Personal History

Born to two Romulan refugees who fled to the Federation in the wake of the Romulan/Federation war, Silran has never seen the inside of Romulan space. His parents had served in the Romulan Navy, but following the actions of their commander in the Bosen Rift at the conclusion of the Romulan/Federation war which resulted in the survival of the USS Enterprise-E and the defeat of the Romulan Empire s last hope of victory, defected to the Federation in the hopes of finding a better life, and living with honor.

Settling on Betazed and trying merely to get on with their lives, they had a son and a daughter. Silran, the eldest, was born nearly a month premature, hence his name: great haste in the Romulan tongue. Donatra, the younger, was named after their commander aboard the Valdore, who had become disillusioned not only with the war but with how the Romulan government ruled the people, and in the end assisted the Federation in defeating the Scimitar to do the only thing that truly mattered: save lives.

Silran lived up to his name. He started walking early, talking early, graduated from his primary and secondary schools a year ahead of the others, and not out of any great intelligence; he just refused to wait. He worked hard at everything, especially history, which he struggled with as he had difficulty grasping the greater picture that he knew was unfolding, but couldn't see.

During the Second Romulan/Federation War, which happened to be his senior year of high school, many of the students at his school grew to distrust him. These people who had been his friends suddenly saw him merely as a Romulan, and it was a feeling he knew he never wished to have again. One day after classes, a group came for him, and would have beaten him badly had he not been able to get away. He has had difficulty trusting people ever since.

At least in part to prove his loyalty to the Federation, he went to the Academy for Flight School. His father had wanted Silran to go into diplomacy, but he wouldn t listen. Duty and Honor pulled him to service, and he chose to listen to them.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Flight Control
Academy Minor(s): Starship Tactics, Galactic Politics
Hobbies and Pastimes: Hiking, Fencing, Stratagema, and the occassional orbital skydive
Short-Term Goals: Get settled in on the Enterprise, possibly get to know some of the people, and keep from upsetting the Klingon CTO
Long-Term Goals: Improve his strategic thinking, obtain command, and redeem the honor of the Valdore
Personality: Strong willed, possibly a bit quick to anger (especially on matters of species), but has a deep-seated sense of honor that keeps him (mostly) in line
Sense of Humor: Dry, utilizing a large amount of sarcasm; more open to people he considers friends than to most others
Phobias: Extremely large crowds
Likes: Open sky, being useful, being accepted for who he is
Dislikes: Bigots who discriminate solely on the basis of race
Pet Peeves or Gripes: People who won't listen to reason
Bad Habits or Vices: Tends to overthink critical decisions, making them either late or wrong, or occassionally both
Achievements: Graduating from secondary education a year early, graduating the Academy, and being posted to the flagship of the fleet
Disappointments: Never having seen Romulus
Illnesses: None
Strengths: Quick on his feet both literally and metaphorically; can see a way out of any situation, just not always the best one
Weaknesses: Sometimes fails to see the bigger picture; quick to anger
Fears: That sometime he'll make a decision that's completely wrong, and not know it
Prejudices: Assumes that people will dislike him based solely on his species, and so preemptively backs off
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Greys and earth tones, mostly
Distinguishing Features: Other than being Romulan?
Pets: None
Friends: Effectively none; few students at the Academy befriended him, and the few who did have been posted across the fleet; his first assignment proved to be hostile, and he hasn't had enough time on the Enterprise to truly 'make friends

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Having nearly been attacked by his fellow classmates during the Second Romulan/Federation War. Being trapped and hated led to his fear of large crowds, especially since that war is still so fresh on people's minds
Best Time: One summer, having gone with his parent's to Earth, he was able to visit the museum ships at Utopia Planetia, including the Enterprise and several other relics of times past. It was a powerful moment, and drew him like a lodestone to Star Fleet
Most Crucial Experience: As he was growing up, his parents instilled him with a sense of pride and honor, in who and what he was, as well as in the Federation and the ideals it stood for. Despite not having grown up in them, his parents believed in what the Federation stood for, and passed that belief to their son
Role Model: The Romulan commander during the Bird-of-Prey incident in the 23rd century. While he worked against the Federation, he believed passionately in what he did, and that what he did was right. He was a wise man, and understood and respected his enemy, even as he denied him his prize. While Silran isn't as calm as this man was, it s something he s always admired, and hopes to attain someday
