Personal History

Adra is the lovechild of his Trill mother Elspeth Sky, who fell for a Trill man who was on earth selling

dilithium recycling equipment. They kept in touch after he left, until she found out she was pregnant. He never contacted her again after that, and all attempts to find him had been unfruitful. After Adra was born Elspeth stopped focusing on finding Raster (which was the mans supposed name) to save her energy for focusing on her son, and her duties at work.

Coming to Earth to follow a job opportunity she though would give her a chance to improve her life, Elspeth worked for a small research group in the San Francisco Bay as a clerical worker. As Adra grew it was clear he was exceptionally bright and she began to saving credits and latinum so she could give him the opportunity for schooling specialized in nurturing the skills of bright children.

Elspeth's hours were cut and eventually she was fired, her and Adra, then six years old, no longer had an income. Attempting to make ends meet Elspeth eventually turned to the inglorious world of prostitution just to maintain a life for her son. She often went without so that Adra would not have to. Life was hard, and her work could never be mentioned around others, but at least Adra was happy.

One evening, after just a couple of months of this, Elspeth picked Adra up from the childcare on the way home from a client, and headed to the bank to leave a deposit of latinum in the account. She never made it. Taking a shortcut through a side street most would avoid, but she had taken plenty of times, they were accosted by two Andorians. When they demanded she hand the latinum over she refused, pleading for then not to take the money which kept a roof over their heads. When she refused to hand it over, they simply slew her. No more words or warnings, they stabbed her, and Adra, before taking the small pouch of latinum and running off into the night.

The next morning Adra woke up on a biobed, alone and scared. The last thing he remembered was the larger Andorian’s wicked barbed blade pushing into his mothers abdomen, almost in slow motion. Then he remembered feeling it pushing into his own gut, before everything went black and he woke up here.

One of the Cadets from the nearby Star Fleet Academy had found him that morning.. his birthday, in the alleyway with his mother. Elspeth was long since dead, but Adra was still holding on. Adra later forgot the name of the Cadet in the whirlwind that followed, but still remembers the kindness of the act and the Star Fleet personnel who nursed him back to health. At the time however, he was anything but gracious.

After the doctors nursed him back to health and learned about what happened, Adra was to be brought to a local family in the area for adoption. Adra understood what happened to his mother, he was incredibly smart for his age after all, but refused to accept it. Going out to the hospital garden and recreation area one day to ‘play’, he ran off and hid among the streets of San Francisco he had walked many times with his mother.

The next few years went by and Adra lived on his own, stealing when he had to and living off the ocean as much as he could for a small boy in the city. He made use of free meal services and emergency shelters when the weather got too cold. The town officials and the odd Star Fleet cadet and officer that saw him would recognize him of course, as he was a known ‘missing child’ but he knew the streets better than them and would use that knowledge and his wits to avoid them. By the time he was twelve Adra was as streetwise as they come and could ably defend himself against most people, or hide when he knew he couldn’t. As the years had gone by he had become increasingly bitter and depressive, afraid to make friends with anybody.

Eventually, as things would have it, he finally made a friend. Sitting on the swings at a community playground, he met a human girl named Shelly, Shelly Price. She was very pretty, very nice, and all of a sudden Adra just felt he could open up, so he did. They were the same age, twelve, and ran around playing for a time. When her mother told her it was time to go she got a better look at Adra and recognized him from the missing children reports. With Shelly’s help, she convinced Adra to come home with them.

Adra stayed with the Prices’ for a couple months. During this time Shelly’s mother, who was a counselor at a local private school (which, as luck would have it, had a program for gifted children), arranged for Adra to have quarters at, and attend, school. Adra was not comfortable with the idea at first, but when they said he could come visit once a month he agreed. School wouldn’t be too bad if he could spend time with his first real friend, at least once in a while.

Adra did well there, so well in fact that he was accepted into a Star Fleet program for troubled but gifted youth. Not only did he attend his regular schooling but as part of the program was able to take more advanced classes for engineering and science, two areas that fascinated him. When he had free time he would sometimes sit in on more advanced classes for the actual cadets, trying to learn as much as he could. Eventually he was allowed to take more classes as the instructors noticed his acumen.

Finishing his classes at the private school early, Adra petitioned to take the Star Fleet entrance exams at only fourteen, and passed. He was officially a Cadet of Star Fleet, the organization that had saved his life.

In the Academy, Adra was totally dedicated, and consumed by his studies. He was younger than most of the other students, and his natural tendency to look younger than he was set him apart even more. For the next two years at the Academy, despite doing well in his studies, Adra often was involved in incidents with the other students, many times being given extra duties as punishment. Shortly after he turned sixteen however, Shelly was accepted to the Academy. His friend, the one girl who had gotten through to him before was there.

From that point on, things were much easier. They spent most of their free time together. If they were studying, usually they would be together. The same for recreation. Over the next few years Adra’s reputation as a gifted troublemaker turned around and as he got into less trouble, he became known more for his accomplishments than his previous infamy. He also finally started opening up and making friends. Shelly graduated the academy a few years before Adra, as he was doing a double major with many electives, whereas she was in the medical field. But by then Adra had grown up and was much more socially adept, and continued to do well all the way through graduation.

Graduating top of his class, Adra then went on to his first assignment as an Engineering Officer aboard the USS Gettysburg.

Notes: While Adra and Shelly were extraordinarily close, their relationship has never turned into anything romantic.

Sense of Humor: A smattering of nonsensical, silly humor, witty sarcasm, and technical stuff nobody else gets.
Phobias: None
Likes: Adra has swam regularly since he was little, growing up fighting, he enjoys, and took Martial Arts at the Academy for his entire stay, mastering the Terran arts of Judo, Tae Kwon Do, and Kung Fu. He also has a passion for invention, creation, and just learning how things work.
Dislikes: Being treated like a child or brushed off because of his youthful appearance.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Willful ignorance
Achievements: Accepted to Star Fleet Academy at fourteen, developed a proprietary AI for holograms that is highly extensible and can be modified to many tasks, from automated research to more traditional entertainment functions.
Disappointments: Adra’s longtime avoidance of people, despite his friendliness now, still manages to get the better of him from time to time. He is still working on this.
Illnesses: None
Strengths: A regular MacGyver, Adra can visualize just about anything in his mind, and if he can visualize it, he can build it, program it, or improve it.

Distinguishing Features: Between his early start at his technical studies, voice, his pale skin and apparent inability to grow facial hair, Adra appears much younger than most Star Fleet officers, often mistaken to be as young as sixteen and inadvertently dismissed as inexperienced or unknowledgeable in his field. Adra’s joints throughout his body are also hyper-mobile (sometimes incorrectly termed ‘double jointed’) which sometimes creates amusing situations when he unexpected twists or contorts to fit through a space, pick something up, or accomplish some other task around those unfamiliar with his ability
Pets: None, aside from the occasional AI creation
Friends: Shelly Price, from his youth and the Academy

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Watching his mother Elspeth stabbed before him.
Best Time: When he was informed that Shelly Price would be joining him at the Academy.
Most Crucial Experience: Meeting Shelly Price at the playground when he was twelve.
Role Model: Unable to form relationships for so long, Adra does not have a specific role model

defined, but rather aspires to personify the hero image he has created in his mind of the Star Fleet Cadet who saved him when he was younger.
