Personal History

Before the outbreak of any formal declaration of hostilities in the First General War, the Cardassians raided many of the outlying Bajoran colonies in neighboring start systems; the Cardassians were able to take many Bajoran comfort women and men and had children with their captors. Much speculation has been placed on whether or not these comfort people fought their Cardassian / Dominion overlords or perhaps they were more willing participants than they have led others to believe. A few years before the official start of the First General War the Cardassians lead a rather bold raid on an Archeological dig and captured a joint Bajoran / Vulcan team that were investigating the ruins on Netara V, a Bajoran world close to the Cardassian boarder. The Cardassian realized that the Vulcans might pose a problem for them, and they felt that it was in their best interests to try and gain favor with one of the founding members of the Federation by returning the Vulcan team members. It is common knowledge that the Vulcans hold great influence over other members of the Federation. However, the Cardassians separated the Bajoran and Vulcan team members, as far as the Vulcan team member knew and as far as they reported they had been lead to believe that the Bajoran Archeologists had been returned to Bajor and as the dig was completed when the Cardassians had raided, the Vulcans felt no attempt was needed to confirm that the Bajorans had in fact been returned.

That is what was generally believe to be the case, but the Cardassians had been convinced that the Bajorans in fact were on Netara V to set up a combination listening post and research center for advanced biological weapons research. One of the Bajoran Archeologists was a lovely woman named Nar Opaka. She was a young woman, with long dark brown hair and dark blue eyes that glow. She is charming, witty and well read. She has a very ordered mind and she loves to dance. She had graduated from the Daystrom Institute six years earlier with several advanced degrees including Advanced Warp Theory, Biology, Stellar Cartography and History, but her first love had always been Archeology. Even as a young girl on Bajor she had enjoyed visiting the ruins of B'Hala and imagined what life must have been like on Bajor over 30,000 years ago. She was excited and honored to be leading the Archeological team; she knew it would be dangerous as Netara V was in close proximity to Cardassian space.

After the Cardassians had separated the Vulcans from the Bajoran team members they shipped them to the Dilithium mines on Dentara V. Nar’s mother was in fact one of these comfort women, though not by choice. A Cardassian Gul took a liking to her At first Nar’s mother resisted the Cardassians, but that proved to be more difficult than expected. She knew if she ever expected to see Bajor or her family again she had to survive, even if it meant being violated and defiled by a Cardassian. Gul Tain the camps Second–in–Command took a liking to Nar’s mother the lovely Nar Opaka and convinced the Gul in charge that he decided to take her as his servant and had her taken out of the Dilithium mines and into his home. Gul Tain was a kind and gentle man, unless you crossed him and he could be violet almost savage in his dealings with his enemies. Gul Tain was a rather large Cardassian in both height and weight, but very handsome none the less. He was a Cardassian who commanded respect just by walking into a room. He was charming, cleaver and well educated. The best way one could describe Nar Ren Tain’s father was that he had an almost magical presence to him. It is believed that he came from a wealthy family on Cardassia Prime. He grew up with wealth and privilege and it was a surprise to his family when he decided to join the military. During her first few months in this Cardassians home Nar Opaka felt she had to do whatever was necessary to survive, but gradually her attitude started to change. Nar Opaka found herself falling in love with him. Nar Opaka never hide her feelings about Cardassians considering that Cardassian forces pirated many of Bajor's artistic and cultural treasures, including several of their sacred Orbs (or Tears of the Prophets), but never the less she had fallen in love with a man that the rest of her world would consider evil. Gul Tain in fact loved her very much. He was fascinated by her; she was not like the Cardassian women, ruthless and scheming willing to do or say anything to advance their careers. She was different than any women he had ever met. She was honest and opinionated, but caring and giving. Nar Opaka spoke her mind and was kind and caring towards him. They would spend hours talking about science, art, literature and many other things. Here were two kindred spirits who all though different species, who had fallen in love.

To hide the shame of their indiscretions from their families back on Cardassia, the Cardassians decided that it was better to work their Bajoran children and families to death in a labor camp on Dentara V as opposed to blatantly kill their off spring outright. However, for Nar growing up in a Cardassian labor camp on the far side of Cardassian space was far from idyllic and being half Bajoran and half Cardassian meant that at any given moment only half the people in your world could hate you at once. However, being the son of the camps second in command did have its advantages. Nar was educated and lived in conditions far better than most in the camp, but due to his light skin coloring and more subdued ridged arches on his neck and face he stood out as not being pure Cardassian. He was not accepted as either Cardassian or Bajoran. When assigned to work with the Bajoran prisoners they often treated him with violence cruelty and often called his mother a whore. Many times Nar would return home with cuts and bruises and he would lie to his father and say that he had been injured while working. Gul Tain took great pride in his children especially his eldest son. Nar was afraid that if his father knew the truth that he would punish the other Bajorans, or worse kill them. Nar in fact had witnessed many terrible things happen in the camp, whole barracks of up to one-hundred and fifty works killed for not meeting their quota in the mines. He witnessed many unnecessary medical experiments on Bajoran prisoners, which did nothing to advance medical knowledge at all. Nar had witnessed many overzealous Guls’ swagger and bluster about their own greatness and how they would bring glory and honor to Cardassia, when in fact the Cardassians were nothing more than puppets of the Dominion and the Jem'Hadar. There were no set of rules that you could follow and know that you would be safe. At any moment a Gil, Glinn or a Gul could decide that you are a burden and are not pulling your weight and kill you on the spot. Perhaps what cemented Nar’s hatred for the Cardassians more than anything else was one day when he was about twelve years old he had been assigned to a repair crew to help fix the ventilation system for the camp hospital. The voles had done a great deal of damage to the environmental and power distribution systems. Nar was inside the duct work, inside the nursery. When he witnessed a drunken Gul burst into the nursery and Nar saw him place three small Bajoran / Cardassian children and a new born into a vacuum chamber and he removed all the air slowly, taking great pride, as the children slowly suffocated. When a doctor on duty came in he just looked and asked why had the Gul done such a thing and the Gul had replied in such an icy and heartless manner, “Cardassia does not need such filth and vermin in our genome. Killing them is our duty.” The doctor never reported this Gul and the Gul was never punished, not even a reprimand was placed in his service record.

Nar can never forget the look on the children faces as they tried to gasp for breath. Nar watched helplessly as the children started to bang on the vacuum chamber. There small faces pressed against the glass, calling for someone to help them. That’s when Nar noticed that the smallest child with the dark green eyes and the light gray tunic was his baby brother, Ventil. Nar watched powerless to help these kids, he had to watch as the children’s lips turned blue and suffocate, as Ventil’s small limp body started to drop to the floor of the vacuum chamber Nar let out a scream, but it was drown out the rumble of the environmental controls kick back to life, just as his brother’s life was slipping away. What made matters worse for Nar was how was he going to explain to his mother that he had to watch his younger brother suffocate and die at the hands of his fathers’ people?

During the First General War the camp at Dentara V was liberated and many Bajorans including Nar his mother and his two sisters made their way back to Bajor. Nar and his family have been living on Bajor VIII ever since. After, the end of the four year war and the Cardassians were pushed back to their pre-war boarder many Bajorans’ had simple disappeared colonies, freighter crews and transports had disappeared without a trace. The Bajoran Government claims it is still looking into the status of these missing children of Bajor. The Cardassian government denies any knowledge of these missing Bajorans and those Bajorans that had been liberated often tell conflicting stories about who was a prisoner and who had been a collaborator.

On Star date 21104.27, while on the Auxiliary Bridge Nar suffered a severe injury that left him in a comma for two months and extensive therapy following his comma. It was a rather traumatic event when you consider what had happened, the Captain had ordered that the Battle Bridge be manned as he was taking the ship in to battle while the main saucer section went on a rescue mission. In the heat of battle an enemy shot over loaded the E.P.S. Conduits, causing the entire E.P.S. system to over load and as luck would have it Nar had caught the brunt of the explosion, sending chunks if metal into Nar's face and neck. In an odd way Nar had actually saved several of the others on the bridge, when the Security Console exploded, his massive frame caught most of the damage, thus saving many of those around him. It was a sensation that Nar would never forget, it was as if he went into slow motion, the Security Station erupted into a shower of sparks, as if a star exploded into a small confined area, small chunks of metal, plastic and glass, ripping his skin. Then the blood, Nar felt a warm wet feeling running down his neck and into his uniform. Then as if someone had spun him around, he felt his head go light and he passed out, his world went black. The last image, he could recall clearly was the image of his beloved Adami standing over him crying.

However, due to Nar's unique biology the medical staff didn't feel confident in treating the Cardassian / Bajoran Hybrid. It was decided that they would stabilize him and then place him into stasis, until they could reach a Star base and get Nar the proper medical attention. During his recovery, Nar had a great deal of time to think. He had accepted a transfer into Security, while he was confident and capable and clearly could perform the duties of a Star Fleet Security Officer. He knew that had he been at the Helm, piloting the ship, he could have out maneuvered the enemy, thus avoiding and kind of damage to the ship, Nar was after all one of the best Tactical Officers in the fleet.

After, many hours of discussion and reflection Nar came to the conclusion that he would return to his root, he decided he would return to the Tactical Department, as he was a much better pilot than a Security Officer.
