud to serve with. My one and only worry is what I've just described. But time will tell, and I would be more than happy to eat crow here", he finished.

A final pause before he spoke up again:

Lieutenant Theresa Black

Stardate: 202408.13

It's after hours. Black is sitting slumped back on her sofa. Her hair, normally tied back is now loose, and somewhat unkempt. Her uniform jacket is open. She has a large glass of red wine in her hand, and a significantly almost empty bottle is visible behind her. She's obviously been crying.

“So, I guess I better make this damn log. Called Dad. He's okay. That's all I can do being stuck out here. Even if I left now, which I can't. It's going to be a three month trip back to shitty old Earth. Still one less reason to have to go back there now, I guess.”

She takes a large swig of the wine.

“Met with the neighbours earlier. Lovely Cardy couple. Gull Hanar-ra-ra and his... Wife. They seemed... Yeah.”

She puts down the wine and leans forward, resting her elbows on her knees.

“We found an old DY-150 today. Lots of frozen people. Captain went over there. Would have been nice to take a look at it, but those things were deathtraps back in the day. I mean, who sits there and thinks to themselves; 'I know, let's nail a submarine to a rocket?' I know Jensen wasn't happy Braggins went over there... I don't know why, but he's looking a bit more, cute recently. Hmm...”

She gave an over theatrical wink, and then picked up the glass again and sniffed what was left in it, before reaching back and refilling it with the remains of the bottle.

“This is a good one, it's a...” She squinted at the label. “Red one. Cheers.” She added before she swirled it and drained it. Her face screwing up as she took the hit from the bitter sediment in the bottom.

“Blagh...” She exclaimed poking out her tongue as she looked about for another. Which there didn't seem to be. Before she looked back at the screen, and realising that it was still recording, she lent forward further slipping off the sofa onto her knees and shuffled nearer the screen so that her face filled it.

“Got to go now. This ship won't fly itself. It's been a really shitty day. And I want a wee.” Then she looked directly into the screen and said; “Bye Mum. I miss you.” Before planting a big sloppy kiss on the screen. And it went blank.

Lieutenant Kal-Geal Beinn

Stardate 202501.10

I think. Star and planet dates are so weird."

"Lieutenant Kal-Geal Beinn recording.."

"For the record, humans are weird. They smell strange, their furless bodies are squishy, and they have strange feelings. Not to mention they lack adjustable ears and a tail. But, the ones on this mission were especially strange. They had that cryopod smell to them, as well as the arrogance of humans. Later research showed them to be leaving their ruling pack and setting off to find a new home. Sadly, they won't be able to find that now that the galaxy has changed. The Cardassians have become more aggressive over time, though they too are squishy and break too easily. Maybe I should have a chat with Raiju about who lasts longer when shaken, if they could understand my vocalizations. My body language I think they get, but just not the other stuff."

"Lieutenant Commander Qi has passed their physical with flying colors, or so the human phrase goes. Personally, I prefer he bled well and handled himself with honor, but he didn't actually shed any blood. I tested his ability to make decisions under duress, his physical skill, and his ability to live with his decisions, and he passed. If I stay aboard this vessel, I will hopefully be able to teach him my language, but I do intend to let Captain Braggins know I believe there others to be more effective than myself at being the CMO. Maybe they'll let me stay as a combat medic, or as a botanist, but, not Chief Medical Officer. The honor of the post was good, but, I feel I was promoted beyond what expectations I can fulfill as a Child of San-Tarah."

"Also, Security needs to stop having accidents all the time in simulations. I know a few petty officers who need some time learning to pull their claws, but maybe Lieutenant d'Tor'an will let me teach them when we have hand-to-hand training. That is assuming they don't turn into squeaky toys on seeing me enter the simulation."

"Well, time for my first and last log to be over. May the next CMO's hunt be plentiful."

"End log."

The log ends along with a long howl of farewell in San-Tarah.
