Personal History

The youngest of two children, Samantha Trent was a shy child who received a rather ordinary middle-class upbringing. While her older brother was a natural athlete who eventually went on to become a professional soccer player, she was clumsy as a young girl and had no aptitude for sports. Her father, a secondary school teacher, encouraged her to pursue academics, instilling in her a love of great books. She soon became an avid reader, and her studiousness helped her graduate secondary school with honors.

Encouraged by her school councilor to apply to Star Fleet Academy, she majored in administration and political science, aiming for a career in the command division as an administrative assistant, echoing the career of her mother who had served in a similar capacity for the government of Tycho City on Luna. She excelled at her studies, and upon graduation from the Academy, she was immediately assignment as an assistant to the schools' Tactical Dean, at his request. She spent two years working for him, eventually earning a promotion to lieutenant junior grade and a transfer to Jupiter Station, where she served as assistant to the base commander. Two years later she was promoted to lieutenant and assigned as the special assistant the 2nd Fleet Commander. After five years of service in that position, and now a lieutenant commander, she was put on the command track and transferred to Star Base 10 to serve as first officer.

Having spent much of her time during school and the Academy studying and focusing on her education, Samantha rarely dated or had a very active social life. Her early years as an assistant were also focused on her career and advancement. It wasn't until she was serving on SB 10 that she began to come out of her shell. Still, she remained a rather private person, and she found it hard to maintain relationships. She rarely has had a romantic relationship that has lasted more then two or three months, as she's not always willing to open herself up to a partner in the way necessary to foster the kind of trust needed to create anything long term. Many of those she has been involved with have also not been the best choices. She tends to find herself attracted to people who aren't good for her, so she's very hesitant to commit herself at any deep level.

After two years on SB 10, she was transferred to the USS Santa Fe to gain experience working on a starship. She found that she enjoyed the role of first officer. As she'd lost much of her shyness, dealing with people was no longer a problem for her, but she still was more comfortable with paperwork and administrative duties than she was interacting with the crew, and when she was promoted to captain and made commanding officer of the USS Barcelona two years later, she continued doing much of the administrative duties that her first officer would normally do while letting him work more directly with the crew.

She'd expected her assignment on the Barcelona to be a quiet, educational experience that would help her earn the qualifications needed to gain a high-level position at Star Fleet Command, but a month after her promotion the Third Federation-Romulan War broke out, and she found herself on the front lines of a conflict. Though she'd studied battle tactics at the Academy, she'd rarely had the chance to practice them or to apply them in real life. She learned quickly, however, applying herself to studying contemporary techniques and observing other starships, both Federation and Romulan, in battle. Her aptitude in ship-to-ship combat impressed her superiors, and when the center chair of the USS Freedom became open, she was transferred there and given a promotion to both commodore and group commander.

She served the rest of the war on the Freedom, and once the conflict had ended she'd found herself weary of life on a starship. She hated the traveling it involved, and the future only promised more of that as the 2nd Fleet became directly involved in helping the Romulan Exodus. She longed for the stability of a base assignment again, and the moment she heard that Star Base Bravo was undergoing a personnel change, she submitted her application, beating out fourteen other candidates for the job. And so she left the Freedom for SBB, happily looking forward to the challenges she would face running a station populated by a quarter of a million people.
