Personal History

Pre-Starfleet

Simon Starr was born in Cambridgeshire in the United Kingdom as the youngest child of Simon and Susan Starr. His upbringing was that of a proud family. His father a very successful Merchant, and his mother a member of Star Fleet in the sciences division. His older brother stood to inherit their father’s ship and business, while their daughter married into another successful family. Being the youngest, Simon was always a bit of a rebel as a child. He wasn’t fond of academic education and always showed more skills in physical activities than the rest of his family. While at secondary school, he became captain of the rugby team, and was one of the more well-known students, considering his family’s background.

This was often seen as a benefit to most, but Simon always felt himself getting compared to the rest of his family. He wanted to stand on his own merit but his family’s reputation made that difficult as he was expected to live up to something. Being the only physical member of his family, this was often seen as a downside. People often asked him “why don’t you have the mathematical skills of your father” or “why aren’t you as clever as your mother?” Questions he became all too familiar with.

It wasn’t until he finished his education as a youth when things started really changing for the family. He often spent time with his uncle, as his parents were not often there, having missed all but his 10th and 16th birthdays. He saw his uncle more as a parent than his own direct family, having spent more time with him and his siblings than his parents. Ralph always looked down on Simon, as he expected him to go into the family business - something that Simon wasn’t cut out for. His sister always thought of Simon as someone to protect, sometimes to a point where Simon saw her more as a hindrance than someone he could turn to. This changed three months before his 18th birthday.

In June 2415, as his parents returned to Earth for his 18th birthday, they were murdered by someone the family considered a close friend. Ralph Starr Sr’s right-hand man in his merchant business betrayed the family, wanting the ship to fall to him. In his confession, he claimed that Ralph Starr Sr traded with Romulans. Gordon Stevens, the man in question, had a personal history with Romulans, having his Grandfather killed in action by them. When Ralph managed to secure a trade deal with a rogue faction of Romulans, who had turned against their Empire, Gordon got angry and killed him in the process. Susan didn’t believe this and, with Simon’s help, albeit indirectly, found out the truth that no such deal was ever made, and Steven used this to encourage a mutiny in the crew, and he killed her to stop her from testifying. As Simon didn’t typically live with his parents, he wasn’t with his parents when they were murdered on that day, and Stevens was unaware of Susan’s brother, who looked after the children.

This was a devastating blow to the family after a happy occasion just four months prior - the marriage of his sister to Richard McGee, a doctor who worked in one of the most major hospitals in the country as a consultant. A time of celebration, though their parents were not there to celebrate in the joy.

When Simon found out that Stevens was involved in his parents' murder, Simon crossed paths with one of the crew members that was on Gordon’s side. This led to an altercation, which landed Simon in the hospital for a few days after being stabbed in the arm as he threw a punch at Levit, Gordon Steven’s best friend and right-hand man. Simon realised that he handled the situation poorly, having started the fight. When asked if he wanted the scar to be removed, he refused, mentioning that it would remind him what happens if you rush in unprepared into dangerous situations in the future. Though he had been a rebellious youth, he never found a need to jump straight into violence, and that has weighed on his mind ever since.

After this, Simon turned more to investigative crime and started working for the local law enforcement as a trainee. It was there he garnered the attention of Starfleet Security and was recommended by his superior in the law enforcement agency to become a full member of the division. After four years in law enforcement, Starr left the agency to leave for San Francisco to begin his new adventure, following in his mother’s footsteps as a Starfleet officer. Something he knew would at least make her proud. Something he had failed to do as a child, and while she was alive. His brother, though reluctant to at first, saw how Simon turned his life around while working for the local police, and eventually agreed Simon’s talents would serve the Federation better than him, and wished him the best. This, in turn, led to a healthy rivalry between the two of them, as he had finally finished the paperwork and training he needed to take over his father’s business, though forced into it four years earlier through their father’s death.

When Starr Jr. originally took over the business, things were rough for a time as he got his footing, and like his father, Simon began seeing less and less of him as his travels took him further and further away. His sister having just married, left just Simon and his uncle, who always was proud of the work his sister did, to discuss his future. He finally left his uncle as he began his journey through the academy.

Starfleet Academy

In his first year at the academy, his mother’s success acted as a burden, finding it hard once again to stand on his own achievements. He excelled in the security classes, though was a little bit less successful in the Science department, which disappointed a lot of the academy instructors in his first year, though they could see where his talents lied.

During his second year, Starr focused more on his chosen division and was highly successful in his Federation Law class. Having served as Law enforcement before during the fleet, he found this one of the easier subjects he had taken and was one of the top of the class. He continued this path throughout the rest of the academy, going into interstellar and criminal law and doing extremely well in these subjects. He also excelled in the physical classes and showed potential as a talented security officer and investigator.

USS Copernicus

Starr’s initial assignment was a security officer posting aboard the USS Copernicus commanded under Captain Jane Fields. Straight from his first day, he was kept busy with a brawl kicking off in Ten Forward. Eventually finding a civilian who claimed to have mental issues being responsible.

Starr was then assigned to an away team to help retrieve some survivors from a planet. When he arrived, the planet was about to have a storm, and in the breaks, the team he was part of made their way to the where the survivors were. During that time, Simon helped with the evacuation and was held at gunpoint before being in the middle of some crossfire, taking injuries to his arm. Just as the away team was about to leave, the storm started getting worse, and not everyone on the away team made it back.

Upon returning to the ship, Starr was treated by the team for his gunshot injuries to his arm, with enough time before the ship found itself being crushed like a can from opposing forces. As the gravity went offline. The main bridge had significant issues, and an evacuation to the aux bridge needed to be facilitated. Crawling through the Jefferies tubes, Simon and a team of officers managed to find a route for the bridge crew, though some of it was through open space.

Once Starr had got the first group back, he continued assisting with the wounded that had been shored up in the gymnasium. He got to know his colleagues better on the mission, and also lost someone. He had lost his parents before, murdered. But this time it was different. His parents’ lives were taken from them by force, he saw Ensign Parker give it up by choice, and that made Simon realise that death can sometimes have purpose. Even the death of his parents, which has led him to becoming a Starfleet officer.
