Details—Item By Item

See below for notes about significant items of the sidebar of biographies.

Character Type

|Character Type=PRC This item is required.
 • For player characters, keep PC, as illustrated, above. For alternate player characters, which are also player characters, replace “PC” with Alt. For all non-player characters, replace “PC” with NPC.
 • Note, however, that |Character Type= plays an important role in linking biographies to roster categories and defaults to “NPC” if it includes neither PC nor Alt.

Join Date

|JoinY=215 These items are required for active player characters.
|JoinM=09
|JoinD=01
 • Simply replace “215,” “09,” and “01” with the appropriate parts of the actual Stardate, in Federation Space format, according to the best recollection of events. “JoinY,” as illustrated above, is a three-digit code. In the example, above, the year 2015 becomes 215. “JoinM,” as illustrated above, is a two-digit code. Remember to include a leading zero for January through September. “JoinD,” as illustrated above, is a two-digit code. Again, remember to include a leading zero for the first of the month to the ninth of the month. Also, remember to include a following zero for the tenth, twentieth, and thirtieth of the month.
 • Note that the year, month, and day parts of the “Join Date” combine to form a Stardate, in Federation Space format. It plays an important role in granting to player characters and alternate player characters a record of their seniority until retired; that is, their longevity medal. Non-player characters do not earn longevity medals.

Retired

|Retired= This item is required for retired characters or for player characters of inactive players.
 • For active characters, leave “Retired” blank, as illustrated, above. For retired characters, include text.
 • If necessary, a brief note may be included for retired characters, otherwise include simple text, such as |Retired=X, |Retired=Yes, or |Retired=21509.01.

Name

|Name=Character's Name This item is required.
 • Note that the character’s actual name must replace “Character’s Name.”
 • To avoid display errors because of color, do not include double square brackets along with the name.

Affiliation

|Affiliation=United Federation of Planets
 • Note that “United Federation of Planets” here actually determines both the sidebar headers’ color and the text of the “Affiliation” information box, and should reflect the character’s affiliation—not the character’s species—and the appropriate one of the following should replace it:
See Template:Color for a list of actual affiliation names.
 • To avoid display errors because of double square brackets, do not include double square brackets along with the affiliation. To avoid display errors because of color, try this: Leave “United Federation of Planets” blank, like this: |Affiliation=, for a neutral color.
 • For neutral or unaffiliated characters, leave “United Federation of Planets” blank, like this: |Affiliation=.

Character Image

|Image=File Name.png This item is optional and should visually represent the character.
 • Upload the image file.
 • Note that the file’s actual name must replace “File Name,” and that the file’s actual extension must replace “.png.” Accepted image file formats include .jpg, .jpeg, .png, and .gif.
 • To avoid display errors because of missing images, try one of three things: (1) Check that the image file is uploaded. (2) Check the file name for correct spelling that matches the actual file name, including the file extension. (3) Ensure that the |Image= line is included only once in the biography and that it is not blank.

Position(s)

|Position=Chief Science Officer This item is required.
|Position2=Second Officer Only use this item if it is applicable.
 • Note that the character’s actual position must replace “Chief Science Officer.” Examples of positions include Tactical Officer, Commanding Officer, and Commander in Chief, etc. To avoid display errors because of double square brackets, do not include double square brackets along with the position. To avoid display errors because of a broken wiki link, try one of three things: (1) Check the position for correct spelling. (2) Search the wiki for the same position but with a different name to discover the appropriate name to use. (3) Create a wiki page with the same name as the position. However, see the next point.
 • However, note that “Position” plays an important role in linking biographies to roster categories. Therefore, “Acting” positions must display as “Acting...” but must link to the root position. Use to produce both the appropriate “Acting...” text and the root position link. For example: Chief EngineerActing Chief Engineer, First OfficerActing First Officer, etc.
 • For |Position2=, note that the character’s actual in context second position must replace “Second Officer.” However, examples of out of context positions include Content Manager, Creative Director, and Game Moderator, etc.

Assignment

|Assignment=USS Yeager, FSC-28018 This item is required.
 • For starship assignments, replace “Yeager” with the character starship’s actual name, replace “FSC” with the character starship’s actual prefix, and replace “28018” with the character starship’s actual suffix. Examples of other starship assignments include IKV Dreamslayer and RIS Shadowhawk.
 • For other assignments for which a wiki page exists, replace “USS Yeager, FSC-28018” with the page name. Examples of such assignments include Area 42, Star Base Alpha, and Star Fleet Academy, etc. To avoid display errors because of double square brackets, do not include double square brackets along with the assignment. To avoid display errors because of a broken wiki link, try one of three things: (1) Check the assignment for correct spelling. (2) Search the wiki for the same assignment but with a different name to discover the appropriate name to use. (3) Create a wiki page with the same name as the assignment.
 • Note that |Assignment= plays an important role in linking biographies to roster categories. Therefore, do not remove it, leave it blank, or use the USS or similar template with it, and include full text for starship assignments, as illustrated, above. However, compare the “Assignment Text” heading, below.

Assignment Text

|AssignmentText= This item is optional.
 • Use this item to provide a more descriptive or a more visually appropriate assignment. Consider the following example:
|Assignment=USS Yeager, FSC-28018
|AssignmentText=Yeager
 • In the example, above, “USS Yeager, FSC-28018,” properly italicized, as provided by |AssignmentText=Yeager, replaces “USS Yeager, FSC-28018,” as provided by |Assignment=USS Yeager, FSC-28018, in the “Assignment” information box of the sidebar of the biography. WARNING: “AssignmentText” only replaces text and does not replace the other important functions of “Assignment.” To avoid errors because of missing links to roster categories, do not remove |Assignment=Assignment, do not leave it blank, and do not include the USS or similar template with it. See the “Assignment” heading, above.

Rank

|Rank=Ensign This item is required.
 • Note that the character’s actual rank must replace “Ensign.” To avoid display errors because of double square brackets, do not include double square brackets along with the rank. To avoid display errors because of missing rank images, use the actual wiki rank name—not necessarily the rank’s proper name, and do not include additional text along with “Rank.”
Compare Template:EventImage’s list of actual wiki rank names by department.

Era

|Era= This item is required for historical rank images; it retrieves rank images from the appropriate historical department.
 • For current characters, leave “Era” blank, as illustrated, above. For historical characters, include “Ent,” like this: |Era=Ent.

Department

|Department=Science This item is required for rank images; it retrieves rank images from the appropriate department.
 • Note that the character’s actual department must replace “Science.” Examples of departments include Marine, Medical, and Support. To avoid display errors because of missing or incorrect rank images, enter the correct wiki rank in |Rank=Rank and the correct wiki department in |Department=Department. EXCEPTION: Remove “Ent” for historical departments; use Command, MACO, Operations, and Sciences—“Sciences,” with an “s”—all without the “Ent” prefix. For example, use Command instead of Ent-Command for the historical department name. However, see the “Era” heading, above.
Compare Template:EventImage’s list of actual wiki rank names by department, but remember the exception, above.

Played By

|Played= This item is required for alternate player characters and non-player characters.
 • For alternate player characters and non-player characters, include the owning player character’s name here, preferably the actual page name in double square brackets. For example: |Played=Dys, Gloria or even |Played=Gloria Dys. To avoid display errors because of a broken wiki link, include the actual page name in double square brackets. However, leave “Played” blank, as illustrated, above, for root player characters.

Species

|Species=Human This item is required.
|Species2= “Species” items two to six are optional, depending on the nature of the character.
|Species3=
|Species4=
|Species5=
|Species6=
|Species Count= This item is optional and should be left blank, generally.
|Sperc1= “Sperc,” or species percentage, items are required only for characters with uneven species mixes.
|Sperc2=
|Sperc3=
|Sperc4=
|Sperc5=
|Sperc6=
 • Note that the character’s actual species must replace “Human” in |Species=Human. For single species characters, simply replace “Human” with the character’s actual species.
 • For multiple species characters with an even mix of two to six species, simply include the species names in the appropriate number of the six “Species” items. Note that |Species Count= is optional and should be left blank, generally. It functions redundantly only to limit the number of species between two and six. Consider the following example:
|Species=Vulcan
|Species2=Human
 • In the example, above, the biography sidebar automatically displays “1/2 Vulcan, 1/2 Human,” an even mix of the two species. The same rule applies to a greater number of species up to a maximum of six.
 • For multiple species characters with an uneven mix of two to six species, simply include the species names in the appropriate number of the six “Species” items, and include the fraction of each mix in the corresponding number of the six “Sperc” items. Again, note that |Species Count= is optional and should be left blank, generally. It functions redundantly only to limit the number of species between two and six. Consider the following example:
|Species=Vulcan
|Species2=Romulan
|Sperc1=2/3
|Sperc2=1/3
 • In the example, above, the biography sidebar displays the included figures “2/3 Vulcan, 1/3 Romulan,” an uneven mix of the two species. The same rule applies to a greater number of species up to a maximum of six. To avoid display errors with an uneven mix of two to six species because of double square brackets, include a “Sperc” item for each “Species” item used, and ensure that they correspond to each other. For example, use “Sperc1” for “Species,” “Sperc2” for “Species2” and “Sperc3” for “Species3,” etc.

Height

Use only one of the following items:

|Height=183 Use this item if the character’s height in centimeters is known.
 • Note that the character’s actual height in centimeters must replace “183.”
|Height=6 Use this item if the character’s height in feet and inches is known.
 • This template will convert feet and inches into centimeters. Note that the character’s actual height in feet must replace “6” and the remainder of the character’s actual height in inches must replace “0.”

Weight

Use only one of the following items:

|Weight=88 Use this item if the character’s weight in kilograms is known.
 • This template will convert kilograms into pounds and display both kilograms and pounds. Note that the character’s actual weight in kilograms must replace “88.”
|Weight=194 Use this item if the character’s weight in pounds is known.
 • This template will convert pounds into kilograms and display both kilograms and pounds. Note that the character’s actual weight in pounds must replace “194.”

Homeworld

|Homeworld=Earth This item is optional, if the character’s place of birth is known. Compare the “Place of Birth” heading, below.
 • Note that the character’s actual homeworld must replace “Earth.”
 • For homeworlds for which a wiki page exists, replace “Earth” with the page name inside double square brackets to provide a wiki link to the appropriate page. Examples of such homeworlds include Betazed, Nasat, and Vulcan. To avoid display errors because of a broken wiki link, try one of three things: (1) Check the homeworld for correct spelling. (2) Search the wiki for the same homeworld but with a different name to discover the appropriate name to use. (3) Create a wiki page with the same name as the homeworld.
 • For homeworlds for which a wiki page does not and will not exist, replace “Earth” with the name of the homeworld, but without double square brackets, to prevent a broken wiki link.

Place of Birth

|Place=City, Division, Region, etc. This item is optional, if the character’s homeworld is known.
 • Note that the character’s actual place of birth must replace “City, Division, Region, etc.” However, see the “Homeworld” heading, above, to include the character’s homeworld.

Date of Birth and Age

|Dateyr=185 These items are required.
|Datemth=09
|Dateday=01
|Age= This item is optional.
 • Simply replace “185,” “09,” and “01” with the appropriate parts of the actual Stardate, in Federation Space format, according to the best recollection of events. “Dateyr,” as illustrated above, is a three-digit code. In the example, above, the year 2385 becomes 185. “Datemth,” as illustrated above, is a two-digit code. Remember to include a leading zero for January through September. “Dateday,” as illustrated above, is a two-digit code. Again, remember to include a leading zero for the first of the month to the ninth of the month. Also, remember to include a following zero for the tenth, twentieth, and thirtieth of the month.
 • Note that the year, month, and day parts of the “Date of Birth” combine to form a Stardate, in Federation Space format.
 • Leave “Age” blank, as illustrated, above, to automatically age the character according to the passing of real time. To override the automatic aging process and manually control the age, include the desired age, like this: |Age=29. (See also Character Aging Guidelines.)

Family Image

|Image2=File Name.png This item is optional.
(3) Ensure that the |Image2= line is included only once in the biography and that it is not blank.

Tips

The following tips may be helpful in specific situations to enhance the display of the sidebar of a character’s biography.

Break

<br> Use this to include multiple lines of text within plain text, if necessary.
 • For example, to display the names “Johannes Schwicker” and “Klingon; Ail, son of Arag” on two lines of text, include a break, like this: |Name=Johannes Schwicker<br>Klingon; Ail, son of Arag. However, to prevent display errors because of double square brackets, do not include a break within text transclusions, links, or redirects, such as double square brackets.

Non-Breaking Hyphen and Space

&#8209; Use this to include a non-breaking hyphen within plain text, if necessary.
&nbsp; Use this to include a non-breaking space within plain text, if necessary.
 • For example, to prevent unexpected line breaking or word wrapping of the serial number “GR‑279‑8899 BCN,” include non-breaking hyphens and a non-breaking space, like this: GR&#8209;279&#8209;8899&nbsp;BCN. However, to prevent display errors because of a database error message, do not include a non-breaking hyphen or space within text transclusions, links, or redirects, such as double square brackets.

Single Pipe Mark

Use this to include a single pipe mark within text transclusions, links, or redirects, such as double square brackets.
 • For example, to include the species “Ferengi” and “Human” within a text transclusion but to display “Ferengi (Paternal)” and “Human (Maternal),” include a single pipe mark, like this:
|Species=FerengiFerengi (Paternal)
|Species2=HumanHuman (Maternal)
