Personal History

The family is said to have been one of the founding families of a private colony. Their family business centered on the restoration of vintage space fighter craft. The colony had a number of collectors and enthusiasts, but some of the craft were also sold as trade for various supplies for the colony and was part of a very lucrative exchange for a number of years. Kalli grew up learning how to work with her father and shared his passion for repairing the various craft. Unfortunately, the colony was attacked in a raid by unknown forces desiring to take what they didn’t wish to pay for. A distress signal was sent out, but by the time any assistance arrived, there were very few survivors and the colony was completely destroyed. It is unclear why the distress signal was not responded to for such a long time, but assistance did not arrive until months after the incident. The colony originally is estimated to have had a few thousand residents, but less than one hundred survivors were rescued. Kalli was found to be caring for a group of children who accounted for almost half of the survivors recovered. There were many conflicting reports about what happened between the attack and rescue, but it was determined that a significant number of the bodies recovered actually died while awaiting rescue.

SEALED REPORT: After years of investigation by a small group of Vulcans who were studying the demise of the Colony, including interviews with many of the survivors in the years following their rescue, some facts were uncovered. The attack on the colony was not originally intended to destroy it, only disable power and communications. In attempting to disable the power supply, it destabilized and caused a core detonation that destroyed almost the entire colony and killed a large majority of the inhabitants. The attackers looted what they wanted and the survivors were then left with little to no medical care or supplies. Kalli Thorn was found to be leading a group of 32 children. She had been feeding and protecting them. Collective interviews from the children determined that Kalli had saved some of them. The few who were old enough to recall the time, reported that there had been violence and abuse as many of the adults began to become more desperate. It was described as general lawlessness and even some accounts of cannibalism that killed off most of the initial group that had tried to band together. Although it is not entirely clear, Kalli may have even killed some of her fellow colonists in an effort to protect some of the children. Most of the children were too traumatized to give clear accounts, or never saw enough to give verifiable facts. When questioned about these reports, Kalli denied killing specific individuals or avoided answering entirely. There is speculation that although it would be quite understandable that certain violent action might be required for survival, she either found the events to be too traumatic or may have even deliberately elected to leave such facts undefined as a means of putting it behind her. Of the adults that were rescued, most were secured in a bunker, but those that were still roaming freely, they stated that it had become well known that the area of wilderness where the children were recovered was not to be travelled, as it was too dangerous. When the rescue team searched this wilderness area, no hostile forces were found, but their first contact with the survivors in the area was Kalli armed with a bow and other small hand held improvised weapons. The team reported that they could only detect her through use of tricorder readings and had to convince her to reveal herself and then lead her to those in her care. The children were secured deep in a complex network of natural caves. They had been living off of wild game that Kalli had been providing and they were a well organized small community, in amazingly good condition for the circumstances. Follow-up request for further interviews were refused by Kalli and the group could see nothing further to be gained by continuing to pursue the matter with her. END REPORT

Kalli was only 15, but had no other known family, so she was brought to the Sol system, where she was placed into the foster care system. She was moved around to several different temporary homes until she placed a call to local security about an accusation of assault, but upon investigation, she had fled and the residents claimed no knowledge of any assault. Her location then remained unknown until she appeared for free testing at public school, where she was seeking acceptance to Star Fleet Academy. Her scores were impressive enough to gain her admittance and probationary placement, proving to be an ideal student.

She graduated from the Academy with honors and letters of high recommendation. During her first assignment, she has been performing brilliantly in her daily duties. During the recent fleet battle against the Borg, the ship was boarded and it was her quick thinking that may have saved the entire ship and crew. The Borg had taken control of the Secondary Computer Core and was attempting to kill all crew. Kalli managed to make her way to accessing the Computer Override Controls, isolating the core and returning control of the ship to the crew. As a direct result of her outstanding performance, she was promoted to the rank of Ensign.
