Personal History

Childhood: Stardate 15907 - 17708

Born Lieutenant Douglas Scott in the inner city Glasgow Douglas will tell you that he is 'No bloody relation right?' to the famous Montgomery Scott. This is absolutely true. Douglas grew up in a poor but happy family home. Despite the early diagnosis of a mild form of Tourette's syndrome his parents and sister learned to cope with this idiosyncrasy and theirs was a home filled with laughter and love.

Outside his home the Douglas did not find the world so welcoming. His community church, his school and eventual college did not make similar allowances for him. As a result he became a rebellious child, railing against all authority other than his parents. Douglas was easily intelligent enough to know the difference between right and wrong in others. He hated hypocrisy and frequently stood up for himself and others as his parents had taught him. But because of his casual swearing and seemingly inexhaustible appetite for trouble he was seen as a wild and disrespectful student. In short Douglas has a PR problem which has haunted him throughout his life; although he is much calmer now then when he was as youth.

Much to his teachers frustration, Douglas scored extremely highly in all his examinations but these scores are not reflected in his grades. This was mainly because he failed to see the point of homework or coursework and frequently refused to do it just to spite teachers that abused him. Douglas achieved graduation from senior school purely on the basis of scoring in the high 90's in all his papers. His Science and Engineering papers were so good that they have later been used as examples of a perfect solution. A fact that has amused Douglas a great deal over the years. These scores were so high that (even when combined with his woeful coursework) he still scraped passes in all his subjects.

The Academy: Stardate 17710 - 18008

To everyone's surprise Douglas took his minimum grades and submitted an application to the Star Fleet Academy. They were even more surprised when the Academy responded with asking him to sit an examination in which he passed with his normal skill and thus Douglas became a Star Fleet cadet.

Unfortunately history was now to repeat itself. His records reveal that many of his instructors thought he shouldn't graduate at all as a result of his bad behaviour, some of them even appealed for his eviction from the Academy. But strangely a personal intervention by the Academy Commandant, Jane Sheridan, ensured that he did graduate despite this. Although even with her help he was once again graduated at the bottom of his class. There was much speculation as to why the Academy's notoriously strict commandant intervened on Douglas's behalf. If asked he always cracks a poor joke ('she was a damn good shag!') and changes the subject without giving up his secrets.

The truth is that it was during this time that Douglas attended a faculty party and met the love of his life. Pamela Sheridan, a society débutante, and also the Commandants niece. Pamela was attending the Academy with the intention of joining Star Fleets political arm. She was eventually to graduate with a distinction in interstellar politics and a doctorate in psychology. The unlikely pair clicked immediately and conducted a secret courtship in which they developed a love for one another that continues to this very day.

The couple always knew that their relationship would not be acceptable to Pamela's high society parents. Douglas's Tourette's was then much worse than it would be in later life. As a beautiful society deb with famous parents Pamela was under constant press scrutiny. Both knew Douglas was likely to cause great embarrassment and distress to her family. At first it Pamela railed against this, and was on the verge of a rebellion of her own, when Douglas intervened. The Scot convinced her that he was happy for their private life to remain discreet and it was to de so until they became engaged over thirty years later.

It did not go entirely unnoticed by her Aunt. Jane Sheridan decided that she must intervene in order to protect niece from the Academy 'bad boy'. Jane did a great deal of personal research on Douglas. When her investigation began to uncover the truth about him Jane took the radical step of visiting Douglas's parents where she did not find what she had expected. It did not long in their company to realize that Douglas was a good man rebelling against a system which did not meet his needs. Returning to the Academy Jane ensured his graduation and for the rest of her tenure did what she could to ensure that the academy would take a lead in treating its students as individuals.

Star Fleet: Stardate 18009.01 – 21007.21

Since the Academy the foul mouthed engineer served in a variety of posts, and despite a seemingly unstoppable trend to the contrary has somehow achieved the rank of Lieutenant. The strange thing about his service record are the continual references to good engineering skills and not his bad behaviour. His most recent assignment was during the design and build of Star Fleets latest battleship the Nova. Douglas is an excellent Engineer, no one doubts that. He builds excellent Star Ships and runs their engineering departments well. He is a good man by your side in a crisis, and although it is hidden well, totally devoted to both Star Fleet and those he works with.

In his personal life Pamela and Douglas's relationship was to become known to Pamela's high society parents. Eventually (once again with assistance of Pamela's aunt) Douglas managed to make peace with Pamela's mother although he still remained extremely wary of her father who does not approve of him.

Mission to Gondwana (USS Nova): Stardate 21007.22 – 21011.09

Douglas was recalled from vacation with his partner Pamela to an emergency posting aboard the USS Nova. He was not well pleased, but joined the Nova en-route to its mission. The Nova was sent along with a flotilla of other ships to investigate a star system that had appeared from the alternate universe. A space-faring civilization who called themselves the Gondwanans had been detected in the system, and the Nova and her escorting flotilla were sent to make first contact.

The mission did not go well, two factions existed on the planet in a state of cold war. The flotilla's arrival proved to be a catalyst for conflict between the two factions. As a result Nova was completely incapacitated by an alien weapon fired from the surface of the planet. All major systems failed and the decision was taken to abandon ship. Douglas distinguished himself by entering a high radiation area and performing a manual ejection of the ships warp cores and backup reactors before they detonated. This gained enough time for the evacuation to be completed safely. Douglas suffered radiation poisoning in the process.

Mission to Gondwana (USS Pegasus & USS Philedelphia): Stardate 21011.10 – 21012.30

Douglas transferred to the USS Pegasus , a vessel that had recently joined the flotilla with a skeleton crew. He was appointed her CEO but did not remain aboard long. After briefly recuperating aboard the USS Pegasus, Douglas then seconded to join the frigate USS Philadelphia. The small ships mission was both scientific and diplomatic, it's aim to resolve the differences between the two native factions.

Whilst on the surface Douglas worked closely with the Philadelphia’s own CEO to mend a damaged landing strut. Condition's were extremely hostile (requiring the use of the Philadelphia’s Armoured EVA suits) but eventually the two prevailed.

Ultimately the Philadelphia’s brave efforts were in vain. The Gondwarans requested that Star Fleet leave their system. In order to avoid a major conflict, and in accordance with the prime directive, the flotilla withdrew. The Nova was salvaged and towed from the system. and was ultimately in vain as the Gondwanan system eventually reverted to it's own universe.

Douglas was late awarded a distinguished service globe for his actions aboard the Nova and gold star for his part in the mission to the Gondwaran surface.

The relief of Carraya: Stardate 21101.15 – 21104.29

Douglas's shore leave was once again cut short as Star Base Delta command received an emergency Distress call from the provisional government of the recently freed Carrayan system which was under attack. The Pegasus was assigned part of the task force sent by the Federation to assist Carraya and honour the terms of their recent treaty with the Federation.

Intel was poor but the general consensus was that a Klingon faction was attempting to reclaim Carraya for the Empire. The Pegasus role was to investigate strange enemy activity detected at a Gas Giant at the outer part of the system. The USS Ticonderoga and her support vessels were assigned to provide cover whilst the Pegasus conducted her scans.

The mission went badly, the Pegasus was ambushed through an exotic alien weapon that disabled many of her systems in a very similar way to the disastrous attack on the Nova in Douglas's previous mission. Based on his experiences then the engineer had already devised an EMP countermeasure that might neutralize the field.

Unfortunately he Pegasus was then attacked by three Klingon frigates whilst it was virtually defenceless. One of the Frigates locked a tractor beam onto the light cruiser whilst she was attempting to manoeuvre without shields. This not only resulted in the failure of Douglas's counter measure but also the involuntary separation of the Pegasus's saucer section and considerable damage to its mooring clamps.

As the senior officer remaining aboard the secondary hull Douglas took command of the Battle bridge. Although tragically a torpedo was to go wild and strike the Pegasus's saucer section in a friendly fire incident; Douglas and the young reserve crew were able to disable one frigate and destroy another when it pursued them out of the suppression field as they fled under impulse. Standing outside the field Douglas and his team were able to use long range fire to damage the remaining frigate. He was then able to find a way to neutralize the enemy weapon using a variation of his EMP technique. Unfortunately this resulted resulted in the destruction of the Pegasus's deflector Dish and the brave sacrifice of sever deflector crew in the process.

Douglas then returned to the saucer section to find Klingon ships (faction unknown) had engaged the smaller Frigates and destroyed them. He later transferred to the saucer section as it returned to Carraya and after a brief period in command supervised the extensive repairs to the ship. Later, when the Pegasus's two sections could be safely reunited, he successfully implemented a reduced warp capability using the secondary deflector dish.

Upon returning to Starbase Delta Douglas and his engineering department became even busier as they supervised the refit of their extremely damaged ship.

Shore Leave: Stardate 21104.30 – 21106.17

Douglas's First Officer LCdr Azernal expressed an interest in learning a little more about engineering and Douglas invited him to a sector engineering conference. Little did he know that this was in fact a plot by Azernal to clandestinely certify him for command. Unbeknown to Douglas, the Pegasus's command staff had been very impressed with his performance during the previous mission and were determined that he should be formally certified for command. They were well aware that Douglas had expressed no interest in taking on this responsibility and so decide to conduct an examination by subterfuge. During their time together at the conference Azernal asked many questions which Douglas answered without realizing he was in fact 'sitting' an examination, and by the time the event was over, Azernal had all the information he needed to qualify Douglas as Command Certified. Douglas remained oblivious of this fact. To their mutual surprise the two also found that they had got on very well together and leave the conference as friends.

Returning to the Pegasus Douglas was delighted to find Pamela had travelled to Star Base Delta to join him on leave. Then on 21105.06 Douglas experienced a day he will never forget. Whilst attending an awards and promotions ceremony, he was awarded a Gold Star, received his command certification and was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and was prompted by Pamela to propose. When he did so, offering her her own mothers engagement ring which he has been carrying for many years, she delighted him by saying yes!
