Personal History

Latta was a big city gal living in the galactic backwaters of the Federation, so far from anything exciting or interesting, sometimes it felt like life in stasis. Life in the Colony of New Rome was not exactly boring, but it was not exactly life on Earth or Vulcan or one of the major population centers of the Federation. Not to mention the fact that New Rome was founded by war Veterans. Not that there was anything wrong with that but the older people sat around reliving battles and talking about starship specifications. How many times had Latta heard, “For sheer power and comfort you couldn’t beat the Galaxy Class Starships?”

New Rome had a huge Re-enactment Group and several times a year they would re-enact many famous battles from many different time periods throughout history. Latta didn’t really enjoy the idea of being some Corporal fighting in a place called Vietnam on Earth, circa 1960’s. Latta looked to the future; she understood the importance from learning from the past. New Rome had a rather large Community College with a great reputation, especially getting students ready to transfer to bigger schools like the University of Betazed, or Harvard on Earth. Sadly, that wasn’t what Latta wanted; it was Starfleet Academy or nothing.

It’s not that Latta lacked for fun or excitement. There are many activities in the colony, sports, arts, hiking, camping, hover bicycles, swimming all kinds of fun. Many of the colonists were farmers or crafts people who enjoyed working with their hands, people who enjoyed a simpler way of life. However, there was a major software industry on Varsa VIII, which focused on defensive weapons, medical research and cybernetics. Not to mention a budding tourist industry. Varsa VIII was blessed with a warm tropical environment similar to the Equatorial regions of Earth. Varsa VII was blessed with warm sunny beaches, lush jungles and warm grassy plains that stretched for kilometers. There were rivers one could go white water rafting. Large secluded lakes that one could go camping next to and reconnect with nature. Latta didn’t exactly envision herself taking reservations from tourists and running tanning lotion poolside to retired couples from Rigel II, or sitting behind a computer terminal all day running code for some new bunion removal tool. Latta wanted more; she grew up hearing stories from her parents about life on Starships, to Latta that was looking towards the future.

Latta was in love with the idea of seeing exciting places like Earth, Andor, Tellar, Centauri VII. Meeting new and exciting races, trying new foods and hearing new music and the excitement of life among the stars. As a young girl Latta and her mother would go to the beach at night, they would spread a blanket on the sand, lay back and look up at the stars; her mother would tell her all the names of the stars, and what races lived there. The idea of meeting new undiscovered races for the first time. Her mother told her stories of life on a Federation Starship, how exciting and interesting it could be. Her mother said Tactical Officers were important if not the most important person on a starship; as they protected everyone on board and giving Latta’s proclivity for protecting and fighting with her sisters and brothers she would be good at it. Latta did protect her younger siblings; somehow, someone found out that Latta’s father was a Romulan defector. Some of the kids would tease her and her brothers and sisters about it. Imagine life in a colony with a huge population of war veterans and a Romulan defector living among them. Contrary to what the Federation says, people are people and some still held prejudice towards Romulans, despite the peace that the Romulan Star Empire and the Federation now enjoy.

Both of Latta’s parents are alive and well living on Varsa VIII, in the colony of New Rome. Survivors of the Cardassian Prison Camps are the ones who settled New Rome. They had grown close during their captivity and felt a special bond towards one another. Majorities of the colonists were primarily survivors of the prison camps from the First Dominion War, but there were also colonists who were just looking for a fresh start. People who had grown disillusioned with life on planets like Vulcan, Andoria, Bajor, Alpha Centari and Earth. People, who liked getting their hands dirty, people who liked to be free of their society’s constraints. Even, people who wanted to disappear and blend in.

Latta’s mother was a Star Fleet Officer; in fact, she was the Chief Engineer on the USS Boston, an Aegian-class frigate. They were protecting a shipment of relief supplies to the Bajorian colonies close to the badlands. The Dominion forces dropped out of warp and took them completely by surprise. The Boston had dropped its shields to beam relief supplies to a Bajoran Freighter. They had been on a mission of mercy. The crew fought valiantly, deck –to-deck and hand – to – hand, but the Jem’Hadar just swarmed them. Normally, the Jem'Hadar didn’t take prisoners, but the Cardassian’s convinced them that having slaves to mine dilithium crystals and other valuable ore for the war effort was necessary. Latta’s mother remembered she and a group of officers were in a firefight, near the warp core. She remembered a bright flash and the next thing she knew was she woke up in a hospital bed in a Cardassian Prison camp on Kilandar III, a Cardassian world rich in dilithium ore.

Because her mother was an Engineer, the Cardassian’s used her in the camp to keep the mining equipment, as well as the camps generators and other important systems running. One day while repairing an EPS Conduit in the infirmary, the Jem’Hadar brought in a group of newly arrived Romulans for treatment. They had minor cuts and bruises, but the Cardassian’s knew that if they didn’t provide at least basic care and treatment of illness, disease and death could overtake everyone in the camp, as the viruses on Kilandar III could be very nasty.

As she was repairing the EPS Conduit when she noticed a very handsome man in the crowd. He wasn’t too tall, but he wasn’t too short either. He had a nice solid build, if not a bit on the stout side. Sable Black hair, bright blue eyes and a smile that could light up a room. Like Anita, he had to be in his mid-twenties. Latta’s mother wasn’t one to believe in love at first sight, as she was a Betazoid and knew that love was a complex emotion that developed over time, but nonetheless she felt something. The man was bleeding rather profusely from above his right eye. Clearly, his eye socket met the butt end of a Jem’Hadar rifle. Anita could sense his strong passionate emotions. Romulans unlike their Vulcan cousins embraced emotions, enjoyed them savored them. Anita could feel hated emanating from this handsome Romulan. Pure animalistic hatred, but it wasn’t clear what his hatred was focused on. Was it the fact that he had been captured, or was it the fact that he was among so many aliens?

As time went by Anita would see this handsome man around the camp. She would smile at him, and on occasion give him a wave. As she was the camp’s Engineer, she was able to move about more freely, she knew many of the other prisoners. She had learned from an Andorian named Lex”re that, the Romulan’s name was S’Javen. One day while in the cafeteria, Anita had been reviewing some system schematics for the main ore-processing unit, when a smoky whiskey voice said, “Hello, may I join you?” Anita suddenly felt her heart starting to race. She was tongue tied, “Well…uhhh...uuhhmmm... duh...duh...of course.” Stammered Anita. The rest they say is history.

It was about three years into their captivity, when Anita had overheard two Cardassian Guards talking about the camp being liberated in a few weeks and how they had to start dismantling the camp. Anita felt a wave of fear over take her. What did dismantle the camp mean, exactly? If the prisoners were to be returned to, their respective governments that meant that she would never see S’Javen again. Oh, it wasn’t as if Anita and S’Javen spent loads of time together, they would steal a few moments here and there. They would eat together, sometimes they would see each other across the compound, each would give the other a little hand wave, but to be careful not to allow the guards to see, if they knew that a fellow prisoner had feelings towards another, it could spell disaster for them both. In a normal relationship people spend time together, they see each other in many different situations, usually the best situations. The question was, could two people in a Prison Camp who may have spent a total of four thousand hours together over the course of three years. A stolen moment here or there, a kiss in the shadows, a moon light stroll to the cafeteria, was it possible to fall in love. Yes, three years seems like a long time and under normal circumstances, it would be.

After, the camp was to be liberated Anita was to be returned to the Federation. However, she and S’Javen had fallen in love. It was possible that two people from two different worlds had fallen in love. Three years of kisses in the shadows, a quick little wave of the hand, a wink of the eye had made their love grow and blossom, some people say that love grows in adversity. Maybe, it was a relationship built on shared misery, but it was so much more. Because Anita could move about the camp more easily than the rest of the prisoners, she could deliver messages and things. As news of the Federation pushing back the Dominion and Cardassian Forces reached the camp via a make shift sub-space receiver. Anita and S’Javen knew that they would be returned to their respective governments, the two lovers knew that they didn’t want to part. Their love grew beyond the two of them. After, weeks of talking and discussing the details, S’Javen decided to defect.

Anita would never forget that day as long as she lived, she had just finished repairing the Main Ore Processing Unit; she was hungry and making her way to the cafeteria. She was passing the barracks near the infirmary, when she had been pulled into the shadows. She was about to scream when a familiar voice spoke, “Don’t scream, I have to talk to you, it’s important.” Said S’Javen. His voice filled with what could only be described as fear. “I love you Anita, I love you very much and I don’t want to leave you.” Said S’Javen, his voice filled with love and hope. Both of them knew that they would be returned to their respective governments, but they both knew that while they had been allies against the Dominion, the fact remained that the Romulans and the Federation still had many unresolved issues. There was mistrust and hostilities on both sides. Especially, with the Romulan Star Empire, there were those in the Romulan Government that felt that the Romulans should be in complete control of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, that the Klingons and the Federation should be subjugated under the rule of Romulus. S’Javen knew that he could never be with his beloved. S’Javen was a cyberneticists but he also had knowledge of many Top Secret Projects and hidden Romulan posts that could pose a huge threat to the Federation.

Anita stood there for a moment, she looked into his eyes, his lovely bright blue eyes and she knew. “You’ll be killed, if they find out.” Said Anita. S’Javen knew she was right, over the last several years, even before the Dominion War there had been many defections. Mostly, low to mid-level ranking government officials who in the grand scheme of things didn’t know all that much about the true nature of the Romulan Military Industrial Complex. It was officers such as S’Javen and others who knew what was really going on that posed the true danger to the Romulans. S’Javen took a deep breath, “I don’t care, I love you and I want to be with you, forever. I want to defect.” Said S’Javen, as he kissed her.

The plan was rather simple, when the camp was on the verge of being liberated. There would be a great deal of confusion and chaos. As luck would have it S’Javen look a lot like Lt. S’Tar who had served with her aboard the Boston. Lt. S’Tar had been killed in a cave in. After, being in a prisoner of war camp for a few years, and a few voice lessons to sound more Vulcan and a more traditional Vulcan haircut, S’Javen took the place of Lt. S’Tar, thus allowing Anita the Betazoid and S’Javen the Romulan to be together.

Growing up in New Rome wasn’t entirely bad, but it wasn’t entirely good either. Life with a Betazoid mother and Romulan father made for an interesting life. Trying to get anything past mom was next to impossible. Not that Latta was a troublemaker, well at least not all the time. She was a bit high-spirited at times and Latta spent more than a few afternoons in the Principles Office. More than once her mother had to come and talk to her Principle or Teacher. Latta was a good student, she scored highest on tests, she was the top in her class, but she was lonely. Most of the other kids made fun of her for being so bright. She ate lunch alone in the cafeteria; no one would play with her after school, except her friend Ketara, a Bolian girl who was just as smart as Latta, but more outgoing. Latta had always lived with the secret that someone would find out that her father was a Romulan. When anyone would ask a personal question about her father she quickly changed the subject, played it up that he was a Vulcan born on some obscure Vulcan colony. It wasn’t that she was ashamed of her father, far from it. Her father is a wonderful man, kind and fun loving, it’s just growing up in a colony with a huge population of veterans, there was still some who didn’t like Romulans. Some of the kids in school would play a game of tag called, Tag the Romulan; it was a game of tag in which you hand to run around with your hands on pressed against your ears and your index fingers sticking up. You ran around and chanted, “I’m a Romulan, I’ll betray you.” It’s understandable considering that there was the old saying, “Never turn your back on a Romulan.”

Latta’s childhood was fun, being the oldest was both a curse and a blessing. As the eldest child, she was expected to set an example for her brothers and sisters. Many times, she had to stay home and baby sit. On the other hand, it meant she could boss them around whenever she wanted. Being the eldest daughter meant that Latta was the apple of her father’s eye. He spoiled her and treated her special.

The two of them would take long walks along the beach, or in the woods. They would talk and share secrets. Her father would tell her all about his family back on Romulus, he would tell her of her Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. Latta often wondered what they looked like, were they nice people, what did they do, what did they like to do for fun? Did they like music, or read poetry? She had a million questions. Latta became so fascinated with all things Romulan. On a certain level, she felt as if part of her family died. Yes, she loved her Betazoid relatives, but when it came to her Romulan side of the family, it was like eating but not tasting. Just because of some line on a map, you couldn’t see, touch, feel or even love one whole side of your family. Latta could understand if they had died in a horrible accident, but it wasn’t the case.

Latta was so fascinated with her father’s heritage that when Latta was fifteen, she had saved her money and went to the red light district of New Rome and got a traditional Romulan Tattoo, even though it was Romulan tradition to commemorate a loved one by skin-painting with paint that faded along with the period of mourning. Latta decided that she wanted to commemorate part of her family that she would never see, but knew was a part of her none –the-less.
