Terra Nova is an inhabited M-class planet located less than twenty light years from the Sol system. It has two moons.

The founding of the Terra Nova colony

Native species include a burrowing animal referred to as a "Digger," and several flying animals.

This was the site of the first Human colony outside of the Sol system, established in 2078. Inhabitants there later became known as "Novans."

Called "The Great Experiment" by many back on Earth, Terra Nova started with approximately 200 colonists. It took the colonists nine years to reach Terra Nova from Earth, flying in a ship designed to be deconstructed upon landing, for the use of setting up housing. When the decision was made to send more colonists, the founding colonists resisted. Threatening violence towards any newcomers, Terra Nova cut off all communications with Earth. As a result, no new ships were sent.

In 2151, an away team from Enterprise, NX-01 found the remains of the original colony. It was irradiated, and the Enterprise decided that the colony had been destroyed by an asteroid storm. However, children of the colonists had survived, having taken cover in underground caves. It was revealed that the original colonists believed Earth had attacked them, and told their children as such. Still mistrustful, the Novans held the Enterprise's away team hostage. The team was able to convince the Novans that Earth had not attacked the colony, and later helped them relocate to a spot on the planet that had been unaffected by the asteroids and subsequent radiation.

The colony was admitted into the United Federation of Planets in 2178. With support from the Federation, Terra Nova blossomed, becoming a trading hub for the Federation.

By 2378, the entire planet was known as Terra Nova, had a population of more than 347,000, and was governed from the capital of Logan City.
