Personal History

On a hot summer day in June, outside Charlotte, North Carolina, Michael Ryan Tanner was born to Reilly and Dayton Tanner. Tanner's family has always been about racing. Growing up in Kannapolis, he learned about people like Dale Earnhardt, Glen Wood, and Jeff Gordon. He grew up around speed and loved it. When he was growing up, he would go to the local short track on the weekends and watch the drivers go around and around. Despite the time that had passed, not much had changed here. People did it for the love of racing, not for a paycheck. Tanner loved it there. Even as a boy, he spent hours trying to drive anything and everything he could, from children's bicycles and trikes to go carts and, of course, his parents' shuttle when he turned 16.

Growing up, racing was not just a passing hobby for Tanner. His parents both worked in the racing field with his Dad working as a scout for the Haas-Hendrick Formula Zero team. Tanner knew that one day, if he practiced hard enough, he could impress his Dad and get a shot in a real Formula Zero shuttle. And so, Tanner drove and drove. Dayton helped his son with the cars when he was younger, transitioning into his crew and car chief as Tanner grew older. Reilly helped market their small team, getting the sponsorship they needed to keep Mike in the car. His best friend, Dale McSwain, became his spotter and helped Mike sharpen his skills. As time went on, Tanner raced at higher and higher levels until he found himself in a Haas-Hendrick developmental craft, testing for a possible spot on the league just under Formula Zero, the Formula Strats.

Clinching the spot, Tanner went on to do the unthinkable and, with his team at his side, won the Formula Strat championship in his rookie year. Suddenly, the little kid had become big time and some big names were beginning to take notice. Tanner, though, knew he needed more time to get acquainted with these bigger crafts and chose to stay in the Strats for the next few seasons. This decision would save his life.

Around 4 years ago, Bajor was completely annihilated by the Krynar. Absolutely nothing remained of the planet or it’s inhabitants. The fleet protecting the planet had also been decimated, along with several refuge vessels that tried to escape the warzone. Tanner’s Mom and Dad had been aboard one of those vessels, as they had been on Bajor to look at a possible new driver. Tanner, was changed that day, and fell into a deep depression. He often relied on his parents and their scheduling on how he lived his life and found that he never had great skills to plan on his own. He bounced around from track to track, never really reaching the same level of success he did before. Finally, McSwain caught up to him and told him to join Star Fleet. Dale hoped that Mike would learn the discipline he was missing and be able to come back one day and race again.

Going through training, Mike began to reflect his former self and left his depression behind. And with that, he also found himself back in the groove when it came to flying. Although his days as a professional look to be over, he hopes that he can, one day, return to the sport he loves and help a young driver like himself into stardom.
