The Selay are a carnivorous humanoid-reptilian species, native to the planet Selay.

Selay are noted for their height, their green, scaled skin, and folds of skin on their necks that resemble a cobra from Earth.

First Contact between this species and the Federation took place before 2327, at a similar time to their neighbors the Anticans.

In 2364, the Selay and the Anticans both applied for Federation membership, and as part of the process, the Enterprise-D transported a Selay delegation to resolve their conflict with the Anticans.

Known History

The Selay developed warp capabilities some time before the Anticans, whom they were among the first to make first contact with. Unfortunately, when the Selay did introduce themselves to their galactic neighbors, it ended in disaster for the more technologically-advanced species. Upon landing their ship, the Selay were attacked, brutally murdered, and their bodies consumed by the locals. The two surviving Selay barely escaped with their lives, and in turn defended themselves against the sentient pack animals, killing as many Anticans as they could. The Anticans retreated, informed the rest of the planet's population, and decreed the Selay to be "invaders." War began between the two people.

Their technology the only clear advantage they had against the Anticans, the Selay kept their neighbors at bay until requesting admission to the Federation in 2364. They were told that the Federation would only accept their membership if the two planets were at peace, and so they agreed to negotiations. Unfortunately, while a Federation ship transported a delegation from both planets to a neutral planet, tragedy struck. While the Federation ship suffered an internal emergency, Anticans took advantage, and slaughtered the Selay delegates.

Selay and its planet did become part of the Federation before the year 2378.
