Security/Marine Questions

There are questions that pertain to the Security and Marine fields on Federation Space. This page is a continuing work in progress.

How do you become a Marine?

Marines are no longer a playable position on the site.

Weapons

Are phasers the only weapons allowed to Marines or Security are there different weapons they use, equipment, armor etc?

There is a listing of the Marine weapons here. Security probably also has access to this equipment, but generally sticks to using phasers only.

What stun setting (say on a type two phaser) is a stun shot from a phaser rifle equal to?

Setting 7 probably would be the equivalent of the stun setting a PR-1 uses.

Just as a general query, as I recently took over the COS of the Ticonderoga and I've been thinking about heavy weapons.

Apart from the PR-1, are there any heavier weapons, per se, that Security is/can be equipped with? I'm thinking in terms of anti-personnel mines, the grenade launchers seen in TOS 'Arena', missile launchers and especially the TR-116 Rifle seen in DS9 'Field of Fire'.

I realize that some of these may fall under the responsibility of the Marines onboard larger ships, but I was wondering if any of these weapons could be used by Security forces onboard Starships, and if they would be in their Armouries?

Answer 1: Usually heavier weapons are restricted to Marine use. At most, Security would have access to TR-116 Rifles for sniper teams.

Answer 2: Anti-personnel mines seem contradictory to the primary role of Security onboard a starship. They'd do some pretty heavy damage to the ship too.

As for sniper teams, I'm wondering what unrestricted field of fire you could find on a starship, that would warrant the need of security teams to be able to fire at such great distances. The TR-116 is the weapon the SFMC outfits their snipers with, but that's because their mission profile is almost always different from that of SFSEC.

For any and all curious, the idea of 'heavier weapons' our new COS asked about, the SFMC R&D are working on two new projects. The first being the CAR, or Covert Assault Rifle. It is more compact than the PR-1 and the PR-1M variant, has a larger magazine and power cell capacity, and the kinetic rounds have more stopping power due to a larger caliber. It will also have some other customizable features for its users to enjoy.

Another project, whose name so far is classified, is looking to fill the current void of a heavy weapon capable of delivering significantly more firepower than the standard infantry weapons.

Yeah okay, partly a shameful SFMC plug, but I am curious about my first points.

Answer 3: Star Fleet security would also be used for ground-based tactical operations in facilities and cities, as well as during away missions in certain circumstances (SWAT). While I don't see them having a big need for explosives, I could see maybe a sniper or two assigned to starship security, especially on larger ships which might have a few SWAT type teams.

Divisions

Does Star Fleet have a NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service) of its own since Star Fleet is a naval organization?

Yes. There are many divisions of Star Fleet Security, including investigations.

Roles

Would Star Fleet Security fulfill a Police roll on Federation worlds, or is there a separate police force? Same with Medical, do they do Hospitals and ambulances or is their a separate organization?

Star Fleet is the military arm of the Federation. Though they may assist with local emergencies, just like in the real world, that there are civilian police forces, doctors, engineers, etc. It's not realistic to assume Star Fleet would be doing everything. Dr Carol Marcus, of Genesis fame, was not a Star Fleet officer, but worked with Star Fleet to conduct her research.

Uniforms

Do the Marines wear traditional Gilly suits?

It would depend on the situation. They could also wear suits that would mask them from sensors.

Equipment

Would a Star Ship carry at least a minimal amount of what could be considered "riot" gear?

Yes. Check the page above that lists Marine equipment and you can guess that Security would have similar gear available to them.

Misc

Is there still a Marine base in Quantico, VA?

In fact the Borg did get through the shields but fortunately only at the last minute and following heavy loss of life, the few Borg that landed were defeated. My understanding is that the Earth Marine facilities/basic training camps/storage depots etc. (plus those on other Federation planets that were outfitted with planetary shields) were untouched.

The Mars facility is the new Marine Corps Headquarters and already includes such facilities as the Combat Training Centre, Special Training & Tactics Centers and several research units. As time proceeds other departments might also be based there, subject of course to GOM decision. This could occur as a result of existing facilities being asked to leave their current locations when planetary systems withdraw from the UFOP or existing facilities are converted to house displaced persons, or simply as better more up-to-date facilities are built.

Where can I submit new designs and graphics?

To President Barnett.

I was reading over the specifications for the Gibraltar Class Marine Assault Ships (MAS) and I noticed that it carried 12 dropships, one of which was designated as a "MASH" dropship. Am I correct in assuming that it stands for "Mobile Army Surgical Hospital" like the modern military?

Yes.

I'm looking for the page with the new marine uniforms, but I can't seem to find it. I remember it was in an FNN report, but I can't find FNN either. Can someone give me the link?
