Type 1 Runabout

The Type 1 Runabout is a Federation runabout put into operation in the early 25th Century. Designed almost as a small Starship in its own right, the Marine Combat Dropship has a powerful reactor core for a vessel its size, and thanks to the inclusion of bunk rooms and a sonic shower for the crew, can operate on its own for reasonably extensive missions without resupply or the support of a parent Starship - allowing for a variety of mission profiles that would free up larger ships for more important duties. The cargo module aft of the cockpit is not, like the older Danube-class, a series of modules, but rather a complete bay that can be swapped out or equipped as required specifically for a particular mission. This modular nature of the vessel endeared the vessel to Star Fleet Command, and attracted the attention of Special Operations who acquired an undisclosed amount for their own needs.

The near-legendary modular nature of the Type-1 means it has filled virtually every mission profile that Star Fleet requires of a vessel: from personnel transport to prisoner transport, planetary survey to intelligence-gathering, medical evacuation to customs interdiction and seek-and-destroy missions. Though incredibly adaptable, the Runabout's small size and limited range mean that operations are generally limited to a planetary system or area local to a Star Fleet vessel or Starbase.

Runabouts are named at CO's discretion. Registry numbers on runabouts start with the host ship ID number, then a dash and a letter designation based on the number of craft that the host has had.

For example, the USS Copernicus's Type 1 Runabout's name and registry would be: Sagan, 9035-A.
