Personal History

Childhood

Born on a Starbase on the edge of the Romulan Neutral Zone, Jake’s early life was defined by his mother’s career in Starfleet. Erica had just put on Lieutenant Junior Grade when she had Jake. She was assigned to the USS Harper’s Ferry, which was forward-deployed to the Neutral Zone. His mother was rotated back planetside three years later, stationed on Earth as a Tactical Instructor at Starfleet Academy. Jake’s time as a toddler was spent in San Francisco, where he was exposed to the Fleet at an early age.

After his mother finished up her tour at the Academy, she was bounced around between several starships with the advent of the Second Romulan War. Jake followed suite, bouncing around from Starbase to Starbase, as Erica was always on escorts. Jake treasured the rare moment when his mother had leave to spend time with the family. He spent his primary school years in Starfleet-run schools for the children of Starfleet officers and crew, the only thing keeping him going was the mandated continuity between Starfleet-run primary schools.

When the Borg resumed their invasion, his mother was Chief Tactical Officer and Second Officer on USS Jutland (CA-1029). When the Borg advance reached the Starbase they were staging from - and coincidentally where Bill and Jake were - the Jutland was among the dozen starships that died where they stood to buy time for civilians to evacuate the sector. Between the death of his mother and his near-death experience as a mere teen, Jake was shaken to his very marrow.

Jake’s father stayed on the move during the War, accepting an emergency-basis warrant into Starfleet Medical for the duration. Bill was moved around constantly to treat whatever wounded dribbled in from the front, Jake living out of a cabin on a medical ship. When the War ended, his father retired to Alpha Centauri, away from anywhere his wife had served, and setup a small but prosperous practice as Jake entered high school.

At high school, Jake initially shied away from too much human contact. He was still reeling from the loss of his mother, and turtled up into a shell, immersing himself in his studies and little else for two years. His work ethic helped ensure that he had top grades in school, and at the gentle prodding of his father he took every math and hard science course he could make the time for. It was during this whirlwind course load that he met his best friend, Bryan.

Bryan had been struggling with Physics, and was pointed towards Jake by their teacher as a potential source of peer help. Jake was reluctant at first, but Bryan helped pull him out of the shell he’d withdrawn into as time wore on. The two struck up a fast friendship, and soon Bryan had Jake getting involved with the community for the first time, going out for Track, getting involved with student government, and all in all finally integrating into his class for the first time in his life.

Jake genuinely enjoyed his last 2 years of high school. he and Bryan were inseparable, staying out of too much trouble. Jake ended up the captain of their track team, as well as student body vice president while being deeply involved in the science club. Bryan helped pull him towards the limelight in both track and student government, two things Jake wouldn't have gone in for normally.

When the time came for higher education, Jake thought deeply about what he wanted to do with his life. he knew that, much like Bryan, he wanted to study engineering, but he was torn. He could attend anywhere he wanted with his grades and his father’s resources, but he felt a pull towards Starfleet. His feelings were incredibly muddled on the subject - his mother's death still hurt, though time had dulled the pain. He wasn't sure if he wanted to serve, or if he could live up to the ideals of Starfleet in the wake of two wars. His father saw his hesitation and confusion, and reached out to one of his mother’s colleagues from Starfleet that he'd kept in touch with. Commander Dana Warner, who had just taken command of a destroyer, took a quick spat of leave while her ship was in Earth space have a talk with Jake. After a thorough discussion with the Commander, Jake decided to transmit his application to Starfleet on the basis of the opportunity to learn as well as the opportunity to serve. His father wasn’t thrilled, but he understood Jake’s reasoning.

Academy

At the Academy, Jake threw himself into his studies with a vigor that impressed his instructors. While Engineering was his initial major, the Tactical curriculum instructors noted that he had a genuine nose for the material. The head of Academy's Tactics Department tried to persuade him to shift his track from Engineering to Tactical, seeing the potential in Jake. Jake smiled, and said that he wanted to be an Engineer, not a Tactical officer. However, he did enjoy the material, and after a talk with his academic adviser Jake extended at the Academy for nine months in order to complete a double-major in Engineering and Tactics.

Despite his overloaded coursework, Jake excelled at the Academy. He was again captain of the track team, where he was the lead 10k runner. He also studied the martial arts at the Academy, and while he was never the star of the unarmed combat team he did take a shine to jiu jitsu. Selected at a Company Commander his Firstie year at the Academy, Jake graduated in the top ten percent of his class. When starship selection came about, Jake requested the first available independent deployer, with a preference towards one of the Avenger - class heavy cruisers.

Career

USS Avenger, NCC-1500

Jake was assigned to the USS Avenger, NCC-1500 right out of the Academy.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Double major in Electrical/Computer Engineering and Starship Tactics
Academy Minor(s): None
Hobbies and Pastimes: Jake is a great fan of literature of all walks of it. At the end of a watch he likes to dive into anything from the great classics to the latest trashy adventure novel. When on shore leave, Jake loves the outdoors - hiking, swimming, etc... and is still an avid distance runner. Jake also plays a mean game of poker when he can get with a group of like-minded players.
Short-Term Goals: Now that he’s out the Academy, Jake is looking to excel on his first starship tour. To do that, he wants to achieve rapid qualification once he reaches his ship, fit in with the officers onboard, and, most important to him, not screw it up. His personal goals include making fast friends on his ship, not coming off as ‘the weird guy’, and quite possibly finding a nice girl, since his courseload precluded any kind of relationship at the Academy.
Long-Term Goals: Jake isn’t sure what he wants long-term professionally. When asked if he would go career Starfleet, he responded with ‘I’ll see how the first ship is, then I’ll think about it’ If he elects to stay in, Jake has vowed to be among the first fifth of his year group to reach Department Head, and he has his sights set on a Chief Engineer billet. If he gets out, Jake wants to pursue higher education to support landing a job as a starship design engineer. Personally, Jake would like to start a family long-term. He knows firsthand how hard the life of a Fleet family can be, but he wants to push through that.
Personality: Jake is a quiet person, fairly reserved until he gets to know you and feels comfortable around you. Once that initial awkwardness is stripped away, Jake loosens up a little into an easygoing and thoughtful individual.
Sense of Humor: Once you get to know him one quickly finds that Jake has a dry and sarcastic sense of humor, rarely missing an opportunity to snark at someone.
Phobias: Jake isn’t a huge fan of heights - which makes the Jeffries tube crawls that engineers have to do all too often ‘fun’ for him.
Likes: Science and engineering, literature, the outdoors, running, poker
Dislikes: Bullies, being forced into social situations with people he hasn't had the time to feel comfortable about
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Jake can't stand bullies, nor those who slack off.
Bad Habits or Vices: Jake has a tendency to babble when he finds himself in a social situation with people he doesn't know
Achievements: Jake is still proud of his run times in track, and the record he maintains at his high school in the ten-k run.
Disappointments: Seeing his friends graduate on time while he was still a Cadet. Even though Jake made a conscious choice to extend at the Academy to finish a double-major, it was still a major letdown to see his friends commission while he was still in the audience.
Illnesses: With a physician for a father, Jake hasn't suffered from a major illness
Strengths: Jake is a very hard worker who never gives up
Weaknesses: Jake doesn't take advice well - when he thinks he's right, good luck trying to convince him otherwise. He also has a tendency to focus too much on the problem at hand, not seeing the larger picture quite yet
Fears: Heights, the Borg
Prejudices: Jake hates Romulans, seeing their aggression as the reason he couldn't enjoy what little time he could have with his mother.
Distinguishing Features: Jake’s aubrun hair is the first thing most people notice about him. Once they get past the red hair, they note his prominent chin
Pets: None
Friends: As a Fleet brat, Jake never made lasting friendships as a kid - Mom was moving around every couple of years and it just wasn't practical. After his mother was killed in action and his father settled down on Alpha as a doctor, Jake formed a handful of more lasting friendships. His closest friend was Bryan O’Toole, a fellow student at his high school on Alpha. Bryan helped pull Jake out of the shell he’d formed in the wake of his mother’s death, convinced Jake to go out for track, and the pair were inseparable after a short time. Bryan is studying towards his Masters in Electronics Engineering.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Watching his mother's starship fight to the death against the Borg as he and his father fled
Best Time: Senior Week at the beach immediately after he graduated high school, alongside the entire track team
Most Crucial Experience: Working through and finally accepting his mother's death several years after the fact.
Role Model: Commander Dana Warner, a classmate of his mother's. She helped him finally cope with his mother's death and was a large influence on his decision to join Starfleet.
