Soliton wave

A soliton wave is a confined energy phenomenon that travels at faster-than-light speeds, with potential applications in spacecraft propulsion and subspace communication.

In 2368, Dr. Ja'Dar of Bilana III conducted an experiment to use soliton waves as a means of efficient faster-than-light transportation. The technique employed stations on two planets: one which generated the wave, and one which would generate a scattering field to dissipate the wave at the destination. During this process, this would decelerate the vehicle traveling inside of said wave.

  • While the test initially appeared to be successful, the unmanned test vehicle was destroyed, and the wave began to accelerate towards the destination planet
  • The wave's increased energy could destroy the planet, but was saved when shot with photon torpedoes

Soliton wave rider experiment

  • First step: "Twenty three field coils, working in concert, will generate the soliton wave from this point on the planet surface."
  • Second step: "We will have our test ship towed to a position approximately two million kilometers from Bilana III. If our theories are correct, the wave will envelop the ship and push it into warp."
  • Third step: "The wave will be directed toward Lemma II, about three light years distance. Our sister facility there which will generate a scattering field which will dissipate the wave..."
  • Fourth step: "...and bring the ship out of warp."
