Personal History

ll things considered Streelan had an objectively cushy childhood growing up on the western coast of the continent of In’tar on Kaminar. Living in the local town of Rytan and born to a schoolteacher father and physician mother, he seemed to have a pretty good start in life. His father would teach him the basics of what he needed to know in life  when he could while his mother took care of his health and well-being the best she could and kept him well fed. It was almost the dream combination of parents in anyone’s eyes. His childhood was spent largely buried in books and reading (his father’s efforts) all manner of works, including those from Earth, Andor, Tellar and beyond that still. He discovered early on into childhood (unsurprisingly) that he found books easier to understand than people; at least with books they had a plotline you could follow.

Growing up, he unfortunately found himself being not exactly the best treated among his peers - while he was mild as most Kelpien children tended to be poor Streelan was additionally a shut-in that preferred to sit alone and read or study whatever he pleased over go outside and socialize with the other schoolchildren. This sadly meant that he did not have very many friends, which he didn’t quite mind, frankly. All he needed to do was focus on his studies, at least in his opinion. Knowing this his parents attempted to assist him in socializing by enrolling him in various after-school activities, none of which he was good at - or quite helped with his awkwardness or shut-in tendencies.

While things certainly seemed peaceful on Kaminar, at least at prima facie, they really weren't. While by and large most Kelpiens supported the new joint government, there still remained a portion of society who opposed the idea, believing that the alliance went against the natural order of predator and prey. For many years they remained a small yet vocal group, opposing the governing body of the planet and its decisions, largely not too obtrusive…

...at least, until the day of his 15th birthday. It should have been a normal birthday dinner at a local café,  just himself and his parents. He would've never suspected that the four Kelpiens sitting and talking in the corner seat had antiproton pistols under their clothes and had plans to terrorize the shop. He didn't expect them to pull out their weapons at the height of the dinner crowd and begin firing at the patrons when the café was at its fullest and certainly didn't expect to be hit in the back, the antiproton particles burning a hole through his shirt. He next felt an arm wrap round his throat, fabric soaked with some kind of chemical pressed to his nose, the sharp tang of chemicals up his nostrils… before all went black.

Streelan was taken to a safe house, where he was forced to watch and witness as his kidnappers negotiated furiously with the local government to accept their cause - and kill one hostage every time their demands were refused. In total Streelan was forced to watch the slaughter of four other Kelpiens - including both parents - and might have lost his own life too had the local law enforcement not intervened and taken him to a hospital.

He would spend the next many months a changed boy, mostly silent to the point of nonverbal, listless and unwilling to interact unless he absolutely had to. During this period he understandably lost a good few of his friends, which only served to make his mental health deteriorate more - and it would take nearly being retained in his grade for poor grades to make him realize that things had to change.

The next few years to get himself to a semblance of baseline were hardly easy; in fact they were painful and arduous, full of sessions with counselling personnel and a lot of reflection and regaining the trust of his classmates and peers.  It was here that he developed a like for athletics; he joined the school track and field team.

Completing tertiary education wasn't quite enough though; Streelan knew he had bigger goals ahead of him to reach for. The idea of going into space and doing good by other people was a noble goal, he reckoned, and Starfleet was where he thought his destiny lay. He departed for Earth aged eighteen, bound for Starfleet Academy in San Francisco. He had a firm goal in mind: to become a tactical officer. He'd realized by now that life was precious, very precious, and that there were likely many, many others like him who'd lost loved ones and had their lives irrevocably changed by it. He wanted to make sure that never happened again, not to him and certainly not to anyone else. No one else should have to suffer through that loss.

Suffice to say that he was a little overwhelmed by the size of the campus upon first seeing it, or the sheer variety of his fellow cadets. Everything was so big and so shiny to him, having come from the the suburbs. This time he did make some effort to try and connect with others during the course of his studies; after all he couldn’t stay an island, as his human friends sometimes said. This being said the process was difficult and long, and lasted throughout his tenure of study. When he did interact with others, however, they found him to be surprisingly pleasant to speak with and knowledgeable if a bit (sorry, very) nerdy, if a little formal-sounding and meek.

Otherwise he was an excellent student, once again without too many friends but the few he did have he kept close and dear to him, a practice he continues to keep to this day. It was during the course of his studies that he heard of the stereotype that Kelpiens that had not gone through vahar’ai were meek and mild, and tended to be pushovers, in being terrified of anything and everything. That he did not like - and he made sure that no one had the opportunity to laugh at him for it with his performance. Where he lagged behind, he worked hard to bridge the gap.

As such in addition to his training and studies he took up sporting. Track and field, basketball, even high jump - it wasn’t too common for him to spend his time training for all three for hours on the holodeck. Aside from such endeavors he even spent some time as a student journalist. Plenty of things that'd place him front and center of attention and help him learn to handle it, so to speak.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Tactical
Academy Minor(s): Security
Hobbies and Pastimes: Reading (fiction works are his favorites, in particular books of the mystery and the occasional romance genre, though no cheap plots, thanks), chess (he's only an amateur, though, and plays solely to help him focus and strategize), cooking (though he's not very good at it).
Short-Term Goals: Settle in to life as a tactical officer
Long-Term Goals: Become a more confident and outgoing version of himself, captain his own starship someday.
Personality: Making friends and being confident have never been Streelan's strong suits. That said, he actively tries to improve in that aspect, more so because he hopes to become a tactical officer one day. Elsewise one will find him to be friendly and polite, if a bit nervous and flighty.
Sense of Humor: Streelan doesn't laugh very much; since nearly dying in teenhood he's found very few things funny.
Phobias: Being kidnapped and held at weaponpoint.
Likes: Fruit of all kinds especially strawberries, a good story (told verbally or in book form, it doesn't matter), good hugs
Dislikes: Rudeness, insensitivity, seeing someone alone and ostracized because they are different
Pet Peeves or Gripes: People telling him that he'll 'grow out' of his trauma eventually, inconsiderate others, being stereotyped as timid and a coward
Bad Habits or Vices: Streelan tends to stutter a bit, when especially nervous. Maintaining eye contact is a bit hard for him as well, though rest assured he tries his best
Achievements: Streelan considers getting into Starfleet Academy and doing well at all an achievement in and of itself, considering everything he went through.
Disappointments: He wishes quietly that he'd done a little better in that one Federation Standard spelling competition held in his primary school; he was a single letter away from the champion's title.
Illnesses: Streelan suffers from no illnesses, though if you count mental health conditions in this category he still suffers from survivor's guilt and PTSD, having been the sole survivor of the massive shooting that took his parents from him.
Strengths: Arguably mental resilience considering everything he's went through thus far. Streelan is also a hard worker and will spend all the time and effort he needs in order to complete something to the best of his abilities.
Weaknesses: Streelan has difficulty with making friends and forming bonds in general; some part of him feels that it might just be best to not bother at all considering how anyone and everyone could be taken from him at any moment, especially after the incident which changed his life.
Fears: Having those he cares about taken from him, being kidnapped and restrained (more intensely than others), being not good enough as a tactical cadet, chasing those he cares about away.
Prejudices: Streelan has a strong dislike for those who think Kelpiens are cowardly before vahar'ai. He views it as a negative stereotype which needs to be quashed and as such tries to fulfill that role himself.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Simple but smart. You'll find him dressed in simple t-shirts or button-up shirts (usually cotton, more comfy that way) paired with jeans or sometimes shorts when he feels like it.
Distinguishing Features: A large burn mark on the back of his neck caused by antiproton pistol fire.
Pets: None, he doesn't trust himself to take care of one as of yet.
Friends: A relatively short Kelpien girl called Aarva, whom he met in the equivalent of secondary school. The two became friends when he, in a rare spurt of initiative, approached her of his own accord when he saw that she was ostracized by their classmates for her height. The two became fast friends and remain in contact to this day; he talks to her over subspace comms or subspace letter when either one of them isn't available, regularly.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: The shooting and hostage situation that took the lives of his parents and three other Kelpiens, which he had to witness for himself. He in fact was clinging to his mother's arm when she was shot; he felt her grow cold when it happened.
Best Time: Receiving his acceptance letter to Starfleet Academy informing him that he'd passed the gruelling entrance examination
Most Crucial Experience: Deciding that he needed to turn his life around and out of the mental slump he'd been put into by the shooting - and thereafter to join Starfleet.
Role Model: Saru, after hearing stories of his life in Starfleet before his subsequent 'death'.
