Personal History

The first thing to know about Zachariah Spencer is that he absolutely hates the name Zachariah. “Zach”, “Spencer”, and even “Spence” are all acceptable over the old fashioned “Zachariah” that has always made him feel like an old man.

Zachariah was born on Earth in San Francisco to aging parents. His father was a civilian architect who traveled across Earth and nearby locations designing buildings and other structures. His mother, Elizabeth, often traveled with her husband and worked in a flower shop when they were not traveling.

Elizabeth had always wanted to be a mother but it was not until she was in her forties that she finally conceived her first, and only, child. They named the child Zacharias, which means “God has remembered”, as a way of symbolizing his special (but late) arrival in the world.

After Zachariah was born his mother stopped traveling with her husband and opened her own flower shop in San Francisco. It was there that Zach was raised and called home. His childhood was fairly normal and was filled with trips to the Zoo, playdates with friends, and the monotony that is primary education. Given that his parents were older when he was born, he never knew his grandparents, never had siblings, and his few cousins were much older than he was.

At the age of fifteen tragedy first struck in Zachariah’s life. While traveling, his father was killed in an accident. It was a depressing time for the family but as time passed the pain lessened and Zachariah and his mother continued life together.

Zach was a smart student. This was not necessarily because he was gifted with intellect, but rather because he put in hours upon hours into studying. Although Zach did have many friends during his school years, he often spent his nights and weekends either at home with his mother or helping out at the flower shop (which often left a lot of time open for reading).

Although fascinated by botany, Zach’s love of science leaned more towards those with heartbeats. After graduating high school at the age of 17, he studied pre-medicine at Stanford University and eventually went to medical school at the University of California San Francisco. Zach’s studies specialized in cardiovascular surgery where he eventually became board certified.

At the age of 26 tragedy struck again. Zach’s mother suffered a major heart attack and died. The irony of him being a heart surgeon and his mother dying of a heart related illness was not lost on Zach and for the first time in his life, he felt completely lost. Although his friends, the hospital he worked at, and his life in general, so much of it had been based upon his being close to his mother. Wanting to stay close to her had been why turned down hospital offers on other planets or colonies. Zach had never wanted to be more than a transporter beam away from home.

After a lengthy conversation with his best friend Daniel, Zach decided that a change of scenery would help him move on best. He therefore left the flower shop to one of the dedicated workers, someone who had been like a sister to him, and applied for Star Fleet Academy. Having grown up in San Francisco, Zach had met many Star Fleet officers and appreciated their dedication and service. It was a logical choice for him to join.

At the Academy Zach learned a few things about himself that he had not previously known. One, was that he was much harder headed than he had realized. Zach realized that most surgeons, himself included, had big egos and often thought they knew best. Although he had not been top dog at his hospital, he had been there long enough to not be questioned. Fitting in to the chain of command structure of Star Fleet was difficult.

A second thing Zach learned is that he did not like Phasers at all. Growing up Zach had never handled a weapon. As a doctor he, generally speaking, did not like violence at all. In his general security course, he was required to learn and fire a phaser. Zach did not like this and after a near negligent discharge he quickly grew a phobia of them. After passing the required certifications and courses, he never touched one again. While at the Academy, Zachariah studied trauma surgery. He knew this would be beneficial and also found it to be a good challenge as well.
