1954 – "CERN" (Centre Européenne de Recherche Nucléaire) is officially established. It is the European Organization for Nuclear Research, a new organization with a mission to provide first-class facilities to coordinate fundamental research in particle physics.
2004 – The asteroid "4179 Toutatis" passes within four lunar distances of Earth.
