A sleeper ship is a colloquial term for a spacecraft where the crew is placed into suspended animation (see: stasis) for all or part of the journey.
Some pre-warp vessels, such as the DY-100 class, were sleeper ships. These ships were seen as necessary, due to the time involved in space travel until, about the year 2018.
- Until then, it took years just to travel from one planet to another.
Despite the development of warp drives were still in existence in 2210, due to deep-space exploration.
Civilizations that were known to use sleeper ships included Earth / Humans in the late 20th century to early 21st century, and Tellarites.
