The USS Luna is a Luna Class Reconnaissance Science Vessel, launched in 2378 as the test bed for a new class. For twenty years she served as a testbed and survey vessel, fulfilling but unglamorous work, before being assigned to Pathfinder Project. In the wake of the Attack on the Borg Megasphere, Starfleet Command put together an Expeditionary Force of newly developed and commissioned starships with cutting edge technology, such as quantum slipstream drives, to explore the Delta Quadrant with two aims; first to seek the origins of the Borg and potential vulnerabilities, and also hopefully discover the fate of the long lost USS Voyager.
After Pathfinder's return to the Alpha Quadrant, the USS Luna was taken by the Starship Design Team at Utopia Planitia for scrutiny. A design flaw had possibly been uncovered in the Luna class, and as the test bed for the class the USS Luna needed to be tested. As such the crew were rotated to new ships, and a skeleton crew of engineers posted to begin going over her systems one by one.
Lineage
The USS Luna was named after Earth's moon in Sol system. In Terran mythology, Luna was the Roman name given to the goddess of the moon and often presented as the female complement to the Sun, or Sol. She was also presented not as a goddess in her own right, but as an epithet applied to other goddesses such as Diana and Juno.
- USS Luna (AKS-7) was an Acubens-class general stores issue ship built for the United States Navy during World War II as part of the Liberty Ship program.
