Personal History

Lucy is the definition of a boomer, born and lived on freighters, one freighter in her case. Her parents worked on the S.S Leighton, her mother was a helmsman and her dad was the ships cook. The Leighton belonged to Crandell Trans-Global and was one of the older ships owned by the business.

From a young age Lucy learned about the ship she lived on, spending many an hour listening to the old timers and their stories. The first thing she learned was the origin of the name Leighton and why the ship was christened with it. Captain Maxwell Leighton, he was one of the first Captains to work for the company and had died just prior to the purchase of the freighter.

Growing up she learned with the rest of the kids on the ship, the ages varied as there was only one classroom and teacher. But she did well enough and would help the younger children as she got older.

Though technically she was human, visits to Earth were extremely rare, the first time being when she was five. That was the first time she met her maternal grandparents, whenever they were able to get back to Earth, they were who she stayed with.

When she was old enough and like many boomers, Lucy helped out on the Leighton, doing non technical tasks mainly and more often than not worked with her father in the galley. But whenever the girl could, she would visit the bridge and develop a love of flying from her Mother. Going to the bridge was not always possible, as the Captain was a very strict man and didn’t take kindly to kids being on the bridge, not even his own. So any visits would happen when the First Officer was on watch.

For her 15th birthday she was permitted to go onto the bridge, but by that point it was under the direction of the Leighton’s new Captain, the former First Officer Natalie Rawlins and a friend of the family. As a present, Rawlins allowed the teenager to begin learning about helm control, thus sparking an interest with flying. That interest would later become a passion.

It was one evening after school, that Lucy was sat at the helm under the watchful eye of her mother. The ship was descended upon by Nausicaan raiders, who were intent on stealing a cargo of Regreein wheat. The freighter was heavily damaged during the attack, a disruptor hit close to the bridge caused a small explosion and injured Andrea. The same hit caused the bridge to be cut off from the rest of the ship, effectively stopping any form of assistance coming to help.

Seeing her mother injured was of course very distressing, despite the strong urge to run to Andrea, Rawlin’s convinced her to stay at the helm, while Rawlin’s tended to the injured as best she could.

The Leighton was able to get out a distress signal and fortunately a starship was nearby, having gone unnoticed by the raiders due to the proximity of a nebula. The USS Tennison was still some distance away and panic was ensuing on board the Leighton. It was Lucy who without having to be told, turned the freighter towards the Hollis and shortened the time to get help a little.

After inflicting serious damage and stealing half of the cargo, the raiders turned and fled at the sight of the approaching USS Tennison. The greatest loss was the life of two Leighton crew members, several others were injured including Andrea.

Her actions that day were praised by not only the Leighton crew, but the crew of the assisting Star Fleet vessel. It was one of the greatest senses of achievement Lucy had ever felt. As a reward for her actions, she was given a tour of the Tennison, by the ships First Officer.

Following the attack the Leighton was moved to a Federation facility, where she would be in drydock for three months undergoing repairs and a few upgrades. It was at that facility where the Tennison was also in for a refit, giving Lucy the opportunity to meet more Star Fleet officers. She struck up a friendship with Midshipman Holly Grist, a Junior Tactical Officer from the Tennison. Holly was about seven years older than Lucy, but that didn’t stop them from becoming friends

Lucy and Holly kept in touch and would write to each other regular, sharing stories of their respective adventures. The seed of a budding explorer was planted and beginning to bloom. Of course she had a few years to wait, before applying/joining the service. But it was a goal she was determined to reach.

Her decision to leave the Leighton was tough for her and for her parents, even a little bit disappointing on the latters part. But she was supported with love and encouragement nonetheless. It wasn’t a rule as such, more of an expectation, that Boomers stayed in the freight service.

Star Fleet

As soon as she was of age and on her first attempt, Lucy was accepted into Star Fleet Academy. It was strange for her to begin with, with a much larger and open space than a freighter. The other thing was the amount of people, many other races and generally everything was a new and a little scary for her.

It didn’t take too long to settle in and making friends was quite easy for her, which helped in no small way to get her through. Lucy began training in Tactical studies, concentrating on Helm and Auxiliary craft operations.

During down time Lucy engaged in party going, loving to perform in drinking challenges and other such party games. Other activities she found enjoyable, were things that would give a surge of adrenaline. Such as roller coasters, bungee jumping and eventually anything with high speed. The speed freak that she was, saw Lucy buy herself a motorcycle and would go for long drives whenever she could. It was a way of clearing her head.

During a term break she was reunited with Lt(JG) Grist, who took her young friend out to a rock festival and there came a new love, music and loud music at that. Also a bit of mindless drinking and dancing, a real way to let the proverbial hair down.

At graduation both of her parents were present, as was Holly who was a full Lieutenant by that point and a Chief Tactical Officer. It was one of the happiest days of her life, seeing others so happy was great too.

She passed her exams in the top 90 percentile and graduated from the Academy at the age of 23 as a Midshipman. Her first assignment was to the USS Portland, where after six months of service she was promoted to Ensign.

Styles continued to serve on the Portland for another two years, serving admirably and with a great sense of purpose. Thinking that she was doing what Star Fleet and the Federation stood for. There were of course good experiences and bad, but Lucy prided herself for being able to rise above it. The exploration assignments were a particular favourite of hers, she also took great satisfaction when they would assist those in need. One such experience was responding to a crippled freighter, which had been attacked by a pirate organisation.
