Personal History

Karma spent his childhood moving around the quadrant as his father was transferred from post to post by the company he worked for. This made it very difficult for Karma to make friends. It eventually became too much of a struggle to maintain friendships, so Karma started finding activities he could do alone and eventually transformed into a loner. Having his brother nearby was little consolation, as Dean had his own interests and had to time to “hang out” with his little brother.

Matters where made worse when Karma was 9, while his family was stationed on Starbase 187. Karma was eating lunch in the school cafeteria when Kevin Simpson, the class bully, placed a large spider on Karma’s head. Karma panicked and jumped from his seat, attempting to get the thing out of his hair. During the struggle, the spider crawled onto Karma’s face. He became so frightened that he fell to the floor and curled into a ball. Karma was horrified when it was over and he realized he had wet himself during the ordeal, and all the kids laughed at him and teased him.

Eventually, when Karma was 10, his father earned a permanent position on Earth, and the family settled in the North American state of California where both his parents found secure jobs at the same company. Things began to improve for Karma, as he was able to once again form friendships. Over time he learned to interact with others and slowly came out of his shell.

During this time, Karma excelled at school and joined the local 3-D Chess Club. He spent all his free time learning everything he could about the game and, at the age of 12, won the North American Junior 3-D Chess Championship. He was heartbroken when he lost in the finals of the Planetary Championship, and switched from 3-D Chess to the Classic Earth Chess game that he had discovered during his chess research.

Karma’s life took a dramatic turn when he was 14. Karma and his brother were allowed to accompany their father during a shuttle flight to test a new computer interface panel that was in development. It was scheduled to be a 5-day trip and it was a good opportunity for the Sinclair men to attempt to heal the rift that had slowly begun to form over the years.

Things were going well during the trip and Karma used the opportunity to learn some of the procedures for operating a shuttle. His brother and father were in the rear of the shuttle having a bonding moment when the entire ship began to shake. Before anyone could do anything, a shaft of light surrounded Karma and a moment later he found himself staring at a Vulcan. The Vulcan escorted him to Sick Bay and ignored all of Karma’s questions. In Sick Bay, Karma was informed that the shuttle had encountered a “spatial anomaly” and the Vulcan engineers only had time to beam Karma off the shuttle before it vanished. Karma was stunned and demanded that they rescue his father and brother. He was informed that the anomaly was growing and that the ship had to leave the area before it too was damaged. Karma once again insisted that a rescue mission be attempted, and he was told that it would be “illogical” to remain in the area. Karma was helpless and at the mercy of the Vulcans. At that moment, Karma vowed that he would find his father and brother, that he would become a Science Officer so he could find, analyze, and map any and all spatial anomalies in the quadrant, and that he would NEVER trust a Vulcan for as long as he lived.

Karma was returned to Earth where he was informed that, since no wreckage had been found, his father and brother were being officially listed as Missing In Action by the Electronics Company. From that time on, Karma spent the remainder of his childhood trying to learn everything he could about spatial anomalies. He worked hard on his grades and began getting into shape so that he would be able to pass the entrance exam for the Academy.
