Personal History

Oliver Jacob Swanson was born on a rainy day in Philadelphia. His childhood was fairly normal; he got fairly average grades in school, had a few good friends, and got into just enough trouble to give him a little character. His parents split when he was ten, and he moved back and forth between their houses for the next eight years. He had a pretty easy time with the divorce- his parents hadn't been getting along for a long time, and he was smart enough to expect that they'd break eventually. His sister didn't understand how he could take it so easy, and the difference between the two caused a permanent rift between them.

He had fun in his teens. He had a high aptitude for languages and sciences, and his grades in those areas were well above average. He came out to his family and friends when he met his first boyfriend, Ian, at 17. It was not an issue, they all had guessed before he told them. Under the bough of his supporting family and friends, Oliver was encouraged to study performing arts, and acted in school plays whenever he could. He learned several instruments, and when he completed school at eighteen, he took a job as a musician aboard a cruise ship.

The next couple of years were the most enjoyable, and the most dramatic, of Oliver's life. He had ample free time aboard ship, and he explored all facets of life- he dated a lot, found a new hobby in holo-photography, and became a skilled gymnast. While ship life was fun, by the time he was twenty he decided he had outlived the lifestyle, and finally disembarked for good in Rio de Janeiro. He worked as a waiter for a while in Rio, and hated it. In the few months that he had been land-bound, he had started to feel a craving for something more.

Restless, he had began to subsidize his appetite for life by being reckless. He drank, slept around, tried dangerous sports; anything so that he could feel like he was experiencing more. It was on one of these binges that he came to the realization that Star Fleet was where he belonged. Waking up next to a young engineering officer on shore leave, he saw the small silver and gold delta shield on the floor next to the bed, and a million things flashed through his mind. For the first time, he was sure where he wanted his future to go.
