Personal History

Tala Thane was born on Deep Space K-7 just outside the Klingon borders. Daughter of a Halanan ambassador and a Klingon engineer, her early years were spent with her mother traveling with her assigned ship or left on various space stations. Her father had killed himself before she was born, committing the ritual suicide when Bola rejected him after mating.

With no father and a largely absent mother, Tala found herself more often than not alone. Her size and half-breed status made her an easy target for other Klingon children, so she retreated into the world of books and knowledge, much to the dismay of her mother. Frequent beatings did nothing to make Tala any more the warrior her mother dreamed of, but was the catalyst for her running away at the age of 12.

Having stowed aboard an Enolian ship when docked at a space station, Tala gained her freedom from what she saw as oppressive Klingon culture. She befriended the captain of the ship, Prthh, who she imagined as a second father. Prthh used Tala as a spy to gain advantage over his competition when docked, and in return provided her with food, lodging and educational material.

Fearing the same fate as her father, Tala avoided close relationships with men, and decided the rough and rowdy life in trading was too dangerous after her protector, Captain Prthh, was accused of smuggling by a competitor and subsequently imprisoned.

Tala made her way to the nearest space station at the age of 18, where she met Bajoran Vedics and returned to Bajor to study with them. While on Bajor, she found herself unable to reconcile herself with Bajorian faith, and eventually left the monastic life for an academic life.

At age 25 she traveled to Earth to study, and became interested in marine invertebrates. After receiving her Masters Degree in Marine Biology, she began to become dissatisfied with life without the frequent space travel she had become accustomed to, and enrolled in Star Fleet Academy.

Because Tala is uncertain whether her Halanan blood will result in biological bonding should she mate, she has avoided close or romantic relationships with men. She attempts to keep a strong hold on her emotions, since she is wary of her psycho-projective self, which reflects all of the Klingon characteristics her mother would have been proud of.
