Personal History
Born to a Star Fleet prisoner of war who was taken as a concubine by Vaelrith Tei, his father. 2 years later his mother was shot trying to escape from Romulus. His father tried to keep this information from Vaebn; but at the age of 12 he found out from a household servant, who had been a friend to Vaebn for years, this planted a seed of hatred in Vaebn for the Romulan people.
For the next 5 years thoughts of revenge and escape consumed his every waking moment. At the age of 17, during his first month of training at the Romulan Naval Academy, his chance finally came. A flight training exercise was planned for his training group using antiquated shuttles that dated back to before the Romulan-Federation war 30 years ago. He smuggled a disrupter onto his shuttle and half way through the trip shot his Instructor and copilot. Exhilaration flooded through his being as he cloaked the shuttle and set course for the Federation boarder. During the long trip, since the shuttle was only capable of warp 4.75, he decided to find his mother's family and hoped they would accept him. After the excitement of his escape and the joy at finally being free disappointment hounded his every move. He searched from Risa to Bajor to Earth and everywhere in between, yet could find no trace of the Karith family.
After a short stint as a pilot in the minor class shuttle racing circuit, he decided he needed to do something with the rest of his life. It had been nearly two years since his escape from Romulus, and he had nothing except for his stolen shuttle, and his own despair from not being able to find his family. With nowhere else to turn he applied to Star Fleet Academy, a month later when a message arrived saying he was accepted into the academy he was overjoyed; an hour later he had thrown the few things he owned into the cargo bay of his shuttle and set course for Earth. It was tough getting used to life at the Academy, he'd been used to just doing whatever he wanted to do, but now he had to follow the orders of others. Eventually he learned to deal with it, and managed to make it through his time at the Academy without any problem. He served with distinction aboard the USS Titan where he was eventually promoted to First Officer.
After several missions, most of the Titan’s command crew was transferred to the USS Comet, where Tei was promoted to the rank of Captain, though he continued to serve as the Comet’s First Officer.
Tei’s Star Fleet career took a downward turn during a mission to Romulan space; a group of reformists had managed to capture a planet and had proceeded to ask the Federation for assistance. Though hesitant, Star Fleet sent the Comet to respond to the reformist’s plea. After weeks of interaction with the reformists, learning about their cause and their way of life, Tei did what he felt was necessary and turned his back on Star Fleet. For months he ran missions with the Reformist movement’s military, striking at Empire supply depots and shipping convoys; during his last mission for the Reformists Tei was piloting a one-man scout, attempting to verify rumors of a fleet buildup near Federation territory. The rumors turned out to be nothing more than a Tal’Shiar ruse and Tei was ambushed. His ship was destroyed and Tei was left for dead, drifting in a barely functioning life pod. After days of drifting, he finally managed to get the pod’s distress beacon working, and shortly thereafter a Star Fleet ship, the USS De Soto, detected the signal and rescued him. Tei’s relief at being rescued was short-lived, as soon as the De Soto's captain identified him as a deserter, Tei was placed under arrest and taken to Starbase Bravo where he was found guilty in a general court martial and sentenced to 10 years in a Federation Penal Colony. Recently, Vaebn Tei was released from prison and was recommissioned with the rank of Lieutenant Commander, pending successful completion of an undisclosed mission.
Personality Profile
Academy Major(s): Advanced Starship Tactics and Maneuvers
Academy Minor(s): Field Medicine, Security Measures
Hobbies and Pastimes: Racing and maintaining his shuttle, the Ael'aehallh
Short-Term Goals: To come to terms with the person he's become as well as adjust to once again being in Star Fleet
Long-Term Goals: To locate his mother’s family and tell them what happened to her
Personality: To strangers, Tei presents himself has arrogant and cocky. To his friends he’s laid back and caring
Sense of Humor: Tei favors a sarcastic sense of humor although he isn’t above telling a corny joke from time to time
Phobias: Though strange for a pilot, Tei is terrified of heights. When he’s in a cockpit he feels totally in control of his own fate but when he’s standing on a cliff or on the top of a tall building he knows that all it would only take a gentle shove to make him lose his balance and plummet to his death
Likes: Relaxing in a holodeck recreation of a beach, spending time working on and flying his shuttle, and reading reports on any new and innovative starship tactics
Dislikes: Spicy food, junior officers who think they're the greatest thing to hit the fleet since the phaser, and his father
Pet Peeves or Gripes: People who leave their quarters a mess
Achievements: Attaining the rank of Captain (though he was never in command of a ship)
Disappointments: That he was never able to get to know his mother is his greatest disappointment
Illnesses: Most of the usual Romulan childhood illnesses ranging from the Rihanha flu to Nei’rrh pox
Strengths: Able to project the course of a battle several maneuvers ahead of the current situation
Weaknesses: Vaebn tends to float in and out of bouts of self-doubt
Prejudices: Romulans of course; Tei is unable to trust them due to his experiences when he was younger
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Tei prefers simple t-shirts and cargo pants when he’s off-duty…though that occurrence is rare
Distinguishing Features: None save for the fact that his mixed heritage makes him appear more Vulcan than Romulan
Pets: None
Friends: The closest thing Vaebn had to a best friend was Commander Avark prior to the Klingon's death
Personal Paradigm Shifts
Most Painful Experience: Watching his childhood friend T’Manda die in his arms soon after he had rescued her from the Tal’Shiar and brought her to the Federation
Best Time: The best times in Vaebn’s life were spent on his father’s estate on Romulus. There he would play with his friends day in and day out, all under the watchful eye of the various servants and groundskeepers. The good times ended when he discovered the truth about his mother
Most Crucial Experience: The most crucial experience of Tei’s life was escaping from the life, and people, he’d grown to despise in the Star Empire
Role Model: Because of his loathing for his father and his youth spent wandering the stars, Vaebn has no true role models. He looks at the universe through the lens of his own code of morals
