Personal History

Celes grew up on a farm with her parents. It was a relatively happy childhood and she loved helping her father maintain the technology they used to run their livelihood.

A desire to learn prompted Celes to apply for Star Fleet academy and she was thrilled to be accepted. There however, she found that the machinery she had helped with at home was far simpler than that used by most of the Federation and Star Fleet in particular, and she struggled.

She lost touch with the rest of the academy intake for her year and ended up re-sitting a year before she finally began to grasp the concepts she needed. Even then Celes had to study constantly and no one was more surprised than she was when she finally graduated.

The loss of her home and family hit Celes hard, and what little respect or interest she'd had in the 'Prophets' turned to disgust. As far as she was concerned they were nothing more than an advanced species of wormhole aliens (as Star Fleet called them) who had used her people's naivety to make themselves worshipped, ignored them while they lived under years of Cardassian oppression and finally abandoned them when they needed them most, during the Krynar invasion.

Whilst serving on the USS Copernicus however, Surmak came face to face with the Prophets.

As the only member of the Bajoran race on board, she was chosen by the captain to represent her people and make a plea for the survival of her planet.

Existing outside Linear time, the wormhole aliens did not at first seem to Celes to understand her representations or consider them important, however it was gradually born in among the company that they considered it’s disappearance to be the merest blip in Bajor’s history… in fact they had and would move it through time. It was not destroyed and was brought back into space-time at the end of the Krynar war.

Celes was grateful to the Prophets, and finally had proof of their love for their adopted children, but she still had many doubts. She had also missed her home and her family and decided therefore to take an extended leave of absence on Bajor to reconnect with her roots.
