Personal History

Chaenai was born on the planet Orion as the youngest child in a family of three. Her parents had had only daughters, and this was seen as a good sign amongst her people, as they could be 'sold' on the slave market, allowing them to remain financially secure. This in turn enabled her and her sisters to be taught a wider variety of topics rather than just housework, cosmetics and Seduction 101.

However, shortly after she was born it was discovered she had a small genetic defect called albinism, resulting in a much lighter hair color than other Orion females. As the metaphorical blonde on a planet of brunettes, she was seen as exotic, and had her family been less wealthy she would have found herself contracted to another before she knew what the words meant.

Yet, things rarely go as planned, and such was the case for her as well. Chaenai was blessed with a good intelligence, and enjoyed solving riddles and puzzles since she was a child. When she learned of the slave trade, or more specifically what was to be her part in it, she could simply not come to like the future that was in store for her. Sure, her mother had had the same treatment as did many others, but that didn't make it right in her eyes.

She enjoyed working with technology, loved the challenge of finding a solution that did not involve 'tossing pheromones at it'. Hitting puberty around that time, the matter remained a touchy subject, leading to more than one shouting match in the house. And one day, her parents made one fatal mistake.

They told her to come up with something better.

Now faced with a challenge, she dived into the books, looking for a way that would enable her to carve out her own future while still satisfying her parents. After a few weeks of searching, she came to the conclusion that such a goal would have to be taking place away from Orion, and she hit a temporary impasse. The first suitors started to present themselves at her as well, yet she turned them all down, the idea of being stuck as a slave being too firmly imprinted in her mind to even consider accepting even if she wanted to.

In the end, it was Malaika, ironically enough the sister of one of her suitors that came up with a breakthrough. She was still in High School at the time, and the teachers were showing holovids of professions that they would be able to take for future studies. They had just watched a video for interplanetary trader when Malaika had poked her in the side, jokingly commenting on joining Star Fleet, or the Klingons. Her face lit up, and she knew she had finally found her calling.

Her parents were less than thrilled by the idea though. Still, her idea of joining Star Fleet and sending part of her pay home did indeed sound like a better idea than gaining a large lump of money at once. Not wanting to admit defeat, they decided to place a restriction on her, to end in the Top 5 students of her class, mainly due to the Star Fleet Academy being an offworld one, and the required money investment would be substantial.

Once again faced with a challenge, she studied hard, diving into the books and even spending most of her spare time with her nose in the books. She was both determined and motivated to see it through to the end, and through hard work and dedication ultimately managed to rank fourth best during graduation, again jumping over the bar her parents had set for her.

Even though they were sad to see her go, they knew a promise was a promise, and a few months later she was boarding a shuttle to the nearest Star Fleet Academic facility. Essentially being the first time meeting aliens on a regular basis, her grades suffered slightly as she tried to get used to it all, but they were still enough to get her enrolled in the entrance exams.

Several years passed, and Chaenai turned out to be a good student, be it somewhat mischievious at times. After a couple of incidents concerning the effects of Orion physiology on the male student body (dances in particular) several rules were made for her to minimise exposure, like not being allowed to dance at school parties, or no 'suggesting' a student to take over her curfew shift. It had taken a few months for her to slip into the routine, but once she had she was almost as normal as any other student aiming to join Star Fleet.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Engineering and Economy
Academy Minor(s): Mathematics
Hobbies and Pastimes: Dancing (alone, after getting yelled at for an... incident concerning school campus and a lunchroom table. The male students recovered after a few days. For the most part). Listening to music (late 20th century Earth music preferred). Singing.
Short-Term Goals: Earn enough money to not be called back to Orion.
Long-Term Goals: Serve as an example to other girls on Orion caught in the 'slave net', as she calls it.
Personality: Optimistic and confident, Chaenai has a positive outlook on whatever problems would come her way. With her emotions being a strong guiding factor for her, she is an idealist who is fully prepared to fight for what she believes is right. She has an imaginative mind, and tends to think in shades of gray rather than white or black. A people person, she prefers the company of others over being on her own, and has a tendency to look out for them in a playful way. Almost in direct contrast to the organised environment she works in is the complete chaos that is her quarters, rumored by those that have survived the sight to make even a Vulcan show emotions of horror on their faces.
Sense of Humor: Sarcastic, though in a playful way, without meaning to hurt someone.
Phobias: Romantic relationships, likely due to the association with slavery she linked to it when she was young.
Likes: Problems and riddles that require thought to solve.
Dislikes: Pushy men, the shape of Star Fleet ships.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Not being able to solve a problem, especially when she feels the answer should be obvious. She doesn't get angry, but generally ends up too determined to give up.
Achievements: Getting into Star Fleet Academy, despite being heavily discouraged to do so.
Disappointments: She couldn't pilot a shuttle or hovercar to save her life.
Illnesses: Albinism, minor. In her case, it has caused her hair to have significantly less pigmentation. Due to an Orion's genetic makeup giving their skins a green tone, this color of pigmentation is present in their hair as well, in her case making it blue where it would otherwise have appeared blonde. In her case, the trademark 'redness' in her eyes is also reduced to only show itself under certain lighting conditions.
Strengths: An ability to look at a problem from several angles at once.
Weaknesses: A love-hate relationship with her own physiology makes her a little uncertain when dealing with the other gender during social occasions. Also, her driving skill is dismal.
Fears: Having to return to Orion and get a husband. And have kids. This would also give her the feeling that she failed the one chance she got.
Prejudices: Criminals, the kind that thinks with a blaster rather than their heads.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Dresses and accessories, but when there's little time a simple robe 'would have to do'. Regardless of how much she's against it, she's still Orion-raised after all.
Distinguishing Features: Minor case of albinism, further explained in the 'Illness' section.
Pets: None.
Friends: Malaika, a childhood friend, and the person that ultimately helped her convince her parents that she should be given a chance in Star Fleet. Stayed behind on Orion though.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: The argument she had with her parents when they turned out to have something entirely different in mind concerning her future. Thinking back on the argument, she still feels hurt and disappointed, despite understanding why her parents objected.
Best Time: Seeing her grades, and knowing she won the deal with her parents. Finally having her chance to be free.
Most Crucial Experience: Agreeing to the conditions her parents placed on her to enlist, not only making the cut, but also among the top five of her class.
Role Model: None, as there is no precedent for Orion girls in Star Fleet Academy.
