Tuvan Syndrome is a neurological disease, which affects mainly Romulans, Vulcans, and Rigelians, and may affect those with ancestors of such.

  • It is typically degenerative, which increases over time, and incurable.

The disease is very similar to the Human disease of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis ("ALS," also known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease"), though it does not act as quickly.
In the normal progression of degeneration, the patient begins by experiencing a loss of motor skills over the course of ten to fifteen years.
The final life expectancy is somewhere in the twenty to twenty-five year range, depending on how fast the disease is progressing.

  • Affecting the facial nerve, it causes a slight facial droop, and general motor weakness.
  • It also affects the respiratory muscles, which leads to respiratory failure in its late stages.

The United Federation of Planets have several studies on this disease, which revealed early symptoms of displaced weakness of facial muscles, irregular and displaced eyelids.
Studies also revealed that this disease had the potential for acceleration due to the exposure of nadion radiation.

As of 2375, Starfleet Medical still had not found a cure.
