Personal History

Sa'al couldn't have asked for a more isolated and nurture-deprived childhood. Born to a Physicist and a Chemist who worked for the Federation, Sa'al lived his life with little to no parental interaction. With his parents busy with their work and presenting their findings to their peers, Sa'al was all but dead to them it seemed. While most relatives tried to help, it wasn't enough for the young Gorn. In a desperate attempt to find some sort of satisfaction with them, he pushed himself above and beyond what was expected of them. He even took up jazz drumming to try to please them after he over heard his father saying “It's amazing how much creativity it takes to be a musician.” Tragically, he was still ignored by his parents. Every major performance missed, every martial art achievement overlooked. While it was true that his combat trainers praised his skill and his teachers putting him as sole Valedictorian, it seemed his parents did not care at all.

As he grew older, he began to get more desperate for their attention. It began to get to the point where even though he was still young, he could compete with the best the Gorn, and the Federation, had to offer. Winning youth science competitions soon became a common occurrence. Sa'al even won a grand prize with 3 other students from the Federation to take part in a tour of an actual Star Fleet vessel. Unfortunately for Sa'al, the only thing he got from his parents was “Don't disgrace our family name.” Upon his return, he told his parents he was invited to actually join Star Fleet and applied for the Academy after the Captain offered to sponsor him. He didn't even get so much as a “Good luck.” from his parents. Feeling disappointed for the last time, he swore he would never get involved with anything involving Science or Engineering as his major. With Medical school full at the time, he decided to major in Security with an emphasis in Forensics.

During early days at the Academy, he grew to admire and respect a young civilian groundskeeper, Tasha Roy, a human in her mid 20's, only slightly older than Sa'al. While at first she was shy, she gradually opened up to Sa'al and, to his surprise, she was as isolated as he was. She was a single mother to Alexa Logan, 10 years old, who's father was a Star Fleet Officer before he was killed in a mugging. Taking it upon himself, he spent every precious amount of free time with Tasha and Alexa. The relationship between the Cadet and the child grew to the point that Alexa started calling him “daddy.” Continuing his abilities as a Jazz Drummer, he joined the Star Fleet Academy Jazz Band and played his drum set for fun.

As if fate would play one final joke on him, when he sent out an invitation to his parents to attend his Graduation ceremony to every one of his family and friends. Weeks before his final exam, he waited for the total duration of a weekend pass waiting for his parents to arrive. Eventually, Alexa joined him and started teaching him how to play Thumb War. Granted, he had to be careful not to crush her hand. After minute after minute passed and there was nothing from his parents. Finally, with a sleeping Alexa on his arm, he walked up to the will call and he asked if his parents boarded the shuttle. They didn't even call to cancel saying that they were busy.

With Tasha by his side for moral support, he decided to give up his Gorn past for good. With a raised eyebrow and an “Are you sure?” from the Lieutenant, the Cadet's name was changed from Sa'al to Gabriel Sharpe. While yes he would be considered a Gorn, look like a Gorn, talk like a Gorn and even act like a Gorn, he would claim to anyone who didn't know him that he had no family. Considering he rarely spoke anyways, he figured it would be for the best. Sadly, in the back of his mind, he knew that deep down, he wanted to make his parents proud of him. The pitiful reality seems to be that no matter what he does, it will never happen.
