Personal History

San and Shi had a controlled progression through early life as is the case with all Bynar born on Bynaus. For the first year after having been fully gestated in an artificial womb, both San and Shi were individuals among a batch of hundreds of other Bynar newborns being studied in “infancy chambers” for early aptitudes and signs of defects. During this time, they were each exposed to numerous hologram-projected games and simulations meant to challenge their faculties, gauge their responses, and teach them about the world they would be entering. After having collected suitable data, the Bynar central computer selected San and Shi as the most compatible match for one another out of all other infants in the batch. Now designated as “Bynar Pair 100 0111010 0110101 0011”, both infants underwent a compulsory surgical process. This process had been a very long-standing characteristic of the Bynar and involved the removal the parietal lobe from both partners, replacing their parietal lobes with synaptic processors which would allow the two Bynar to integrate with the Bynar central computer, as well as to share their thoughts and function as a pair.

Since the procedure, San and Shi never left each-other's side. The two Bynar did everything together, which mostly consisted of academia, interaction with computer systems, and “100 0100100 1111”: a training activity designed to optimize a pair's efficiency and the closest thing to a sport on Bynaus. SanShi's success in these areas was noteworthy, and as such, the Bynar computer invited them to move up an echelon in Bynar society. SanShi accepted, and soon moved to the “Main District” on Bynaus' southeastern continent to join the more “intellectual pairs”. Equal rights were afforded by the central computer to all pairs on Bynaus, but in order to efficiently operate Bynar society, only a relatively small percentage of Bynar pairs were privileged to study more intellectual pursuits such as philosophy, computer science, and astronautics without having to provide some form of compensation to the central computer. It was during this time that SanShi published a comparative study of Bynar society versus what has been discovered about the nature of the Borg collective. Though a topic that had long been considered by sociologists, SanShi's paper was interesting enough to catch the eye of the Federation's Science Department, having gone into quite some detail about the computational science aspects involved in both societies. The Science Department requested that SanShi be included as one of the Bynar pairs selected to participate in a special team of civilian technologists. The team would be sent for a three-year term aboard the USS Dolomite, a Federation research vessel assigned to test experimental computers. The Bynar central computer confirmed the Federation Science department's request, and, in their seventh year since San and Shi were joined as a pair, they left Bynaus for the first time.

San and Shi, along with another Bynar pair, were assigned to the laboratory of one Dr. Koruba Utamara, a highly respected and accomplished civilian computer engineer from Earth. Upon meeting the two pairs of Bynar, Dr. Utamara asked them to introduce themselves. When his question was answered by a seemingly random string of verbal “ones” and “zeroes” from the four Bynar at once, the elderly doctor shook his head and smiled-- the kindly wrinkles of his cheeks nearly covering his eyes as he did so. “Ichi, Ni, San, Shi” he said, pointing at each of them in turn. Though counting them off as one to four in Japanese, he was in fact, naming them as such to preserve his own sanity. The names stuck, and even in Federation records, the two pairs are known as “IchNi” and “SanShi” for simplicity's sake.

For three years, Dr. Utamara worked with IchiNi and SanShi to develop an early prototype for a warp-core which would be entirely self-managed by its own computer. Though the work received much criticism from Federation engineers who shuddered at the concept of a warp-core with a mind of its own, for its own sake, the research was considered a tiny step forward in Federation computer science. As recognition for their efforts, both IchiNi and SanShi were invited to apply at Starfleet Academy, despite the fact that Bynaus was not yet a full member of the Federation. While IchiNi declined, preferring to return to Bynaus in hopes of becoming one of the few Bynar pairs who held the coveted duty of maintaining the Bynar central computer, SanShi accepted the Federation's offer and enrolled at the Academy as (an) Engineering cadet(s).

The Academy was anything but an easy pass for the Bynar pair. In order to meet with Academy regulations, all cadets were registered as individuals. Strict interpretation of the rules forbade San and Shi from taking examinations together and also forced them to disconnect their link to the Bynar central computer. This was an extremely stressful period for the Bynar. They did not perform well at all academically, unable to function above an elementary school level when separated. Furthermore, extreme stress was taking its toll on SanShi to the point where it was noticed by the Academy's medical officers. Threatened with expulsion due to poor Academic performance, SanShi decided to apply for a medically excused discharge. The medical leave was granted, and SanShi would be permitted to re-apply for a later intake of cadets. For three years, SanShi returned to Bynaus and attempted to train themselves to function as individuals with no real success. Fortunately, SanShi's situation eventually attracted the attention of both the Starfleet Academy Student's Union and the Civic Rights Club who petitioned the powers that be to make special considerations for the Bynar's unique nature and physiology. Spearheaded by Lisa Gardener, an academy cadet majoring in Federation Law, the movement gained enough support to cause an amendment to the Academy Regulations allowing San and Shi to be considered as one cadet. Though still disallowed from accessing the Bynar central computer, SanShi fared much better as a pair. After four years of additional study to major in both Computer Systems Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, SanShi graduated with impressive results 22 years after being brought to life by the Bynar Computer. SanShi remain eternally grateful to Lisa Gardener and the other cadets who petitioned their cause. Now a Midshipman working as a legal clerk at Starfleet Academy, Lisa Gardener hopes to become a JAG officer in the near future, and occasionally checks in on SanShi to see how the Bynar are doing. She is the closest thing to a friend SanShi have.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Computer Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering
Academy Minor(s): Mathematics, Warp Theory, Astrophysics, Cybernetics
Hobbies and Pastimes: Logic puzzles and games (strategema, chess); upgrading the efficiency of various systems and technologies; “100 0100100 1111” (better known as “Practica”); craft racing on the holodeck; general research
Short-Term Goals: to earn the necessary privileges and security clearance to work on Starfleet computer cores; to better understand non-Bynar species; to optimize the efficiency of whichever vessel/starbase they are assigned to; to make a friend.
Long-Term Goals: to improve the rate of efficiency by which San and Shi function as a pair; to design/construct beneficial systems and tools; to favourably represent the Bynar in Starfleet; to explore the galaxy and return to Bynaus with experiences and ideas previously unknown or unconsidered by the Bynar; to theorize and develop new technologies in the fields of computer science and astronautics; to reach the top echelons of Practica.
Personality: Stoic and mechanical; efficiency-oriented, adhering rigidly to schedules and deadlines; curious, yet ignorant about many aspects of social interaction; does not experience moods and emotions in the usual sense, but experiences stresses and inabilities to perform based on circumstances.
Sense of Humor: Undeveloped; more likely to become perplexed by humour than to understand it.
Phobias: being drenched with water; animals.
Likes: Maximizing efficiency; technology; mathematics; physics; logic; interfacing with computers; building and improving upon machines; learning in general; comfortable footwear.
Dislikes: disappointing others; being undervalued or the subject of prejudice; high-frequency sounds which interfere with the Bynar language.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Excessive emotional behaviour from others; inefficiencies; idleness.
Achievements: *possibly* the first Bynar pair to have ever completed Academy training; achieved recognition for their part in developing an early framework for an artificially sentient warp core; received accolades for a published comparative essay on Bynar society versus the Borg collective.
Disappointments: Very poor performance in the first year of Starfleet Academy; requiring an unexpected 11 years before graduating from the Academy.
Illnesses: Rather resistant to disease and infection, no chronic conditions. Both Bynar are prone however to having acute digestive issues.
Strengths: powerful computer-like mind; having two bodies allows for more ability and convenience; Bynar bodies are able to conduct electricity and are resistant to radiation; emotionally detached and therefore able to function well in an emergency; small and agile, can enter small spaces.
Weaknesses: Must stay in close proximity to one another in order to be fully functional; small in stature and lacking in physical strength; relatively inexperienced in matters that cannot be learned academically; environments which are not technological can be harmful to the Bynar over time, (they are so deeply integrated with computers that a prolonged lack of input can psychologically damaging).
Fears: Becoming separated from one another; transporter malfunctions; being overtaken by a foreign computer while attempting to interface with it; losing the ability to function efficiently as a pair.
Prejudices: of the opinion that the majority of alien computer systems are likely to be inferior; the unconfirmed suspicion that most fellow officers are inherently disturbed by SanShi's presence and would rather they not be serving in Starfleet.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Tight-fitting, shiny outfits
Distinguishing Features: 2 Both Bynar have domed heads with mild cranial ridges; tiny devices (data buffers and transponders) attached at the waist and at the base of their skulls; San almost always walks to the right of Shi (and Shi, to the left of San).
Pets: None
Friends: Midshipman Lisa Gardener, (currently filling a support role at Starfleet Academy and formerly chair of the student's union)

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Having to study at Starfleet Academy while separated from one another. It was both a mental and physical strain.
Best Time: Researching aboard the USS Dolomite. SanShi felt they were at their most optimal peak during this time, and were able to perform to the satisfaction of their overseers.
Most Crucial Experience: The three years spent training Practica on Bynaus after being forced to withdraw from the Academy served to better connect San and Shi as a pair. Though it was the opposite effect from what they had hoped, (wanting to succeed as individuals,) they realized that the absolutely needed one another, being that they were of a single mind. Knowing fully that although they possess two bodies, it is the single mind which truly allows them to function, and by looking out for one another, (by inputting meaningful data and recognizing certain “patterns of thought”,) they are able to achieve their optimal level when there is no attempt to separate their mind into two.
Role Model: Dr. Koruba Utamara for having been both a mentally gifted and socially graceful person. Much of their lessons and examples on how to behave appropriately in human society come from Dr. Utamara.
