Personal History

Early Life

Giordano was born of Daniel and Rosalia Santiago in the city of Los Angeles on Earth.

Daniel Santiago, born in Los Angeles, lived in a family that valued military service above all else. He was raised by the slogan, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” However, Daniel did not have the same opinions as the rest of his family. So defying his mother and father’s wishes, he became a journalist, working for the Los Angeles Times. Relationships with his parents were strained after that.

Rosalia Santiago was born in Sacramento, Earth, a city a few hundred miles north of Los Angeles. Her family, unlike Daniel’s, was very against fighting, but very supportive of the Star Fleet way of life. Her parents were science officers that served aboard the USS Galileo. Despite her parents’ urgings, Rosalia didn’t want to study science, and instead wanted to write and report on important planet news stories. Daniel and Rosalia met on assignment in Rome, a city in the European Continent on Earth. The rest is history. Giordano was raised and schooled in Los Angeles. He studied music with some of the best artists in the Los Angeles area at the time. He picked up numerous instruments quickly, piano, trombone, and bass, and attended a magnet school for the sciences and arts. As a fortune of circumstance, he also studied physics and computer sciences extensively.

Giordano’s parents were very upset by his decision to join Star Fleet. They had seen so much potential in him in the private sector that they felt that he had thrown his future away. That and he enrolled without his parents knowing. Ever since entering the academy, Giordano and his parents have not had any contact with each other. Although, Giordano does keep in touch with his grandparents on both sides of the family as they were all Star Fleet officers. That is the only connection Giordano still has that links him to family on Earth.

At The Academy

Santiago had an advantage going into the academy. His extensive study of physics and computer sciences at the magnet school he went to gave him an edge in his engineering classes. In addition to that, his athletic stature provided him with a knack for leadership. Majoring in Engineering and minoring in Starship Piloting and Tactics, Giordano graduated at the age of 23 and was commissioned as a Midshipman aboard the USS Philadelphia.

Career Aboard The USS Philadelphia

Santiago's First Mission

During his first mission aboard the Philadelphia, Santiago was tasked with the job of reestablishing control to the SS Windemere, a Federation controlled freighter who, as part of a convoy with the Philadelphia escorting, was on a relief mission. He was successful even while the Chief of Security of the Philadelphia and the Chief Engineer of the SS Windemere were participating in an altercation and his Commanding Officer, Commander Shard Vinzz threatened to fire a volley of torpedoes at the engine room of the Windemere, his location at the time. Following that incident, Santiago was promoted to Ensign and assigned as a team leader for a security sweep of the vessel which led to his success in neutralizing a terrorist group’s communication device that had been planted on the Windemere. During a brief skirmish on their way to their destination, the first officer was KIA, promoting his former DH and Chief Engineer, Commander Imrix Trem to Acting First Officer of the Philadelphia. Santiago received a Gold Star for his actions aboard the Windemere as well as promotion to Lieutenant [Junior Grade]. Commander Vinzz gave Santiago his old Jay-Gee pips, specially made out of gold-pressed latinum and onyx to symbolize his faith in the young officer. Commander Vinzz had taken Santiago under his wing and Santiago hopes to someday be able to do the same with an aspiring young officer when he has the opportunity.

Shore leave

During shore leave, Santiago struck up a friendship with Tek Jansen, a young Tactical Midshipman assigned to the USS Philadelphia. The two developed a casual relationship as co-workers and friends on Andor, however this friendship was cut short when Tek was reassigned to the USS Enterprise before the beginning of the next mission. Commander Vinzz was forced to resign from Star Fleet after his visit back to Andor with the rest of his senior crew for his birthday celebration.

The Philadelphia's Final Voyage

Santiago underwent one more mission aboard the Philadelphia, this time as her Chief Engineer since his former DH was his new Acting Commanding Officer and his promotion was made permanent. However this was short lived as the Philadelphia took heavy damage on her mission and was later decommissioned.

Career Aboard The USS Enterprise

Santiago was transferred to the Enterprise and assigned as her Chief Engineer. Many were surprised at the move made by Star Fleet to assign such a young officer as the Chief Engineer of the (then) First Battle Group Flagship, however, after foiling a terrorist attack and being promoted to Lieutenant, many of the doubters changed their minds about the young officer. His acts of diplomacy with the disgruntled, treasonous officer earned him another Gold Star.

Since then, Santiago has risen in the ranks to reach Lieutenant Commander. During the Second Romulan War, Santiago earned two purple hearts and a Distinguished Service Globe among other awards and medals. During Santiago’s last mission on the Enterprise, the First Officer, Commander Sheppard, sustained injuries that would not allow him to continue his duties. Santiago was called upon to step up as Second Officer to the role of Acting First Officer and at the conclusion of the mission his promotion was made permanent by Admiral Thrawn to become First Officer of the USS Enterprise. He was awarded the Gold Star for performing above and beyond the call of duty during this time period.

Career Aboard The USS Gettysburg

When the Enterprise returned to Starbase Alpha following the conclusion of the Romulan War and the rebuilding efforts at Acamar, she was taken off the active status list of ships for a major refit that was long overdue, even in Santiago’s perspective as former Chief Engineer of the carrier. The Gettysburg, needing a new crew and command staff, received much of the remaining Enterprise crew, the rest transferred to various other ships and positions in the fleet, with Santiago receiving the appointment of First Officer.
