Supplemental Log - Lt. J.G. Nicholas Ristone, Chief of Security - Stardate 20802.01.

Begin Security Log:

Concerning the Olean Colony Incident:

When the Sheridan first responded to the distress call from the Olean Colony, under the leadership of Administer Stern, we did not realize we ourselves would undergo extreme distress.

I was new to Sheridan when the events happened, though my actions throughout the mission are what lead to my promotion to Chief of Security. The Colony appeared to be facing a crisis; an explosion at a waste and recycling plant had sent them into a poisonous nightmare where their atmosphere was made up of 35% chemical waste. First contact was made by Captain Dramar to Executive Johnson, who claimed that there were ‘many’ dead or injured.

Initial scans of the colony showed that around 150 of the 5000 colonist were dead. We arrived at the colony on Stardate 20704.10, and an away team beamed down to the planet. For information regarding planetary action please see Science and Medical reports.

It appeared that things were moving slowly at best, and that is before we hit a real snag. Apparently the toxins in the air caused a mutagen to form and spread. Due to the fact that the away team had not wore biosuites the returning members of the away team began to spread the contaminant across the Sheridan. To avoid a pandemic on board the ship was placed on quarantine. The first casualty for the Sheridan was Ensign Smythe, who worked in transporter rooms 1 and 2.

By this time several of the crew had become infected by the mutagen and it was imperative that a cure be found. By mistake I found myself on the bridge, in the midst of several infected people, becoming infected myself.

Eventually Captain Dramar, Commander Ralston, Administer Stern, and myself met in the Captain’s ready room. I was ordered to take a shuttle to the surface of the planet to retrieve Doctor Princip, the Sheridan’s CMO. By this time the inhabitants of the colony had begun rioting and became very hostile and violent. It was later determined that this was a direct effect of the contaminant.

Luckily my journey to the surface of the planet along with Midshipman James Wallace went by rather smoothly with little interference from the colonist. We returned to the Sheridan where the Doctor and myself returned to the Captain’s Ready Room. This is when things took a spin for the worse.

As stated earlier, the mutagens seemed to effect some peoples emotions, causing them to be more suspicious, angry, and even violent. It appeared that this was the case with both the Captain and Commander. For no apparent reason the Captain began to attack the Commander, and a rather large fight ensued. As the only security member present I of course stepped in to break up the fight, however, a well thrown plotted peace lily from the Captain left me with a large gash and concussion. After regaining consciousness a minute later I managed to get a shot off with my type I phaser, rendering the Captain unconscious.

Captain Dramar was taken to the brig and Commander Ralston and Doctor Princip assumed the roles of CO and FO. However, both men forgot to official relive Dramar of duty, thus all of his authorization codes still worked. He used a site-to-site transport and remained hidden for nearly an hour.

Eventually the Sheridan’s medical, science, and even engineering teams came up with a way to cure the mutagen. Unfortunately, it required them to flood the Sheridan with medicated water. It would take time for the water to do its work, and this is when the Captain made his reappearance.

The colonies Administer and his executives had been moved to a VIP quarters, and it was Dramar’s plan to assassinate these men. I arrived at the VIP quarters to find most of the executives unconscious on the floor, and Dramar looking more deranged than I had ever seen.

The next few moments found us in a hostile show down. The Captain wanting to kill Stern, Stern not trusting me or the Captain, and myself trying not to get shot or hit in the head by either men. Eventually the medicated water began to do its work, and an instant later the Administer and his associates were transported away from the danger that was on deck two. This just left the Captain and myself in a clear stare down. However, instead of an attack, the Captain passed out, requiring an emergency beam out for him and myself to sickbay.

Eventually I was reassigned to go back to the Colony, dressed as a civilian, to monitor the distribution of the cure. It went rather smoothly, though I fear the Federation will have a hard time regaining the trust of the colonies inhabitants.

A personal side note to any Chief of Security whose vessel meets up with the Olean Colony; while we did cure the contaminant, I fear that it still lives, possibly in the soil. The members of the Olean Colony did not contract the contaminant until it was in a much higher form due to the explosion, it is possible that they have an immunity from the lesser form of it, one that we might not have. While I have to scientific study into this, I do urge all security teams caution when dealing with this colony or it inhabitants. Keep a close eye on your crewmates as to avoid a similar situation.
