Now often described as a solution looking for a problem, the USS Typhon was the first and ultimately only vessel in a line of ships that was developed as a combat support platform after Admiral Braggins' experiments with the USS Ticonderoga proved successful. Despite the demilitarisation of Star Fleet, and the mothballing of all "warships", the Typhon retains extremely niche applications within Star Fleet. Sometimes classified as a mobile base, this relatively small starship carries two wings of fighters and is generally meant to serve as a command and control hub for an area of space beyond the normal range of a starbase, operating in support of other small starships.

Unlike the larger Federation-class or Jupiter-class that was due to replace it, the Typhon is closer in scale to a Heavy Cruiser; this allows it to keep up with a strike fleet or rapidly reach a crisis zone. Most of the internal volume is dedicated to the Flight Deck and storage for other small craft; the Typhon also carries minimal defensive armament, and must rely on her fighters or escorting craft to protect her during a fight. Though primarily designed as a Light Carrier, the Typhon's internal space is modular and allows the ship to be pressed into service as a personnel transport, cargo carrier, or medical transport if required.

It is currently assigned to the Star Fleet Special Response Force and is the home base of Valkyrie Squadron.
