The targ is a herding animal native to Qo'noS, the Klingon homeworld. The animal is comparable to an Earth boar, but has spikes on its back. Coloring is usually dark brown, though some targ have spotted markings. Targs are generally regarded as "vicious and destructive" animals. Klingons keep domesticated targs as pets and livestock, and hunt wild targs for sport. The Hamar Mountains have known to be abundant with targ herds. When feeling threatened or over-heated, the animal has been observed to hide in dirt.

Husbandry Uses

  • The meat and heart of the targ can be used for food, and is rich in protein.
  • Targs produce milk, which can be used as an ingredient in beverages.
  • Certain varieties of gagh are packed in targ blood.

Ceremonial Uses

  • Shoulder fat is used to make ceremonial Klingon wedding candles, called var'Hama candles.
  • Some Klingon wedding ceremonies involve the ritual sacrifice of a targ.
  • As part of the Day of Honor ceremony, the participant had to eat from the heart of a sanctified targ.

Fun Facts

  • Targ herds can be a hazard on Qo'noS; Klingon ground assault vehicles use a scoop or plow to clear the animals away from their path.
  • The phrase "targ manure" has been used as slang to describe a lie, or a made up story. (Clearly closely related to the Human phrase, "bull shit.")
  • "Toby the Targ" was a popular children's character, and had a series of children's works.
