Personal History

Born one of two of the only Orions on the remote Isle of Islay in Scotland, Vari found herself isolated from her peers at a very early age. Both she and her brother were the product of a tryst. Her parents met at a coffee shop in Glasgow, and despite having very little in common - her mother being an artist and her father a scientist - they found they had a purely physical attraction. When Marina returned to Islay, she had no intention of contacting Nirral - until she discovered she was pregnant with the twins.

Throughout the first years of her life, Vari found it hard to connect with her peers. To them, she was something they’d only seen on the holo-net and the initial fascination and awe at her green skin turned into her becoming a target. Many of the other children pushed her over or ‘accidentally’ nicked her to see if she bled red like the rest of them. The teachers, unused to dealing with such behaviour, reprimanded them with nothing more than ‘don’t do it again’.

In her teenage years, struggling to control her pheromones, Vari was the subject of leers from many of the boys, and this led to her drawing further into herself. Despite her pheromones being (mostly) under control, many of her fellow students continued to make comments. This got especially worse as they learned more about the history of the Federation - and in particular, the Orion slave trade. During a skiing trip to Switzerland with the school - something she was forced into rather than wanting to go - she met a young Andorian man by the name of Ryhalar. He was the first person to pay attention to her for more than her looks, and she very much enjoyed their time together. When she left, however, they mutually agreed to keep their memories in Switzerland. This remains one of her fondest memories.

At age 13, she met Arya Jones. Similarly distanced from the rest of the community, having just moved from Australia, the two became quick friends. It was due to this friendship that her mother met Arya’s father - Ewan - and fell in love. Within a year and a half, Arya and Vari were stepsisters, and six months after that shared a younger sister, Elizabeth.

Despite her father making an effort to visit when he could, the two were not close. She blamed him for the harassment she received at school, and often their discussions were filled with awkward silences. His visits were few and far between, due to much of his work being done on Orion, and she maintained for a long time that even if he didn’t visit much he could have commed more. Regardless, as she matured she found herself talking to him more, and found they had more in common than she thought. He started telling her some of the history of Star Fleet, and she slowly warmed up to him.

It was thanks to her father that she learned about Doctor Leonard McCoy. She found his life fascinating, and was particularly interested in some of his more unusual achievements. In particular, his healing of a silicone-based alien intrigued her - the fact he had managed to heal an alien with a completely unknown makeup fascinated her and she decided she was going to work to do the same field.

When she finally joined the Academy, Vari found herself less of an outsider. Though there weren’t many Orions, there were plenty of other races - including other hybrids. She didn’t make many close friends, preferring to focus on her studies, but enjoyed the Academy far more than her life before, making her visits few and far between. While she keeps in contact with her family back on Islay, she very rarely returns, finding the presence of other non-humans (and not-completely-humans) a refreshing change.

When she finished the Academy, Vari was assigned to the USS Ozaki. Bedbound for the early part of the mission, she emerged when she heard trouble- and not a moment too soon. Shortly after arriving in Sickbay, her CMO, Doctor Robert, who was taken into a mind meld with a Vulcan- T’Maire- who was both possessed and had initiated the Pon Farr. This left Vari feeling very much out of her depth and unsure of what to do- in the past, she’d never really had to face up to anything even remotely similar, and it left her feeling at times somewhat useless, as there was nothing she could think of to bring them out of it- in the end, it was a dangerous procedure that brought them out of it, that left T’Maire in a dangerous condition.

Not long after, Captain Tam was shot by another crew member who was possessed by another of the lifeforms. Vari had to get onto the bridge to save the Captain’s life, as Doctor Robert could not move too far from T’Maire. Things only escalated when a fire broke out in the Science Labs. This drove Vari to a brief anxious and angry outburst. She felt powerless and unable to help, and as a physician, this bothered her greatly. However, the crew members were transported from the Labs and eventually recovered in Sickbay.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Psychology and Xenobiology
Academy Minor(s): History, Archaeology, Microbiology
Hobbies and Pastimes: Often found reading, writing or drawing
Short-Term Goals: Work towards finding more effective methods for helping people with mental health issues
Long-Term Goals: She would love to find a cure for some of the currently ‘incurable’ diseases
Personality: Quite bubbly and sarcastic. She is quite touchy-feely with other people, enjoying casual physical contact at almost every opportunity. Despite this, she is also very sensitive to anything she perceives as ‘criticism’ - even the smallest comment can upset her - and is quite nervous when it comes to new/difficult situations. She is, however, working on developing a thicker skin, in order to better deal with these issues. Underneath this aspect of her personality, she is rather cynical, due to bullying in her youth making her slow to trust.
Sense of Humor: Very sarcastic and somewhat self-deprecating
Phobias: Since she was a child, she has been quite afraid of birds and dogs. She claims it’s due to the way they move too fast, but in reality it’s thanks to her grandmother owning the creatures when she was a child. The dog often growled at her and bared his teeth, and the birds- when they were let out- would dive towards her head. While she used to be afraid of thunder and lightning, she was once forced to stay outside in it with her brother, and he pointed out the beauty of it while they huddled together and watched. When she saw it that way, she was able to get over it, and even enjoyed it somewhat.
Likes: Mythology, travelling, cats
Dislikes: Spicy food
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Gossip, whining
Bad Habits or Vices: She can’t help eating chocolate if it’s near her
Achievements: Shortly after receiving her medical license, she was forced to deliver her niece in the back of a car. She feels it really awakened her to how fast-thinking she’d have to be in such situations, and that her patients would be far from quiet. It also helped her control her own panic in such situations, as it could have ended horribly if even one thing had gone wrong, and dealing with such a difficult situation while having a personal connection to it helped her hone her focus further
Disappointments: She hates her hair. She thinks it’s too messy and hates when it comes out of its ponytail
Illnesses: None
Strengths: Being able to focus completely on a task, which is helpful in emergencies
Weaknesses: She can become unnerved very quickly by new situations, causing shakiness and nervousness
Fears: Making a fatal mistake while in charge of something
Prejudices: She isn’t always on the best of terms with humans. While she’s changed her attitudes since joining the Academy, she finds it very difficult to get along with them if they make even the smallest comment about her looks unless she knows them well.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Casual and comfortable. Whenever she can, she will wear pajamas
Distinguishing Features: None
Pets: None
Friends: Arya Jones

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: The death of her grandmother affected her greatly, as she had been her primary carer in her early years
Best Time: Delivering her niece- despite it being in the back seat of a car in the snow, being screamed at by her angry sister-in-law, she considers it her ‘best moment’
Most Crucial Experience: Getting trapped in the snow with her distant father. The required interaction made them realize they had a lot in common, and since then she has become quite close to him and keeps in regular contact
Role Model: Doctor Leonard McCoy is her role model, and the reason she chose to become a doctor in Starfleet
